I gotta say, I really appreciate the one-on-one vibe your videos have. No big cinematic intros, no scary-happy voice, just straight-up information and how to apply it. Thanks!

I graduated in 1985, and worked staff to administrative positions over the 20 yrs I worked (had my license for 35 years; body broke in 2005, so have been on disability- and the patient end of things for 20 yrs). One of the things I told new grads (as a charge or admin nurse) was that if they didn't ask questions, I'd be on them like white on rice, because nursing school basically teaches how not to kill someone... the rest is experience, and that takes a lot of time. I worked in TX where RNs were seen as unapproachable in rural areas. The hierarchy was disgusting (though worked at my favorite jobs there for 17 yrs prior to moving back to my hometown in the Midwest, where RNs were bumping into themselves). In my day, there were no rapid response teams, no gloves everywhere, or even another nurse on the floor that could be found (I had 14 acute care neuro/neurosurgery patients on nights in 1986). No computers, no internet, etc. We didn't even have O2 sat monitors- aside from getting ABGs, it was all about nail beds, lips, and skin temp. We didn't have hospitalists in hospitals for the first 17 yrs I was a RN. It was terrifying, and asking questions was met with disdain-and that was SO wrong. It's SO important for the old school folks realize that things are different now, and "internships" (that didn't exist in the time I was in nursing) are part of education that schools have cut out because of liability issues. When I was being treated for leukemia I was stunned that the student nurse was only allowed to bring in my lunch tray. That was it. She was only able to follow the staff nurse around. It was sad. I loved newbies when I was working. I never had a clinical situation panel until I left Texas- and thought it was odd- but I didn't know what nursing schools had cut out... so much more theory was included, and "critical thinking" (which can only be developed with experience and application). Also- get any puker on their side before leaving the room, or hit the call light for help while staying with the patient if they might get themselves back to their back if they're confused. :)

Hi, thank you for your kind words!:) The website doesn't let me change my schedule week to week, and I've been doing a lot of overtime on my unit, so I took it down. I'm totally open to trying to schedule something with you though. You can email me at newgradnursinginterviewcoach@gmail.com and we can try to fit something in before your interview?

No new grad is ready for anything serious, hence why nurse residencies are so important and beneficial. With so much more expected of RNs in today's healthcare system, combined with the lack of clinical time and skills learned while in school - I feel residencies are the only safe way to train a new grad. Unfortunately, these residencies are not enforced, and we're still expecting new grads to handle complexities that they are nowhere near ready for too soon. This starts with the nurse managers who are the most valuable in determining new nurse's needs and lobbying in favor of these programs to the hospital administration, state nursing boards, and to the national legislature also. I feel these programs should be a requirement, not a luxury. We wouldn't see the turnover and errors if such in-depth training was mandatory, and hospitals would save money in those two areas. This should be common sense. We wouldn't want to be cared for by a newly graduated and licensed MD who didn’t yet complete a residency. Nursing wants to be taken seriously yet practices and policies are archaic and dangerous.
