Sure. It wins the dumbest question ever. This question is probably the absolute worst job interview question an employer can ask.
I have more than a decade's worth of statistical and predictive models that confirm your cultural fit, achievements, capabilities, skillsets, and strengths are what matters. (See my gold-award-winning book The Hiring Prophecies: Psychology behind Recruiting Successful Employees.)
Do Not as in never…
I can't control what the employers ask you. You can't control them either. But, I can help you prepare the best answers to this ludicrous question and you can control your response.
Do not-I repeat-DO NOT under any circumstance actually provide them a with a weakness. Never cite something you’re actually bad at. As in N-E-V-E-R.
If they're going to ask you this silly question, you don't need to justify it with an actual weakness.
Do not, and this might be contrary to what you’ve heard from other so-called experts, trainers, columnists or whoever, never provide them with a “strength!”
It's insulting enough they've asked you this question. Don’t compound the problem by insulting them back with, oh I don’t know, something like you’re too detail-oriented, too conscientious, work too much, work too hard, or do everything yourself because you don't know how to delegate.
How idiotic do you think these people are? Oh. Wait. They asked this question in the first place. Well, be above that.
Do not use negative words such as “I’m bad at this” or “I’m not good at that” and so on.
Do this instead…
The best way to handle this question, so that you're actually answering it and they view you as giving it the college try, is to cite something you’ve yet to have the opportunity to do.
Say something such as, “One of my areas for improvement is [insert whatever here]. I’ve yet to have the opportunity to perform this function, work in this industry, study these things., etc.”
They likely won’t penalize you for not having this experience, especially if it’s not germane to the job function.
Then make sure to…
At the end of your statement, make sure to add what you’ve done and are doing to gain experience in that area.
"…Even though I don’t have practical experience in that area, I’ve read [these] books, watched [these] videos, taken [these] training classes, and so on.”

After I bought proper boots, nomex pants & shirt that was my work clothes budget for a while. Last time I was asked that question, this is what I said to them: " I am a Berkeley MBA grad. We have practiced answering this question a zillion times as I was getting ready to come into the job market; what you will hear from me is that I will give you a very fluffy weakness, but then I will also tell you how hard I am working on improving that weakness, which will say nothing about my real weaknesses -because we all as human beings have them - and will tell you nothing about the kind of value I bring to your organization, so if you still like me to answer the question, I am happy to do it, but there may be better ways of assessing my fit." By the way, I got hired very quickly.....

I have found it effective to show how relative this question is e.g..a drill sergeant shouts at work (strength), yet does he do that at home with his wife (weakness)....so a strength may be a weakness in one scenario, a strength in another. Instead I ask them that if they catch me trending a weakness that they highlight it to me and then work with me on overcoming it by turning it into a strength through mentoring/training/etc. Yet if they see a particular strength they like they highlight it and see if they can use it more effectively to reach the business objectives set e.g. good leadership or sales skills, etc. Works every time! (Maybe because it's a curve ball back to them). I never mention any weakness/strength period...lol

This was great input. I've been tracking my brain to come up with a "weakness" that isn't critical to the role I'm interviewing for, and is something I can spin positively and show evidence of improvement on. " After a few seconds of silence, the interviewers laughed, said I was right, and I got the job. That was after the head of HR asked me about what my plans are, if I want to get married, my answer was : " My grandmother keeps asking me this question."

I think there's a life lesson here. I think they ask such questions to check the applicant's self-esteem health. Some applicants quickly submit and self-deprecate while others, narcissists, will say that they're perfect. Both types engage in egotistical behavior, public self-praisal or self-criticism, instead of just existing, learning and improving, and being aware of the strengths and weaknesses. It's a sad truth that these judgement-inducing questions are necessary because they reveal issues with character. It's good to know how to evade this question. Great video. Thank you.

At a state financed job search training three years ago, I've got literally a bookletful of typical job interview questions. Among them, this "greatest weakness" question was shaped like "What is the thing which people misunderstand about you the most?". I've never been asked this, but I'd be curious how to handle this very shaping of the question, because anyone could ask it like this.

I love this question! In this instance, you tend to assume it's a negative. Never answer in the negative! Highlight a positive trait, but one that they haven’t experienced yet.

I used to answer this by selecting a skill listed towards the bottom (obviously not the top) of the person specification or better still, a skill not listed at all but on the periphery of the role, and saying I don't have much experience of that yet, but that's something I want to improve on and this role might enable me to do that.

I follow rules in the spirit they were intended, unless they are observed to be illogical actions in the work flow with no substantial answer as to why it's done." *Him:* "I still don't understand how that's a weakness. That's... literally what you said for your strengths category." *Me:* "Alright, let me put it this way. My job is to do my best, not mindlessly do as I'm told. If what you tell me is the most superior methodology to the work flow, or you are willing to listen to your employees and make adjustments, my biggest weakness won't be a problem." *Him:* "Wow, you kind of sound like you want to be management material if what you're saying is true." *Me:* "That's precisely why I was forced to leave my previous location of employment. I'm going to do what the company needs, and if my superiors tell me to do something on the contrary, I won't do it. I'd rather be fired doing the best I can, than preserve my job while knowingly hurting the company by following orders and not asking deep questions. My work ethic is extreme, sir... it makes me enemies of the lazy and stupid, and I'll do everything in my power to get the lazy and stupid fired, even if they're management, and I have done this in previous locations I've worked at." - That's worked for me at the jobs I've done in the past. Unfortunately, supervisors don't quite realize that I'm not just talking about integrity until 3-5 months in. Then they begin to realize entire policies and methods are changed, schedules are shifted, instructions and training changes, and there's magically more money available to hire more people. But at the same time a lot of management and several co-workers hate my guts.

What would be the best thing to do if I got asked/stuck on a question I've never heard of/prepared for? For example: "Tell me about a time when you had conflict with a coworker and how did you resolve it?" Let's assume that it was a very rare question that I never heard of/experienced before, i.e. my team never had conflicts (even though it's rather a common one). How should I go about answering it if I have no predetermined scenario that I can relate to on the spot? - Should I just take a moment and collect myself even if it's awkward silence? - Should I just make something up or should I just tell them straight that I have never dealt with something like that before? - Or do something else completely different that I might not have mentioned above?

I live in Korea, and I'm bi-lingual. My potential employer is interviewing me for a position for which I do not have any experience in (change management). However, I have a lot of experience (with a great track record) in Project Management and service delivery. Would it be okay to state the obvious and say that I may be lacking in "change management" experience, perse, so I've been reading up a lot on this particular area? Or would it be better to choose something totally irrelevant from the role for which I'm interviewing for?

Like for me I hate to organize events (ordering food, flowers, decor, etc.) I am terrible at it. The other one for me is public speaking (standing in front of a podium in front of a room full of people) not good at it don't want to do it. And, honestly if either of these two things are part of the job, I don't want the job, because no one would be happy about it.

I've watched a handful of your videos now as I'm prepping for a job application and generally found your videos helpful, but I really disagree with this one. I don't think it's unfair to be asked about a weakness in an interview, we're all human with our own strengths and weaknesses. Knowing you're not that good at something and admitting that isn't a bad thing where I'm from, but maybe it's a cultural difference. I have an answer I've prepared for this question, it's a real weakness I have and it's not something I've actively failed at, but I struggle with strong foreign accents. Where other people seem to understand the point of a sentence without getting every word, my tolerance for that is a lot lower. What ends up happening isn't that I'm a poor communicator, but that I end up asking more questions and clarifications than most people to make sure I didn't misunderstand.

One of my weaknesses is that i'm quite stoic in proving people, particularly those who underestimate me, wrong which is a weakness very derivative from my teachers hindering my progression to reach my goals in life i.e. preventing me from being able to progress into Further and Higher education due to their "opinion" that I wasn't intelligent enough to cope, despite achieving the require grades to progress. this weakness has often at times lead me to exhaust myself in spending time and resources, exerting myself to prove these people wrong. Although, this weakness has resulted with helping to develop one of my greatest strengths, Determination, which ended up with myself graduating in the top 6 students in sixth form (the stage my teachers tried to prevent me from progressing into) and graduating university first of my class with a First Class Honours Degree. How would you interpret an answer like that?

Is it OK to say, "I really like to impress people and have them be happy with my work, so you might think I'd be really good at picking up hints, but I'm not. I really need my supervisors to be clear and direct with their expectations, and not make me guess what they want from me. (I've thought about this for a long time, and its true for me and I feel like its a way to answer this question while sort of in a sideways way telling them what I need from them. Because this HAS been an issue with some jobs for me. And also, if this eliminates me then it probably really isn't a great fit because I want to be successful but i do have a blind spot in this area. However, I am interested in your opinion if this is good or bad in some way I haven't considered.)

An alternate answer I have thought of is that I feel like my education could be stronger because o have an associates degree, but would like to bump it up to a bachelors. Or that I really want to learn a second language, as I have some really basic familiarity with French and Spanish but have not yet brought either of them up to a conversational level.

No. It makes you sound very high maintenance. You're telling your boss they are going to have to be VERY clear and direct with you all the time...because you're terrible at picking up hints. And this means many mistakes will occur (because they are not perfect, and can't always do what you define as "direct and clear" all the time). You are already making excuses for future mistakes...and will be blaming them for them. Why not just do what Andy said?

I ask this question to see if the candidate is self-aware and if they can give a solid outline on how they're working to improve it, that shows problem solving and committment to self-development. Of course they can lie, but they can lie about other things on the interview too..

My answer typically goes like this: Well we all have weaknesses and I am no exception. Looking back, I realize I trust people easily and it takes my nerves. I get annoyed with people who do not keep their appointments and who do not take their professional & personal life seriously. I get really annoyed when one fine morning I get a call from my boys that he is not coming to office especially when u have given an important task to be accomplished that day being a part of inputs for your Operations Review Meeting for the day. I hence have to buy some time from my higher ups to be ready with the required data doing all by myself for the meeting. This really puts me and my boss in an awkward situation before my board. But now I always have a back up plan.

I would never in life give this answer. I would stay far away from the word "annoyed" as well. How someone takes their professional and personal life shouldn't concern you. I would focus this answer on my own weakness. This answer makes it appear that you have a short fuse.

Now I only concentrate on cultivating the things that I'm good at, so I can be even better. Thoughts about my answer?
