Excellent video. I'm a historic restoration carpenter and I've never met anyone that showed how to putty in a wood sash this quick and clearly.

Great video! A few questions for anyone who knows: Do I need to condition raw wood before linseed putty for longevity? What type of paint - is oil base necessary? We can't get oil base here in Canada now - would acrylic even stick to an oil glaze? How do I clean off the window after - is there a video? Is there benefit to linseed vs other glazing compounds like Red Devil? I'm in an old home that moves slightly with the seasons, so flexibility seems an important factor to me. Thank you!

@@mohsenmohsen8145 The linseed oil will dry/polymerize with time without additives. You don't need it to get super hard right away. It cures after it has been painted with Linseed Oil Paint, retaining superior flexibility, especially in comparison to many modern putty/glazing products. I hope that makes sense!

Yes: Linseed oil putty is used to fill cracks and then painted over with the linseed oil paint right away. Linseed oil putty is not compatible with Acrylic or other plastic fillers etc.

How long does this stuff last once applied per instructions (without repainting and such)? Assume average rain and daily direct sun.
@Earthandflaxstudio

Longevity does depend on exposure and climate. I recommend a visual inspection every 5 years to just get a sense of condition and re-oil/repaint the putty line every 8-10 years or so. If there is damage to the putty line for example, it is ideal to catch it quickly to avoid further damage. You can spot treat areas with a Viking Purified Raw Linseed Oil and Linseed Oil Putty slurry, dust with chalk, and repaint immediately with Linseed Oil Paint - steps quite unique to these traditional materials. Let me know what additional questions come up.

Does linseed putty ever gets hard?! I did my first window, month ago and it's still kinda soft. Dont know how it's should be?! :)
@Earthandflaxstudio
@Earthandflaxstudio 4 жыл бұрын
If you use it the recommended way and paint immediately after glazing with Linseed Oil Paint it remains quite flexible under the protective paint layer. This is a good thing as most putty or glazing products dry too hard. If you wait to paint, allowing the Linseed Oil Putty to cure, it will be feel much harder. For your current project, just be careful in terms of avoiding putting a finger in your putty line during install, etc. but it sounds like it is as it should be. Let me know if any additional questions come up.

You do not want putty to harden but rather wait till it forms a 'skin' you can paint/varnish over to prevent it from hardening over time and cracking. While the polymerization reaction requires only oxygen the weather will have an effect on the time taken for the skin to form especially as your doing it in winter. Be patient it can take month or two to skin over.
@Earthandflaxstudio
@Earthandflaxstudio 3 жыл бұрын
@@user-zt4ry9hm9u Thank you for your comment. You are correct when it comes to most putty or glazing products on the market but Linseed Oil Putty can be painted immediately with Linseed Oil Paint. You do not want it to skin over but should backbed, set glass and pins, glaze, and paint in one day. This is one of the biggest benefits of using traditional materials for window restoration. If you do wait to paint, then yes, you must wait for the Linseed Oil Putty to cure fully before painting with Linseed Oil Paint which can take over a month. Hope this is helpful - if you have any additional questions, feel free to reach out to info@earthandflax.com.

I was told that you should not trim the paint, but rather use masking tape or freehand, since trimming will make a sharp shelf for water to rest on.
@Earthandflaxstudio
@Earthandflaxstudio 6 жыл бұрын
That is a factor with acrylic, plastic paints but with Linseed Oil Paint trimming is a common practice and does not compromise the putty line. Of course, each craftsperson has there own preferences and there is no issues with freehand. I have tried taping and in my experience the Linseed Oil Paint can bleed under the tape anyway and require a clean-up. Thanks for your comment. If you ever have any questions, feel free to email info@earthandflax.com!

You say to prime immediately after glazing with the putty. Shouldn't you wait until it forms a skin at least or let it cure first before priming?
@Earthandflaxstudio

With Linseed Oil Putty you can paint immediately with Linseed Oil Paint. A great advantage and time safer when working with the traditional materials. If you do not use Linseed Oil Paint, you must wait until the putty completely cures before painting like most conventional glazing putty products. @@videoman2306 Putty is not meant to dry out completely, if it does it will crack. Putty should form a 'skin' in 1-2 months depending on conditions. It should be painted/varnished to prevent the putty from drying out further. Most window glaziers today will use silicone instead of linseed oil putty for obvious reasons, be patient It can take along time especially during winter.

Do you ever have to prime before glazing
@Earthandflaxstudio
@Earthandflaxstudio 5 жыл бұрын
You do not have to prime with Linseed Oil Paint before glazing, although I know some folks do. There are a few different techniques and one is to prime the sash before glazing and not to use the shellac in the glazing grooves. You want to ensure the wood is well nourished with Purified Linseed Oil before glazing with this method. Hope to do an additional video on that process sometime soon. Thanks for your comment. Feels see to reach out with additional questions at info@earthandflax.com anytime.

While I agree with your technique, your statements about linseed oil are somewhat misleading. Silicone based glazes such as Corning's 1199 silicone glaze will last just as long, however replacing glass later is more difficult to remove. I like the workability of linseed based glaze and use it regularly. The mistruth however is that an non-organic glaze will work as well. The only thing that makes most oil products non-organic is the addition of metal salts to speed curing time. Lastly, any quality oil base paint will provide a good bond to glass, the base oil is of little concern.
