I'm Chinese (even though my name says otherwise). But it's amazing to see how different cultures understand the independent relationships we all face as immigrant cultures. We might be of different cultures, but we really are all the same. We can all be American even though we all look different. And we are all people, we are all part of the same world. Thank you Jimmy for that, we are all just American.

If you don’t pay too much attention he sounds very American, but if you listen closely you can still hear little nuances of a different accent. So I would say it’s very hard to completely loose your accent because you will likely have a little remnants from a native accent.
@glumraidh Жыл бұрын
Why should immigrants completely get rid of their accents? Accents are part of our identities; everyone has an accent. As long as it's not too difficult to understand, it's acceptable.

@glumraidh Жыл бұрын
Agree! For Jimmy (and anyone who wants to break into Hollywood), accent reduction is essential because it'll open up doors to a variety of characters instead of merely being typecast. However, for others, having an American accent is totally unnecessary; as long as people understand you, you should be proud of your own accent because it represents your identity. We should embrace our cultural identity rather than try to get it of it.

I think in terms of accents, it's a matter of familiarity. I'm not Russian so I can't tell the difference between your accent and standard American accent, but of course you know your own accent. But I come from the similar place as Jimmy and know both of his parents are Shanghainese, so I can detect the slight Shanghainese tone in Jimmy's accent, which I think you probably wouldn't be able to tell. Anyway, I don't think anyone should *get rid of* their accent, world would be so dull if everyone only speaks in an American or British accent

I think it's great to see more Asians in entertainment (coming from a culture where "entertainment" isn't even on the list of career choices...never will be...so the choice of Asian actors to choose from will be so minute). And the route Jimmy took to find his way and that is to capitalize on being an immigrant. How he IS helping break the stereotype of an immigrant. So, that people don't continue to see immigrants in one way (even if many immigrants choose not to change things by staying in their shells/communities). And not trying to fit in. Be "Americanized". As for his career so far...I'd hope he will find non-immigrant type roles FAST...so he doesn't get type-cast. So many actors find their fame playing this one role on a certain sitcom or movie. And find it hard to near impossible to break away from that one character. Which would happen more when Hollywood is willing to bank on Asian actors. We're still no where close to being there yet. The male lead in Crazy Rich Chinese isn't even 100% Chinese. In a "Chinese film ABOUT Chinese". :)
@riverday91312 жыл бұрын
One minor correction: we do have people, young people, here who choose to do entertainment as a career, e.g. something similar to standup comedy. And some of them do get big fat check for it.

It's a pity you state it as 'to get rid of' as if any other accent than a standard English variety is considered unintellectual. I know society regards a different accent to a lower educated/proficient English level, that's unfortunately how things go, especially in my country, The Netherlands.
@metaleirosincero63176 жыл бұрын
Bas J. Having a neutral accent as her means proficiency, therefore it sounds better than a native speaker. But I don’t get it what’s the problem in having accent, you look so contradictory.
@BJKD246 жыл бұрын
Metaleiro Sincero Yes, in terms of pronunciation it does contain more clarity. And I said it is considered less intelligent in overall society, I agree with you on that matter
@dxcSOUL6 жыл бұрын
The same thing goes for anyone with more than one language. Go to Japan, and obviously you would try to speak more clearly, meaning you would want your pronunciation to mimic the native accent... The same thing applies to English. Just because it is the lengua franca doesn't take away from the practicality of clarity....
@bminor80926 жыл бұрын
For many, hearing someone try to speak more 'natively' is an indication of how hard they have worked to assimilate. People appreciate the effort, and may consider a strong accent to be a sign of laziness. Also, many that have not studied the new language will sound like they are using third-grade wording, so if you heard that from a native speaker that was 30 years old, you would judge them as below average intellect or poorly educated.
@azimovartik59846 жыл бұрын

Sorry, Jimmy, if I heard you on the phone without ever seeing you, I'd still pick you out as Asian --- even if I got "which" Asian wrong, you still sound ASIAN --- but since I've listened to so many Chinese, I would probably get "which" Asian correctly. I've been around Asians most of my life --- which is a good thing.
