Hi Philene. My heart is breaking this week, because my adult daughter was denied. I was told that she'd been approved and would receive her income once she finished high school. Nope. I found out on Monday that she was denied -- six months ago! They gave me an appeals package, but it barely applies. NOTHING has changed; it wouldn't. On top of which, it states 60 days; this is six months! But one can hope, I guess. Apparently they asked for information that I didn't send. I don't know what it could have been, but regardless, they showed a listing of what medical they got, and it's all the most important ones. So NOW what do I do? My daughter has early childhood bipolar. She was literally diagnosed at 4 years old. She is one trait away from having autism! I almost hate that she doesn't have that one last trait, because I *think* it would make getting her help easier. Few people understand what it's like to deal with a child who cannot get medically treated very well. They ran a genetics test, and there just isn't anything for her! They show a bunch of yellow lights. (Green means it's a great med for her, yellow is 'iffy', and red means get her off of it; it's ineffective. Nothing was green. All is yellow.) Any idea whatsoever what to say on an appeal, when they saw the paperwork and thought she isn't disabled??????????
@6bluewarriors498

Hi Jennifer, I am so sorry about your struggle. we are going through something similar with my son Gavin and we are still waiting to hear back on his appeal. It's been 6 months. the problem for us also is that he is too "high functioning" and so they say he is doing fine and is not "disabled enough" . I know you said that she is an adult, but is she still involved in school somehow? Does she still have any services from people who can take data? I went to my son't teacher and explained to her that I was not trying to influence what she would say to the state, but she needs to realize that anything she puts that is positive on there will be misconstrued. I told her that the information that she provides needs to include all the accommodations that are made for him and what they have to do to get him to preform at a standard level. The other thing that I quit doing was spending tons of time helping get schoolwork done outside of school and also if homework was taking too much time, then we stopped at a designated point. That was his grades reflect what he is actually doing? What kinds of things is she involved in now? I am trying to think of what advice to give to you that is more pertinent to your situation so that you can have the documentation to show what SSI might not be willing to admit. Don't worry about the deadlines, things will work out with that.. mostly those are there for scare, it doesn't mean she can't apply again or is denied forever. I do try to check in with SSI about once a month to follow up and make sure that they have everything they need so I don't get caught on a technicality again. My other son had a review done and that went off without a hiccup. So everyone's situation is different just as each kid is different I guess. Let me know what else I can do for you. What state do you live in by the way? That might help us figure out more options for helping your daughter. You aren't alone in these things. Loves to you and your family.

Hi :) Do, you will need to submit paystubs from your job each month. If you are unemployed then there won't be paystubs to submit to the Social Security Administration. If you are self-employed, then they will have a way for you to be able to verify the monthly household income. Hope that helps 😁

I had no idea I could receive financial aid. How long did it take you to get your child diagnosed and how old were they? My daughter is two and a half and nonverbal. I am just now getting her into therapy but I know she is on the Spectrum. I actually was doing research on her behavior about 6 months ago and discovered that I have been misdiagnosed my whole life. I was always diagnosed antisocial, anxiety "Spectrum" disorder, Bipolar 1. I realized that I am high functioning but still very much on the Spectrum...

I'm sorry that you have had to deal with that. Unfortunately a lot of people around my age (36) were misdiagnosed as children and were never really able to get the help that they needed when they were young ( 2 of my siblings). I am glad that you are feeling like you are getting more answers. Okay, so about your daughter, one of my boys got diagnosed about age 2 and then the 2nd one was also about 2- 2.5. So your daughter is right in the thick of things right now. As far as getting a diagnosis, that depends on the providers in your area. Most of the time it seems to take anywhere from 3-6 months of being on a waiting list and then 2 weeks to a month to get test results back. It has been an interesting road to walk these last 11 years, but I wouldn't change any of it...I lie.. I would change that I got more sleep, definitely more sleep 🤣, good luck with everything, and I am always happy to answer questions 👍😀

This video gave so much information Thankyou ! And I know this video is old but I just have a few questions . I went into disability office and applied for my non - verbal 3 year old son that was diagnosed with autism and global developmental delay . 2 months later which is now I received a letter in the mail for a interview in 2 weeks do you know if I should bring my son along or is this interview just for me I also have 2 other children ( not on spectrum ) but should I try and look for a babysitter or bring all of my kids with me ? Also I have no income my mom is helping me keep my apartment and my gas and electric on will disability deny me if my mom is helping me financially ? Thankyou soo much for your time
@6bluewarriors498
@6bluewarriors498 4 жыл бұрын
Hi 😊, so you can request that the interview be done over the phone so you don't have to go into the office at all! The closest office to me was 45 mins away. Phone interviews are a great option so you do not have to find a babysitter 👍 Next, the fact that your mom is helping you right now will not affect your eligibility. They only want to know about regular sources of income. Also, there should be programs for help with food, rent, then Medicaid for services and other stuff. There are even programs to help with housing and all kinds of stuff. Hopefully that helps 👍

Is an F84.0 ASD diagnosis included or the same as SSA child "Listing" of autism # 112.10? Which do you put on the form? Or is F84.O ASD diagnosis not available for SSI according to SSA?
@6bluewarriors498

You know, that is a good question. When my boys originally got diagnosed 8 years ago, they were using mild, moderate and severe Autism diagnosis labels. So, as long as you can show that your child's Autism impairs their ability to access education, community activities and progress in life skills, then that is what they need. The wording on the paperwork can be very important. I always tell parents to fill the paperwork out like thongs really are and don't try to sugar coat it for SSI. If feels wrong to focus on the negatives with our children, but there is a time and a place and after you are done filling out the paperwork you go back to looking for the positives and having perpetual optimism for their ability to grow and progress. Hope that helps 😊

Not at all. You have a diagnosis from an accepted source and you have your son in therapy. There is no reason for you not to apply for SSI right away. Many of my friends knew their child had autism and there were things they wanted to do to help them ,but they needed the diagnosis before they could be enrolled or their child could qualify. It is VERY common to apply for all kinds of things right after receiving a diagnosis. Sounds like you are doing all the right things. Keep up the good work. :) Falene

Hi thanks for all the helpful information. I have a question... is it true that once your child gets approved ... you (parent) have to submit on monthly basis all the receipts from every purchases and expenses???
@6bluewarriors498
@6bluewarriors498 6 жыл бұрын
+bebazvidz Hi :) We were never asked to submit receipts for the expenditures. Every 6 months they sent us a form we had to fill out that specified if you used the money for the care and support of the child, or if you ended up saving any of it. If you end up saving it, then they want to know how much. We set up a separate checking account that SSI money was deposited into and then we used it to make pay for large expenditures, like our house payment, car payment, utilities and then we used our personal income in a separate account for day to day expenditures. That way if we ever did have to account for bow the money was spent, we would just have to print off a bank statement. Now, I have had friends who have had to turn in receipts for things that they spent their back payment on. Meaning, you get one large payment for the back pay from the date you apply. My advice is to use the SSI money for large purchaces or expenses so you don't have to worry about turning in a million Wal-Mart receipts. ;)

I tried to apply as an adult with autism and after being denied and fighting through the appeals process over the course of 3+ years they eventually tossed my case out entirely :(
@6bluewarriors498
@6bluewarriors498 6 жыл бұрын
I am so sorry about your struggle. I have a friend who is towards the end of that same battle for two of her kids right now. After 2+ years of fighting and appeals, she has been approved for one, but she doesn't know if her other one will be approved. The funny thing is, the child she doesn't know about yet, probably needs the services more than the one that she has been approved for. When you are higher functioning with certain things involved in being on the spectrum, but still have real, daily, struggles with other things that truly affect your life and ability to function, people have a harder time believing you. My oldest son has what I like to call, "classic autism" because it is very obvious and it is easy to tic off all the boxes in the DSM V for a diagnosis. I don't usually have anyone give me a problem about getting his services or benefits, but my other son on the spectrum, it's a very different story. #2 son is very smart, funny and intelligent. On the surface, people always question me if I am sure that he even has Autism or not, but his struggles behind closed doors or where other people don't get to see the aftermath, can be severe. When people asked us about having two kids on the spectrum, we would usually tell them about how, #1 son has much more obvious problems, but #2 son is sooooo much more difficult to deal with. Again, I am so sorry for your struggles and I don't really know much about Adult SSI, but you are awesome for going through that whole process. It takes courage as an adult to go to people you don't know and talk about your life and your struggles and then to have them tell you that it's not that bad is just awful. Some advice that I have heard from friends who have children that are young adults on the spectrum is that finding a good councilor for their child to talk to was life changing. I have started my #2 and #3 son in counseling and I am already seeing some huge improvements in their ability to cope with stress and anxiety. Good luck, and let me know if you have any other questions that I can help with. Falene

@6bluewarriors498
@6bluewarriors498 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Carlos! It is so overwhelming and confusing when you are first starting down this road. Thank you for being a great parent and caring about your child. One of the first places you can start is your pediatrician. I would call the office and try to set up an appt to talk to your doctor about it. I would ask some questions about what you are seeing at home, but mostly they to use the office for resources. Ask them who they refer out to for an autism evaluation, ask them about where to start. If they don't have any autism specific information ask them about your local early intervention office. The program is called Up to 3 here where we are. It can take a while to get started in services, but they were invaluable in helping me to learn more about my child and how to help them. The services are provided on a sliding fee scale or free, they also take Medicaid, so there is usually little to no cost. Autism speaks.org is also a resource to use on the diagnosis trail. It's a long road, but there are lots of people out there that are struggling with the same things you are. You are not alone. Finding a local autism parent support group is also a great way to find out about your local resources. Your local hospital usually keeps track of the various support groups in the community to help you find one close to you. Sometimes it just take good old Google. I hope that helps and let me know what other questions I can answer for you. Good luck! Falene

About to have my call and I'm confused. We have enough in savings to pay off my van but someone told me that we shouldn't do that and that we don't have to claim my husbands car that we already own. But I also read that they count your savings so if we have all that money in there won't that also be a problem.
@6bluewarriors498
@6bluewarriors498 6 жыл бұрын
Hi :) Hopefully I am getting back to you before you have your call. Yes, they will count your savings against you for sure. They will only allow you to have one vehicle that you don't have to count. They will also look into how much equity you have in a vehicle. If you are still making payments on it, but you can sell it for a profit of $3000, That sounds against you too. It's a tough thing. We ended up leasing a car and having one paid off. Since it was a lease, it didn't count as an asset and we never accumulated equity. We had our van paid off. Sometimes it feels like you are getting punished for being responsible and putting money aside for emergencies. If you have someone you trust that can put your savings in their name, and they don't touch it, that could be a way, but these kinds of decisions are always tough. Good luck, let me know if you have other questions. Falene

Hello I have a question. My son was diagnosed with autism through test done at his school. He hasn't been seen by his doctor for anything pertaining to autism. Can they get the information they need just from the school and everyone who has been involved with him or will his doctor need to be onboard and refer him to somewhere as well before I apply.
@6bluewarriors498
@6bluewarriors498 4 жыл бұрын
Hi :) So a school can't give a formal diagnosis. So you will have to get a diagnosis from a medical professional. If you Google, " Authorized professionals to give an Autism diagnosis" that will give you some idea of who can give your son a formal diagnosis. Also add your specific state to the end of the Google search. Some states require specific tests to be done. During the SSI process, they will request all the info that the school has collected as well, but you will most likely need additional diagnostic information.

@6bluewarriors498
@6bluewarriors498 4 жыл бұрын
So, I wouldn't wait for the school to get the process started. It takes a few months and if you get him evaluated by the school district in that time, they will request that info too, but they don't have to have school info on a child that young. Our school districts do have early intervention preschools for kids. Both my older boys went through it and it was great for them. I would just call your school district office and asked to be sent over to the early intervention preschool program. Tell them that your son has been diagnosed and you want to see what can be done for him. My boys both got two years of preschool for free.

Hi, i want to apply for ssi ,but i don't work im a sahm of 4 kids and my oldest son is autstic.. I live with my boyfriend he pays the bills but he works on his own as a mechanic. He gets paid cash so how can we prove our income?
@6bluewarriors498
@6bluewarriors498 6 жыл бұрын
+Elizabeth Rubio Hello:D, so what you could probably do is show income tax returns as proof of income. The AD administration wouild be able to look at things on a case by case basis and then they will tell you want kinds of things they need as proof of income. I would just apply and then let them tell you what you need to do. You might not even need to report your boyfriend's income, it might just need to be yours, I do, but that is the AS I administration's job to figure it out. It doesn't hurt you. I have a friend who is a single sahm to 3 kids and the DID is basically her only income, so she doesn't have anything to report. Like I said, it's a case by case basis :D Sounds like you are a hardworking awsome lady. Good luck, and let me know if I can answer any other questions.

My son has autism, when he was little he used to received SSI, but when my husband started to work for an important company 💵, ssi stoped to sent the money for my son and I needed to start to work too. Now my son is 13 years old, I used to work in an autism program for many years and I stopped to work last December 2019 because I need to give more time to my own son. I wish I can receive that help from social security like before 😢 just to stay with him, help him and you know, you understand my feelings as a special needs mom

Hi! I know this video is old but I have a question. I applied for ssi for my 2 year old that’s autistic spectrum 3... we were scheduled 2 appointments through social security... a general exam and a speech evaluation. He just went to the last exam one on the 23rd... so we’re done with everything finally! So whats next? Like what should I expect

Hi :) So if you have completed all the SSI set up appts, then within the next few weeks you will be notified if you have been approved or not. Sometimes it is through a letter in the mail, sometimes your case worker will call and say they need some additional information (like paystubs...) before they can issue payment, or sometimes you just check your bank accounts one day and the money is there and you get a letter a day or two later. I have met people who have all had different experiences, but it should be something like that. That is exciting to be towards the end of the process hopefully. Good luck 👍😀

+TigerArmy 13 Only if you share finances and she helps pay for part of his support. They ask about sources of income, so if you can count her income( which you DO NOT have to do since you aren't married) then it will be counted in your income. Now, if you are paid child support from your son's other parent, they may count that income. Cheers, thanks for being a great parent. You're awsome.

It helps if your child has an IEP or a 504 since that shows that your child's disability is affecting their day to day life, but having a 504 or an IEP doesn't necessarily mean that they have to be in SPED classes. Just accommodations to help them be more successful at school

Once approved however do they ever expect that you might improve? And what about taking your medications for it and following up with treatment to show the SSA that the condition is still there? Then some people say the medication "zombifies" them. Does the SSA expect you to take medications and be a zombie as a result? To me that is probably worse than the condition they treat. I have learning disabilities and had a diagnosis of autism. I think it is really a portion of the autism spectrum. I have been in special classes all through high school and most of those were special ed classes. I have seen neurologists a long time ago and there were diagnoses of brain damage. I really never see neurologists and psychiatrists though I probably should more. I am just afraid they might want me to take some medication that is worse than my conditions. Can you visit them for yearly psychological and neurological visits just to keep some fresh evidence in the files to prove that you are still disabled? I also have photocopies of my forms that were sent to the SSA. A few of those are a testimony from my teacher on a questionnaire for the judge. Those are all scanned in now and backed up on multiple hard drives with the paper copies somewhere safe, cool and dry. I would love to see a psychiatrist but I need one who realizes the disability that exists and doesn't inflate their success statistics to get paid.

hi girly , so I FINALLY heard back from ssa after almost 4 months. my son was diagnosed in Nov w/ autism level 2 , intellectual disability, and language delay, he's 2, they set me up for 2 exams, one is a pediatric exam, one is psychological. Any tips ? what can I expect ? I don't know why Im nervous! haha is there a chance he can be denied? even if I already have a diagnosis? I thought they had everything they needed . hmm
@6bluewarriors498

So, they always set up additional testing, it's part of their protocol. My tips for going to the testing...tell it.like it is! Don't try to defend your child at those kinds of exams. We as parents always want to put our children in the best light in front of other people. We love them and we see all the cute and adorable things about them and want to showcase that about our kids. However, when it comes to diagnostic testing, you need to set that part of you aside and tell the provider like it is. Ask for a frame of reference before answering questions you are not sure about. Make sure that you don't sugar coat things. Also, if your child takes medication to help with focus or behavior, consider not giving it to them on the evaluation day. That way, the practitioner gets to see more what it is like. Don't try to give them helpful tips for how to.get your child to cooperate or perform the task. Like I said, it's hard to turn off those kinds of things when we spend all our time trying to help and be positive, but unfortunately it's a necessary part of the process. Hope that helps ❤

I have couple questions???? By way awesome video. 1st my son was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder level 2 does that qualify for SSI? My husband active duty military does that effect us from getting it? 3 from the dr I have been referral to ABA and speech therapy? What forms is Social Security looking for? I have one from the developmental pediatrician already? I’m just trying understand the process.
@6bluewarriors498
@6bluewarriors498 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, it is totally confusing. It is my understanding that any Autism diagnosis can qualify you for SSI, because while your child may be higher functioning in some areas, others may be debilitating. So, I always tell people to apply and then just make sure you tell it like it is . Military status shouldn't affect your ability to qualify, because this is about your child. If you have questions about the forms, just pepper the people you talk to on the phone with questions.

Not necessarily, they take a lot of factors into account when calculating the payment. If you are making between 35 and 60,000 you should qualify for some kind of payment. Although it also depends on assets and family size 👍

+Tanya Palau Hi, sorry I took so long to get back to you. The video that I made titled what is Autism could be helpful for you, but you can also google Autism Diagnosis Criteria. Tjen you want to click on the search options that are for the DSM-V. This is the book that professionals use when determining a diagnosis. It lists the conditions and also the key factors required for a diagnosis. Reading something like this helps me to be more informed when I go to Dr. appts and to ask better questions about my child specifically. Let me know if I can answer any other questions or if I can help you :)

No, you will not have to pay it back. You received that money based on your income at the time. They can't go back and make you pay money back because of future income. If you are planning on buying a new house I don't think that anything will change. If you sell your house, you make a profit, and then put the extra money in a savings account, then that money in the bank counts against you as an asset. Hopefully that helps :) Good luck.
