Such a helpful, well explained tutorial for paintingnwith metallic paint. I had a 'pro' do a bedroom a few years ago and wished he had seen this video first. I'm in a different place and want to do again and will be providing this video to my new professional painter.

So we need to prep our wall from any holes and then apply a primer, and a base coat of a color similar to the metallic we are painting with?
@Deandun1013 жыл бұрын
That is correct. It is the most economical way to do it.

For give me I’m new at all this . I am almost ready to paint my ceiling with Modern Masters Metallic satin finish paint in Gold Rush . I also got the extender they sell to add to the paint . My questions are.. What kind of paint did you use as a base coat , a regular latex paint? I’m hoping to be able to get something at a big box store since I’m short on time and don’t want to have to order it. Oh I also put two coats ofZinsser Gardz. After watching both your videos I have decided it would be a good idea for me to use the weve patter since the ceiling is about 20’ x 35’ . And the fact I’ve never done anything like this before. And other advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so very much .
@Deandun1014 жыл бұрын
Hello Michele. The "Roller Weave" technique is a good strategy for applying metallic paint to a ceiling. Any good quality latex paint will work fine as a base coat. Zinsser Gardz is a good product for sealing an absorbent surface. Add the "Extender" to the metallic paint only in the final "Weaving" coat. I used the Sheer Glazing Medium by Golden Paintworks as an extender.

I really want to turn my bedroom into gold with glitter. Should I use that gold paint.first and then use a clear top coat ?
@GoldenPaints Жыл бұрын
Hi, Shelby. Our Gold Metallic paint is made with mica platelets that reflect the light, so while the walls would be metallic, they won’t be as shiny as gold glitter. You could certainly use the Gold Metallic paint and then apply a gold glitter over it if you wanted more of a glitter look. We’d recommend starting with a complimentary colored house paint as a base coat, then the Gold Metallic paint, two coats, and then the addition of the glitter if you wanted more sparkle. A clear topcoat is not necessarily needed since a bedroom isn’t typically considered a high traffic area.

If you want a smooth surface and an even coat. Let me save everyone hours of frustration and numerous trips back to the paint store for that 6th gallon of paint. Tape and plastic your entire room. Spray it on.
@Deandun1013 жыл бұрын
I agree that spraying is the best way to apply metallic paint. However, working an HVLP or an airless sprayer with metallic paint requires knowledge and a skillset that is not common and can be quite dangerous for amateurs. I'm sure you've been called in to "fix" such jobs as I have. Peace.

Did the paint dry smooth if not how do you achieve a smooth finish im doing a featured wall and they want it smooth
@GoldenPaints Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question. The smoothness of the finish is dictated by the method of application and the smoothness of the surface the paint is applied to. Achieving a “glass-like” smoothness is not really possible on a wall. Spraying the paint can produce the best results, but requires spraying expertise. We always suggest testing your application on a sacrificial piece before starting in on a wall. What if you have to paint over heavy texture and another color of metalic? Also what prep work needed to walls
@Deandun1014 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephanie. The metallic paint will highlight any imperfections on the wall that stand out. If the heavy texture is evenly distributed, it will look fine but the texture will be noticeable. This is a good paint and will be fine over another metallic paint.
@colebphotography2295 Жыл бұрын
If way to much paint is added in some areas but not others to the point that there are tons of lines and texture areas. Is there anything that can be done to save it? I had a friend “help” me and he totally messed it up. I don’t know if it can be saved. 🥺
@GoldenPaints Жыл бұрын
Hi there, as you know the metallic colors are made with mica platelets that need to be aligned in one direction to get a uniform finish. As you’re probably seeing on your wall, due to the shine of metallic colors, irregularities in the thickness and direction of how the paint is applied are highlighted by the light. I’m afraid the best thing at this point would be to start over. That means getting the wall back to one uniform smooth surface, which will likely require sanding down the areas where they is too much paint, then priming the whole wall to even out the finish, followed by a basecoat tinted to compliment your metallic color, and then finish with two coats of the metallic color. I know that sounds like a lot of work, but it will be amazing when you finish!

What is the difference between a 1/4" and 1/2" nap roller?
@GoldenPaints5 ай бұрын
The nap size of a roller has to do with the length of the fibers themselves on the roller cover. A smaller size like ¼ will be best for smoother surfaces, where a ½ will have a bit more roller texture, which may be great on a textured surface that will accept the extra paint that is offloaded.
@janl70785 ай бұрын
@@GoldenPaints Thanks for the explanation. That makes perfect sense. I tried both out and it turns out that the 1/2" gives a better finish with less streaks than the 1/4".

Two questions please GP master! What do you recommend for applying GP Metallic paint on previously painted brick? My fireplace which fairly smooth cement brick with one coat of old paint. Also metallics are not available in paint samples. So, for a metallic accent wall, whats the best way to select a good metallic color to match/compliment the other walls in the room?
@Deandun1014 жыл бұрын
Sorry Judy, I just saw your question. As long as the paint is in good condition, apply one coat of a latex primer that is close to your final metallic paint color, then paint your final coats. GPW metallic paints are available in 8 oz containers for all 28 colors so I am not sure about your second question.
@judyhawkins57704 жыл бұрын
@@Deandun101 Thank you! Good to know about the 8 oz sizes, perfect.

Do you water down the paint ?
@GoldenPaints Жыл бұрын
Hi, Hayley. So sorry for the delay. The paint does not have to be thinned down, but if thinning is desired, it is only recommended to add up to 4oz of water per quart.

Whats the difference between this and your acrylics? Can u use this on canvas?
@GoldenPaints11 ай бұрын
GPW products are designed for architectural use on rigid supports. GOLDEN Acrylics are designed for use by artists and undergo more extensive compatibility and performance testing to ensure the products will stand the test of time that is demanded for fine works of art.

@Summittree.3 жыл бұрын
Well what if you don’t have crown molding to tape the ceiling.
@Deandun1013 жыл бұрын
Use a 2 inch "delicate surface" tape to protect the ceiling and it will work just the same. Ceiling edges are notorious for having a weak paint bond because of the dust left after sanding.

can i mix metallic powder with matt wall paint?
@Deandun1014 жыл бұрын
Real metallic powder will oxidise and turn green. Besides that, opaque wall paint will (for want of a better term) suffocate the metallic shimmer of any metallic pigment.

So...what would you say that TOTAL cost was to paint those two walls?
@Deandun1013 жыл бұрын
The walls are 66 sqft total. A quart of paint will cover 100 sqft in one coat. So.., two coats = 132 sqft which would take two quarts of metallic paint. Retail- about $72.
@stephanies.97864 жыл бұрын
I did this but still ended up with big stripes.
@Deandun1014 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephanie, It could be that the room is hot or that you are applying it too thin which makes the metallic paint dry too fast. Make sure to use a 1/2" nap roller cover (or longer). You could also also add a 1/4 quantity of Sheer Glazing Medium to the paint before you apply the next coat. That would be 1 cup glaze to a quart of paint or 1 quart to a gallon of paint. That will definitely give the paint more "wet" time. Good Luck Dean Sickler Golden Paintworks Commercial Education Specialist
