I have autism and have been working on getting disability for over a year now. I have two separate diagnoses and proof that I'm unable to work. My parents told me I have a misplaced doctors note saying I'm unfit to work. My grandparents have been filling out the forms for me since I'm not sure how to. I was told over the phone by an SSA worker last year that I didn't talk like I was autistic. I was speechless. This person only knew me for 10 minutes. I'm having to do another phone call again on the 25th and I'm scared. It really sucks that I have to show so little intelligence in speech and thought to get the support I need.

I have autism and I don’t qualify for Medicaid due to my IQ and ability to care for myself. Medicaid is for people who can’t for themselves . I do qualify for traditional family support. I contacted social security before and I’ll try again. I need help with it.

@@dariusparris2698 I wish you luck in that. In the phone call I had on the 25th the person said similar things to my first call. I'm shocked that SSA workers are allowed to discriminate us with no risk to losing their jobs. I've been waiting on my appeal since May but I may just need to go to court.

My daughter is a nurse and my son-in-law is a high school history teacher. They have 3 other typical children and have 2 vehicles. Their autistic son is the oldest and is verbal mostly only when prompted. He also wets the bed still at age 14 (he stays dry during the day)so they use overnight briefs. I had heard that you can possibly get those briefs paid for.

In a case where I have managed to keep jobs for up to 4 years but break down because I have to hyperfocus and mask the whole time. I certainly can work but I am so close to snapping at some points in the day depending on how much customer interaction I do or stressful situations I find myself in. I have to physically hit things to take my mind off of the stress and prevent an outburst or even self isolate by going to the bathroom to calm down. I even freeze in place and become unresponsive at times if I have had a particularly bad week. At that though I would be to afraid to even go to a hearing and cant even handle small parties yet alone a whole court of people looking at me and listening to what I have to say! Throw a speech impediment and my fear of being recorded or hearing my own which I know would happen, I could have a meltdown mid session. What would my chances be? Should also be noted I almost gave up hope on finding a new job after I lost the first as well because interviews make me so uncomfortable I can hardly speak properly as well...

Does the level of autism come into play? I have a high functioning 10yr old who was diagnosed with Level 1 Autism and ADHD. I am concerned that he would not qualify based on his level of diagnosis. Also, do they count Military retirement or VA disability (non taxable income) as income?

hi! having a hard time finding info to some questions I have online. So I'm mainly wondering how does partial SSI benefits work for a disabled child. We applied today but when everything was turned in now I'm wondering if we will be over the income limit and if so will my son still qualify to get some SSI benefits. Do you know if they take into account child support received for another child in the Family household ? Also is there a scale or chart that I can review to see how a partial amount of SSI is determined. For example, if we go over the income limit by a small amount will that disqualify him from getting ANY SSI or would that give him a partial benefit? My main goal is for him is to get Medicaid so we can actually afford all of the therapies and things that he will need he's 3 with an autistic diagnosis he also has another a genetic disorder. And possibly attention deficit hyper active disorder that has not been diagnosed as of yet.
@6bluewarriors498
@6bluewarriors498 4 жыл бұрын
So, no one will ever give you an exact number on how much you qualify for, but there are many things that they will take into account. Child support received for another child shouldn't count against you because that is income for your other child. Payments are on a gradual scale, so it's not like, oh, you make more than "x", there for you don't qualify for this program. It's more along the line that as your income goes up, then your payment slow9goes down. Now if you make more than $100 grand a year then you probably won't qualify. However if you happen to have 10 kids and make that much, then you might still qualify. It all depends on income, household size, blah, blah, blah. That's why they won't show an income scale, because it's not based solely on income. That's why I started making videos because there is so much information that they don't tell you, you just have to learn by experience. Hope this helps though 😁👍

Hello, will money in stocks be counted against our eligibility? It was originally from a retirement account that hubby took out due to job loss. It allows us to have a year’s cushion in our mortgage payments. Funds are dwindling but still earning a little bit in stocks instead of the bank. My husband is legally blind and my son has autism. I am unable to go back to my work because I am needed to care for them both at home. Kindly advise please and thank you so much.

Can you talk about appealing it for a child if you had it for years for a a autistic child but then they terminated it? My daughter is verbal but can’t dress herself, bath herself, struggles in school, is a danger to herself, has to be supervised, she has chronic constipation since birth requiring daily meds for this, she misses school bc of her stomach issues, she also gets speech & ot. She is 7 and was dx at 2.

Hi Falene. I have three kids and they are all non verbal and each have a diagnosis of Autism. my eldest is 5 and my twins are 4. I was denied SSI but I am reapplying since my husband and were laid off this year from the same company. We are reapplying and want to know do you get SSI for each child or is it a lump sump per household.
@6bluewarriors498

+Amira Beck Hi Anita, sorry to hear about getting laid off, :(. But, no it is not a lump sum per household. It is per child, so when the limit was $680 per month we got $1360 per month. Last I heard it is now $720 per month, per child. So if you have 3 kids who qualify you should be receiving $2160 per month for the household. Good luck and let me know about any other questions I can help with :)

My son turned 3 in October and was Diagnosed with Autism a couple weeks before his 3rd birthday. He is Level 2 on the spectrum and says 10-15 words if that. He cant make out sentences. Currently im 4 months pregnant and im stay at home. My husband is unemployed and going to school full time, however he is receiving housing allowance as a veteran because he goes to school , about $2400 a month. We all are on medicaid because of being low income. Do we qualify for SSI? This journey has been soo hard for me. Its so much information to grasp and im concerned about working in the future because he’s been through soo much already. First brain surgery then ASD. Its been somewhat of a blessing that i havent worked during those times because i was able to provide him with my full attention, unfortunately it has affected us financially. He’s been evaluated by our regional center, by the school district and qualifies for ABA and special education services. Sorry for the long paragraph. Im soo happy ive found your videos!
@6bluewarriors498
@6bluewarriors498 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, you should most definitely qualify for SSI. There are probably several other things that you are eligible for as well, but you are already in contact with the regional center. If he is 3 I would definitely get him involved in ABA right away. My two older boys did the Up to 3 early intervention stuff and then were involved with ABA about 30-40 hours a week until they started school. We also did speech therapy and Occupational Therapy whenever we could. Now that they are in school we mostly do OT and Speech during the summer since we are too busy during the school year. It is so hard and way to look for the positives with not working. I am a dental hygienist and I substitute for people on vacations and maternity leave and stuff, but it is definitely hard to work a regular job because I am in the school for one reason or another quite often. It get easier every year though. My oldest is about to turn 11. We have different struggles now then we did when he was three, but it is still much easier and less stressful now. My oldest was about the same as your 3 year old, he didn't say Mom until he was 5. So, I get where you are coming from there. The biggest thing I would talk to your regional center about if you haven't already is respite care. I am also assuming you live in California with the regional center reference. If that is the case California has a program where the state pays you minimum wage for 40hrs a week to be your son's primary care giver. It's not a lot, but it also takes the pressure of lf trying to find an extra job. California has several other programs that can be so helpful. There is also the 6bluewarriors autism support group Facebook page that I set up to ask questions and talk to other people who are going through the same thing you are. Thanks for reaching out, and best of luck. Don't hesitate to ask questions, I love to help where I can ❤

I am not sure of the name of the program, but a quick Google search for resources at Regional Centers in CA took me to the CA.gov website in the disabilities section. There was a bunch of information there. You might want to spend some time on that CA.gov website and see what programs are available for your son, but for your family as well. It's important to take care of the caregivers ;) Hope that helps. Good luck and always happy to help.

Hi! I'm applying for SSI for my son with Autism and I was recently told that if your child received this SSI income, they aren't able to go to college. Have you heard this or were you told anything like this? I don't know if my son will be able or not, but I certainly don't want something to hold him back if he wants to try either. Thanks!
@6bluewarriors498
@6bluewarriors498 7 жыл бұрын
+jackie T No, I have never heard of that. In fact they will be able to apply for SSI for themselves as an adult when they are 18 and can use the money for educational purposes. That would be discrimination for them not to be able to go to college because they receive SSI. I think someone was misinformed, if they told you that. So don't worry. Getting SSI won't stop your kiddo from going to college ;)

I was wondering if anyone knows how it works if you have 4 children who qualify for benefits? 2 of mine already receive, one just got approved, and one just got diagnosed with a qualifying disease. I myself am in the middle of a claim. I wasn't sure what would happen if we all were approved? Like would we only get a certain amount because others also receive it? And if I got SSD instead of SSI do my kids lose their SSI? Or is anyone's benefits going to knock down the others? Is there a household limit on how much SSI can be received.
@6bluewarriors498
@6bluewarriors498 4 жыл бұрын
So, from what I know, the benefit is per person. There isn't a household limit. Each of my boys received a separate benefit and it wasn't affected by the other recieving SSI. Now if your children are already recieving a benefit from your SSD, they might lose that if they qualify for their own benefit. That is my understanding, but until they process everything, then you won't know entirely for sure. Good luck 👍😊

Hello I was curious, did you have to get a Disability advocate/ Lawyer when you went through the process of getting ssi for your kids?
@6bluewarriors498
@6bluewarriors498 6 жыл бұрын
Hi :) We did NOT have to get a lawyer. I have one friend who has been through a 2 year process without a lawyer, and the just got approval! It come down more to making sure you answer the questions honestly and don't sugar coat anything. You also have to talk to the people who are filling things out for you lime teachers and doctors and tell them to stick to just the treatments your child is receiving or where they fall in relation to their peers, stuff like that. You can't really say anything positive. I have heard stories of people with severe disabilities being denied, because a helpful pediatrician says something about how the child has made great progress. Sad, but true. There are great disability law centers out there that work for free. If you are worried about it, you can always call and get some free advice from one of those agencies :) We got a disability law lawyer to help when the city we lived in wouldn't let us build a fence that we needed even though there was no real reason for it. The disability law center was so wonderful. We were living in Utah at the time though. Good luck :) Falene

@6bluewarriors498
@6bluewarriors498 6 жыл бұрын
+Kid 77 Hi! Okay, so adults can get a diagnosis for Autism or Asperger's. You would just need to see a psychologist or another type of approved professional, (they are listed on the SSI website, you just have to look around for them some.) Most of what the adult diagnosis is based off of, is about your childhood still. The thing I am wondering about though is the fact that you are 21 means that you will age out of the SSI program on your 22nd birthday and then you would be applying for SSD-I. There are several organizations out there that can help you with the process and fillig out paperwork. One such organization that I know of is, Options for Independence. It is a federally mandated program and they are wonderful. They have people who will help you through the process and find out the specifics for the state you live in. We have one where I live and it is a wonderful resource for lots of stuff. So, two things, talk to a therapist and find your local Options for Independence office. :) Good luck, let me know if I can answer any other questions.

It's a lot of work, but I'd suggest you first do research so you understand what qualifies and how you need to articulate your situation. It's important to understand the process that you go thru when the social security admin evaluates you. Depending where you live, it can be impossible to find an attorney. You might have to submit your disability request, wait until it fails, and then look for an attorney. The SSA evaluators are not looking to help you succeed, quite the opposite. I know as I've been through it, it was shocking how all the evidence you submit can be completely ignored. I somehow found an attorney in Florida that has excellent videos and documents that will really help you. All that I used is free, but he does have a paid course. Search Nick Ortiz and Disability Academy, his stuff is very well done. I found a few other videos that are helpful, but the Disability Academy has about 150+ videos with related info about how you need to go about describing your disabilities and functioning limitations (ADL's or activities of daily living). Good luck!

can u elaborate on PT and OT services, how to qualify and how they work.
@6bluewarriors498
@6bluewarriors498 6 жыл бұрын
Okay, So as far as PT services, that would depend on the needs of your child. PT has more to do with recuperating from an injury or surgery. Or if you have certain medical conditions like cerebral palsy. OT has to do with strengthening developmental problems, like weak fine motor skills or sensory over load or sensory under load problems. I did a video on OT on this channel, if you haven't found it already. If your child had any of these needs, there are a couple of ways for them to receive services. Sometimes they can qualify through the school to receive OT services, but they have to be very low down on the charts, like less than 10th percentile among their peer groups. School services are difficult to qualify for sometimes if your child is on the higher functioning end of the spectrum. If you are worried about your child needing these services, you can always request an eval to be done by the school. It is best to put your request in writing. I need to do a video about requesting school services...anyway. So if you are looking to go the insurance or private pay route, there really aren't any qualifications that have to be met. You simply find a provider and then they will do an evaluation to find your child's deficits and then they will create a treatment plan based on what they find. With school based services, the help they give your child HAS to do with things they can see and affects them at school. When you go through insurance or private pay, they will look at your child as a whole. I LOVE doing services through both when possible. I like to be able to find out from multiple people about my child so that I get a better picture overall, plus I can ask them about the services that I am receiving from the other one so that I become more knowledgeable about the subject and I can start to look for needs that my child may have on my own or when we moved, I was confident starting at a new provider's office and answering their questions about my child and their needs intelligently. Hope this helps. Let me know about any other questions. Falene

Yes, you can apply for SSI and yes it is separate from the yearly tax credit. Also SSI income doesn't get counted for tax purposes. It is supposed to supplement your income, not be something else that would be a financial burden

My 3 y/o daughter was just diagnosed with autism. She has the vocabulary of a 20 month old Which are basic words such as hi,bye,dad. She isn't potty trained, can be violent such as hitting others, smacking herself in the face, hairpulling, terrible screaming, has repetitive behavior and extreme sleep issues despite being on medicine! She is in pre-k for 2 days a week where she receives speech therapy. I haven't been able to keep a job since about her first birthday. No one can handle her. I've had babysitters but been called to come back 20 minutes to 2 hours after drop off. My fiance is the only one working and we own one vehicle. Do you think ssi is something I should consider?

Heck to the Yes!!!! That is the kind of situation that SSI is meant for. That way you can be at home with your daughter and not have to stress as much about it. One of my best friends is a single mom that has twin boys with autism and a younger daughter. Every time she tries to hold down a job she ends up needing to leave because she can't find reliable child care. I have also had some difficulty with this as well, so I can feel your pain. It might not be as much as you could make at a full time job, but between medicaid and the money you can save in your budget by having someone home, it felt to me like it almost evened things out. Plus I was so much less stressed. Plus if you qualify for SSI you will qualify for your daughter to have medicaid (at the least). You should also qualify for WIC and if she has medicaid then you can get diapers for free from medicaid ( talk about a budget saver). I felt less stressed out then I had in years once we had these programs in place. I wasn't as concerned with potty training anymore since the diapers weren't coming out of my budget...so many things. YOu can also use the money to pay for respite care for yourself, so that you can go on a date with your fiance once in a while. We always put the kids to bed and then would go on a date and then people didn't mind babysitting for us at all. I hope you get a chance to go through some of the other videos that I have posted that deal with some of these other issues that you are dealing with in your life. It's one of those, " Just keep swimming" situations. You can make it if you just take things one day, one hour even, at a time. You are one of many warrior moms fighting the good fight each and everyday for the ones that we love. Good luck, and let me know if you have any other questions. Falene

Agnes Coffey Hey, me again. So I applied and my daughter was approved! My question now is how long will it take before they actually start sending payments? It’s been about 3 weeks since I was told she was approved and to send my fiancé’s pay stubs in (which I personally delivered to the office two days after approval.) Will it take another couple of months?

What if your married and don't own but are financing 2 vehicles, does this qualify?
@6bluewarriors498
@6bluewarriors498 4 жыл бұрын
So, that is where it gets tricky. We are financing two vehicles, and if the equity in one of the two vehicles exceeds the allowed amt then that could count against you. I guess because it could be considered a liquid assest if you sold the car. If you were to lease a vehicle, it would never count against you, because it is basically an extended rental. We did that at one time because it kept the payment about what we were paying monthly anyway, but it never gained equity. Anyway, things to think about.
@taavia6360
@taavia6360 4 жыл бұрын
@@6bluewarriors498 Last question, Could you explain what equity in this case means, and what is the allowed amount? If it does exceed will that disqualify you or go against your approved amount? Thanks!
@6bluewarriors498
@6bluewarriors498 4 жыл бұрын
@@taavia6360 Absolutely, so equity in this case is the value of the vehicle above what you owe. So if the car is worth $5000 and you only owe $3000 left on it, there is $2000 of positive equity left. So if you sold the car you would get to keep $2000 after you pay off your loan. So, the limit is $2000 of equity maybe $3000, but they take one of your cars and don't count it at all, no matter how much equity you have in it. So always use the car with the most equity as you one car that doesn't count 👍

So I know this is an old video, but I was hoping you will still see and respond! So much helpful information. So my son is 3, almost four. He only talks when prompted, and when he does he doesn’t talk well at all. Sometimes he may say car, mama, dada, but not much else without being prompted. He can be aggressive sometimes and very hyper active. I’ve had to quit multiple jobs due to no one being able to handle him or him being mistreated :( He’s in ABA, speech, and OT. He has pre k and receives an IEP and speech there. my husband makes about $45000 a year BEFORE taxes. He brings in about $2500 a month after taxes. We do t qualify for any assistance except WIC and Medicaid for our children (we have a 15 month old daughter who is typical as far as we know so far) I want to work eventually if things get better, but right now I can’t with all the therapy, no care or help with him, and yeah. He hasn’t received his diagnosis yet, but we are waiting. He isn’t potty trained also. Do you think we could qualify?
@brittanymariemilby
@brittanymariemilby Жыл бұрын
Also wanted to add we have no savings. The money we get from tax refunds goes straight to paying off credit cards, and loans we took out during the year to survive. No assets. We rent a townhouse, and my husband borrowed a car from his dad that’s in his dads name to go to work in. And we have our good car that’s almost paid off but still leasing it. Nothing else I don’t think that would be considered assets.

Can my kids get SSI why I’m living in Canada? They’re American citizens.
@6bluewarriors498
@6bluewarriors498 5 жыл бұрын
Actually, no. There is a question where they ask if your child has been in a facility, like assisted living or out of the country for more than 30 days. As soon as you are living in the US again, then they can. Sorry, you can always double check with the SSI administration, your situation could be different.

@6bluewarriors498
@6bluewarriors498 5 жыл бұрын
What can I help you with? I do know that they don't count 1 car as an asset. If you have a 2nd car and it isn't paid for, then they can only count the value for what you could get if you sold it. Of you have a lease for your 2nd car, it doesn't count at all since it technically isn't your car, it's just a long term rental.

6BlueWarriors It was resolved. We own one car. And are making payments on a 2nd car. 2 cars are necessary for our family. Wife needs car to get to work, I need other car to drive son to ABA an hour away...but it all don’t matter because we were told he was approved. We are just waiting on the funds to start. 👍🏻. It has been a long and stressful process.

It always is. I am sorry about that, but happy that your son was approved. Hopefully some day you can get your ABA services done in your home. My 10 year old did ABA for 2 years through Utah State University, but once we started working in the home he made even more progress. I am a huge fan of in-home therapy whenever it is feasible. Good luck 👍

@6bluewarriors498 5 жыл бұрын
So, I don't think it necessarily has to do with how severe your child's autism is, because they may have fewer things they struggle with then your other children, but it matters how much those things affect their ability to access things in daily life and eventually for how it affects their ability to access education, and then the work force. One of my children is less severe, but his anxiety can get so overwhelming and he doesn't ask for help that he shuts down at school and can end up failing classes because of his refusal to complete assignments. It really just depends on how Autism affects your child. It doesn't hurt to apply, and I always tell people to make sure and fill out paperwork or when talking to professional, to tell it like it is. No one benefits from you sugar coating your child's difficulties. Good luck ❤👍
