I'm a plus 2 handicap, age 60, been playing for 35 years. I learned from a teaching pro back in 1988 to set up my irons EXACTLY as being taught here. I also place my feet together and step out EXACTLY as shown in this video. Tiger does this as well. I can also cut my ball by slightly closing or opening my club face without moving my feet using this setup. Picking a target spot in front of your ball may work for most but I bet you have a double digit handicap. Many important things involved so I'm not saying these setup is a Johnny Fix All but it should help. The way you grip your club, takeaway and tempo of your swing is very important obviously, but this setup will help you hit straighter shots. The only time I use a target in front of my ball is when I'm putting. I find three spots between my ball and the hole. The midpoint is where I want the ball to cross and the first and last set the speed for the putt. Best of luck guys, it's a great game and if you're breaking 80 you're in the top 5 percent!

After lots of PT, stretching, and exercise, I’m so grateful to be able to play again casually and score almost as well as I used to. Never knew breaking 80 was top 5%, definitely feels like even more of an achievement after everything that’s transpired. Hope I can continue to play this beautiful game throughout my life and maintain a solid handicap into my 60s as well. Happy for you

I think one of the most important steps to aiming properly is to pick an intermediate target, a spot on the ground, maybe a foot or two in front of the ball, that is in line with your target. It's much easier to align the clubface square to a target that's 1-2 feet in front of the ball than it is to align it to a target that's 170 yards away. I do this on every shot with every club in the bag from driver to putter.

For aiming, I was taught as you demonstrated turning my head while in position over the ball. However, I was also shown to stand behind the ball first in a straight line through the ball, to the hole and pick out a spot to aim at several feet ahead of the ball on that line. That way you can aim at something say 10 feet away, instead of 150 yards away. This method greatly improved my aim. To be honest, I thought I learned that from you?

Pretty helpful. I was often pulling my irons cuz the topline was subconsciously influencing my aim. This was a bigger problem with offset irons like the Ping Eye 2's I used to play years ago and I tried to combat it by switching to less offset irons. But the simple act of lining up the toeline perpendicular to the ground has the clubhead looking much better at address and giving me great directional control. It's counterintuitive that putting feet together would help alignment, but it does. I am integrating that with the point along target line a few feet in front I have always used.

Way too much thinking.... Sure get your alignment but frankly good ball strikers make subtle adjustments based on wrist / impact shot shaping. Intermediate alignment target helps but most of all in my experience set up behind the ball, check your target, address and take a few peeks to where you want to land the ball, adjust feet alignment if need be based on your "feel" of the shot and execute using muscle memory. This is too difficult to explain in words. Sorry... Too much thinking will destroy you !!

And he’ll point out hey, you’re lined up at that tree over. Hey, you lined up at that water over there. And I’m like wtf you talking about? Bc I’m looking over my shoulder and it looks lined up? Well, I was wrong. I had another buddy who saw me at the range and broke it down a lot for me. You looking over your shoulder to make you’re lined up isn’t good. He had me stand behind him to show me how I was aimed, and I was surprised when I was off. But just like a lot of people here saying, I’ve learned to line up, and use something immediately in front of my ball to line up with and square my club face up to it.

After setting up as suggested a good way to double check alignment is to take a slow practice swing and hold the club out in the finish extension, the point in the swing where the club force pulls the trail arm straight and horizontal and the face has turned over with the toe pointing up. Where the arm and shaft are pointing relative to the intended target will predict the the direction the ball will fly off the face if the same biomechanics are used at impact. A significant difference between the swings of pros and recreational golfers affecting the ability to hit to a specific target is an action called side bend. Turning the downswing the spine bends towards the trail foot which causes a reactionary lateral shift of the hips to target and allows the trail arm to swing and straighten down the target line, which is necessary to allow the club force time to pull the trail arm straight. Absent any side bend action in the spine the swing is more of a purely rotational motion which will cause the club head to whip around to the left rather than out towards the target resulting in the trail arm being bent at the elbow instead of being pulled straight towards the target. If a golfer has the swing fault of not allowing the club force to pull the arm consistently straight in every shot - partial and full - it introduces a huge amount of shot-to-shot and club-to-club variability to the swing which will affect accuracy even with the consistent address procedure demonstrated here.

@ra1der53 жыл бұрын
This is all good info. Absolutely correct. But it is missing one very important key element that I learned from my pro decades ago and I don’t understand why today’s pros aren’t emphasizing this. Watch a PGA tournament. Before every shot, every pro is standing behind the ball. Sometimes, they are raising their club with the shaft in front of their face. WHY? They are creating an imaginary line from the target to the ball. THAT is the target line this guy mentions, but he never tells you how it’s created. BUT WAIT! YOU’RE NOT DONE! While still standing behind the ball ,identify a small item directly in front of the ball AND ON THE TARGET LINE… the tip of a leaf, a noticeable blade of grass, a dry spot, anything to use as a point of reference. Be precise! Keep your eye on your reference point, don’t look away, and approach the ball using that imaginary line between your reference point and the ball. THEN follow this guy’s instructions, but keep using that reference point to help you get your club face perpendicular and your feet, hips, and shoulders parallel to the target line. This is very important! If your club face and body are off line just a little at address, your shot will be off 10-30 yards at the other end. 1/2” can be the difference. Be precise. Build that foundation of straight lines before approaching the ball.

I keep the club head steady and on the ground and then move 90 degrees around so I'm parallel to the target line. I then place my trail hand on the club and take some practice swings to make sure I'm brushing the grass in front of the ball position. I then step in and hit the shot.

I stand behind the ball facing the green. I pick a visual cue about one foot in front of the ball (clump of grass, etc) in line with the green. Set up to the ball and square the face to that visual cue. Then swing and hit a tree or straight in the water.

In combining this with the Vertical Line Swing, when you close your stance should your hips and shoulders also be closed? I assume that the clubface is still square to the target in any case, right? Thanks

The standing up makes sense. I have it happen or seems to happen once in a while I am driving the ball. I found that I seem to sneak closer I think. What happens is I feel it after I hit the ball and even if I hit it good I know where it is going, down the right edge and then with a slice. It seems that I do not get the club face square when I stand up and when I do it I know where it is going as I can feel the club face is open. All I do is make sure I am far enough away from the ball until the next time.

Todd, I am breaking my wrists at the time I am striking the ball. This is costing me distance. How can I stop doing that ? What exercises should I be doing ? How can I also add more dynamic loft to my irons
@danburch99893 жыл бұрын
Skill comes into play be selecting the correct club, proper swing, proper alignment. Once you strike the ball, all that goes out the window and luck takes over. A tuft of grass, divot, anything that the ball hits as it bounces or rolls makes the difference between an ace or a bogey or worse.

Stand behind ball. Draw your imaginary line from your ball to the pin. Now pick a scuff, a yellow blade of grass something between the ball and green about 2’ in front of the ball now line up with the 2’ target and go!!!much easier to line up with a target 2’ in front of you!!!

Clubface pointing at target at address means it will be closed when the ball separates from the face. Left! Nicklaus had a slightly open face at address so the face would be square at impact.

I have an older set of "BLACK CAT" irons by LYNX. The plastic inserts on the back of the iron heads are beginning to break apart. A local pro told me the plastic inserts were for muffling the sound when striking the ball and have no effect on the ball what so ever. Is this true or should I shop for a newer set of irons?
@USGOLFTVshow3 жыл бұрын
We had a set of those irons...legendary! It may be time for an upgrade. The new technology is solid and will benefit your game. Make sure you get a proper fitting so the clubs are built for your body and swing style. 👊

On the Tee i find a marker in the grass two feet in front of where I am going to place my tee and line up square and parallel to that, in the fairway or rough I stand behind my ball relative to the target and find something that is visible 2 to 3 feet ahead of my ball and then line up using that

I like to stand behind the ball and pick out a target about 10 ft in front of the ball that is in line with the target so that when you get over the ball you can aim the club head at the target just in front of you rather than the one further away. I would guess that Todd's head rotation can also be used in combination with this.

I hold the club up and make sure the grooves are perpendicular. There's a little roll (bulge?) to the leading edge of my clubs. I'm holding it at my target then step over and draw an imaginary line parallel to the target for my feet. I try to trust that and forget about it, otherwise I have a tendency to turn to the right a little.
@legend90183 жыл бұрын
Good video, as others have commented though you definitely need a reference point in your peripheral vision that you select from behind the ball. Most golfers though do not use the leading edge to aim so that is a good point. Often times they use the topline of the club which isn’t entirely accurate. The process you promote is good though as a preshot routine. I’ve played with plenty of golfers that have very good swings but are just aimed poorly. Inevitably they begin tinkering with their swing and that leads to disaster. A gun will shoot only where you aim it. Some comments have said this assumes you have a good swing and strike and that is true however, when you do actually deliver the club properly it’s good to have this variable covered correctly.

Maybe my eyes are broken but at 1:47 the iron doesnt look square to me but closed a couple of degrees. Also he stresses feet alignment being square to the ball with the rhymer alignment tool but when he addresses the ball at 4:41, his stance is slightly closed and not square. Again it could be the camera angle or my computer screen but......in theory it makes sense and I do some of the things he is teaching, but I do prefer picking a spot out in front of my ball to aid in alignment. I think of it as a very long putt. haha
@USGOLFTVshow8 ай бұрын
