This is just gorgeous. Ppl make it soind like glazing is so hard and scarey. Many Antiques IMO need glaze to bring out the ornate design's in the piece. I love Antiqueing with browns and never thought of black or how to even do it. You make it look so effortless and I believe now that it really is. Just perhaps a bit time consuming and messy but totally worth the extra step so many are afraid of. Ive heard the term muddy glazing and clean. You exsplained it perfectly that you need a topcoat first. Im assumming a muddy glaze is before topcoat and will change the color of your paint job to a more dark rustic color and then apply topcoat but done the same way. Put it on in sections and then wipe it off? Thank you for the help on this one bc I've been wanting to glaze for a while now. Very helpful.

Thank you! This chair sold immediately once I was finished. I believe the black glaze is what did the trick. It really made all those interesting details just POP! I recently did another tutorial last week on black glaze again. Yes I think a lot of people are afraid to glaze and I get it. I was terrified the first time I did it. You really think you are ruining your freshly painted piece of furniture but the results are SO WORTH IT! You are understanding it correctly muddy vs. clean. If you don't put on a topcoat, the glaze with definitely change your paint color. If you apply a topcoat the glaze should then just sit on top of your topcoat and not change the color of paint. I work in small sections and wipe off. I love using baby wipes for this process. I use the baby wipes when I'm doing the clean glaze look. I'm so glad you found this video helpful!

Very helpful! Thank you! So you don’t necessarily need a top coat after the glaze? I’m thinking of adding glaze to a piece of furniture done with enamel. Could I mix the black glaze with a little bit of the enamel? Would that help and make it so I really don’t need to worry about a top coat? Thanks again

Can I use stain instead glaze ?
@madelinejeanantiquesrestor90743 жыл бұрын
You can use stain as a glaze. I did another tutorial showing that as well.
So I’m still confused. What kind of paint can I use this on? Will enamel, latex, acrylic work? What about Rustoleum color spray paint? And do I have to put a topcoat on the spray paint, glaze it, then spray another topcoat on it? I have a can of Grey rustoleum spray paint I want to use on my nightstand drawers. What kind of topcoat should I put on after? And oil-based polyurethane?? I’m so confused cuz I bought a can of rustoleum” gloss top coat thinking that would be enough to protect but it doesn’t say what kind of topcoat it is 🤔

I've used glaze over latex, chalk paint and enamel paint. I have not tried it over spray paint or acrylic paint. I normally apply a topcoat and then the glaze over that. That way you can manipulate the glaze easier. Depends on the product whether or not I put on another topcoat. Once the glaze dries it's up to you. If you like a flatter/matte look leave as it. If you want the glaze to have a sheen then add another topcoat afterwards. Your type of topcoat full depends on what you have been painting with....water based or oil based?
