Hi there, very nice chairs, great job and thank you for sharing. Decoupage is not a fancy word for gluing, it is simply the French word for cutting up ;)

thank you for the inspiring video, I tried glueing thick damask furniture to my desk and applied much craft glue, but it did not stick even though it dried and I applied a thick layer under and on the material itself..help please
@GinaParis
@GinaParis 2 жыл бұрын
I’m sorry you’re having so much trouble with your project. I don’t have any experience with craft glue, or heavy damask. The fabrics I’ve used are not tightly woven. There are videos on how to apply fabric using Mod Podge. I test different products and fabrics on a sample board prior to applying to a piece of furniture to make sure I’m going to get the desired affect. I don’t know what condition your desk is in, but you may have to sand it, protect it, and start over.

@@GinaParis Thank you for your reply..I noticed a few hours ago that it did indeed stick..in some places..it just needed much longer to totally dry :)

How did you cut the strips of fabrics the perfect size to fit the slats?
@GinaParis
@GinaParis 5 жыл бұрын
I measured the slats, and used a rotary cutter and clear quilting ruler to cut the strips to size.

Great video.. The chair turned out lovely. I want to do some furniture decoupage and was wondering whether you have to use Mod Podge. Over here in the UK it is quite expensive. It seems many folk also use water based varnish (Minwax Polycrylic in the USA) instead of Mod Podge. Have you tried this way? Thanks!
@GinaParis
@GinaParis 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Brian. Thank you for the compliment. To answer your question: Yes, I have used clear Minwax Polycrylic to apply fabric to furniture. I tested polycrylic along side Mod Podge for a different project-- they both worked. I recommend testing polycrylic on a small square of fabric to determine which finish works best and how many coats you will need to apply.

Did you put the five layers of Modge Podge on the top of the material? Did you sand in between coats? How did you know you had to put all those layers on? Was there an indication that the modge podge was not taking?
@GinaParis
@GinaParis 4 жыл бұрын
I applied at least one layer of Modge Podge on the rocker to "glue" the fabric to the wood. I put multiple layers of Modge Podge on the material because I put the rocking chair outside on the porch and wanted to make sure it held up to the weather. After four years, I have just noticed the ends of the fabric curling up--I should have brought the chair inside during the Winter months. I did sand in between layers if I felt there was a need for it. You may see a dry area after the Modge Podge begins to dry if there is not it enough on the fabric.

Decoupage furniture can look amazing but please make sure you are using a damaged piece of furniture or a cheap, basically worthless piece. It is incredible to see the number of valuable antiques being destroyed in the the name of craft these days. People painting, them applying decals and stickers and decoupage. They often had no idea of the piece before they started and it is completely destroyed as far as value.

Thank you for your sound advice on using inexpensive or damaged furniture for painting. The rocking chairs I painted and decoupaged were not valuable; in fact, I found one rocking chair sitting outside at an antique shop. If you're ever in question to as a piece of furniture's value, ask an expert or search it online.

So what though? That’s their prerogative if they want to paint furniture they spent their own money on.
