I used moss from a tree and buttermilk blended together in a blender and painted it onto the pot with a pai t brush. Nature took over and caused it to get mossy.

One thing that we all need to keep in mind: as we are aging our pots, the elements are aging US! I'm glad that Linda promotes wearing hats, using sunscreen, and moving about the garden to take advantage of the shade and avoid working in the sun for extended periods of time!

I love aged looking pots! A few other pot aging tricks that might help people out: Krylon's Ultra-Flat Camoflauge Spray Paint is even more matte than Fusion Matte and comes in good outdoors-y colors. Mr. Clean Erasers are good for removing some paint if you've accidentally put on more paint than you wanted. A fat rounded chalk paint brush works great for dry brushing on pots. General Finishes Milk Paints are another paint that holds up really nicely outdoors with no topcoat needed. This was a fun project to watch! Thanks, Linda!

Besides buttermilk and mossy dirt mixture, I was told to use also use yogurt painted onto the pots and to let them just age in place. This mixture helps with green moss growth on pots.

Thanks so much! ❤️ You have given me permission to be messy and play with muck. So fun!! And the result is beautiful. I’ve used off white lime wash on terracotta pots. I wipe it on with an old towel and wipe off the excess leaving it in the crevices and edges. It stays on because it soaks into the porous terra cotta. Certainly will try your ideas as well.

I think the aged pots look great in the garden of an older, traditional home. Our house is mid-century modern, so I lean towards the cleaner look, although in our typically damp environment, nothing really stays pristine for long. If I had to come up with a term for the look of most of my pots, I'd say "weathered." Out of curiosity, do the "faux aged" pots eventually age naturally on top of the muck? Do they go from "aged" to "ancient"?
