I just came in from my shop working on the drive lines for my travelall, and to my delight a bare knuckle binder video about drive lines. Life is good.

Great practical problem solving. I imagine a dedicated driveshaft shop could get that final 3% of perfect balance to remove any vibration, but let's be honest. We're not talking about a racecar here. Getting an old truck up to freeway speeds is going to induce an awful lot more vibration than a tiny variance in the original shaft's balance in comparison. A pleasure to watch as always!

I like it! What I have done in the past is, after the first couple of spot welds, install the driveline. Then, with the tires off the ground, vice grip a piece of coat hanger to the frame rail and have it point right at the area to weld. Start the truck in low gear and use the coat hanger as a hillbilly run-out gauge. You can tap the driveline with a mallet and/or focus the weld on whatever area you need to make the driveline straight. Keep the videos coming!

Nice Job!!! The other factor to consider is Critical Speed. It's a combination of driveshaft length, diameter, material, and RPM. You can't exceed the Critical Speed of the driveshaft, it could bend or whip. These older trucks typically have higher ratio axles, and to get to modern highway speeds may mean an overdrive, which you better check the critical speed of your driveshaft before you install an overdrive or higher RPM engine, you may induce another problem. I don't think you will have that issue, just adding information. Keep up the great content!

Common sense principles applied with precision, a perfect recipe for a quality result! Thank you for the info, I have always reset an end when shortening shafts, with kind of ok results, but your way is definitely better, I'll be using it from now on. Yes, kringle is really good! The "Countryside Lefse" they make in Blair, Wi is super good too. The wife and I both have (some) Norwegian blood but we diverge on the lutefisk, I love it and always freeze some for a treat the following summer too, she flat out won't touch it...

Great tutorial! The church I grew up going to as a kid had a lutifisk feed once a year and our Wednesday youth groups had to help with the dinner. You could wash your clothes 10 times and still not get that smell out of your clothes 😂

May I ask why you did not cut it at the ends?
@BareKnuckleBinder3 күн бұрын
@@johnnyholland8765 yep, it’s a good question. I cut it towards the center because it’s easier to keep straight. Using the angle iron, you need straight tube on both sides of the union for it to clamp to. Cutting the ends would be great if you had a lathe or a driveshaft jig to measure/prevent runout of the end caps- but I don’t… yet?

I really hope you have that welder cranked up, otherwise you aren’t getting a lot of penetration on a flat bead like that with mig. Would be much better doing a bevel on each end of the tube about half the thickness. You’re much likelier to get good penetration that way.

Center cut drivelines make me cringe. I heard story of a guy who did just that. It broke and catapulted his car into on coming traffic! Died on impact, ripped the rear end clean out from under him! Was said he did it many years prior and the fatigue broke it at the weld. Could of been bad welds or the out of balance/vibration that got to it. The driveline is hanging in an old driveline shop to remind people of what not to do. She's turning several thousand rpms so it happens in an instant no warning.
