At what age do you start feeding calves hay and is it legumes or grass hay?
@dairynetworks Жыл бұрын
3 days old. Water, Hay and calf pelletes just a fistful. They start nibbling on it and you add as they continue to increase the amount they feed on

@@dairynetworks Isn't too early taking into consideration that the rumen is not developed yet and there isn't enough micro organisms to digest hay especially the high fibre one ? Some people would delay access to good quality hay until the 8th week and others after weaning. From your experience which is better?
@dairynetworks Жыл бұрын
@@rodi482 Science has so many school of thoughts regarding when to introduce solid food but maintains rumen must be develoved before weaning. Solid feeds triggers the development of rumen and fibre is important in strengthening rumen epithelium. 3 days has worked well for us and hundrends of our clients. In Europe hay is introduced late but remember their concentrates is rich in highly digestible fibre unlike whats available in our Kenyan market. Thats where SCIENCE meets ART thus copy - pasting system without getting spirit/due deligence sometimes leads one into huge losses
