If you’re looking for financial aid, the first place to start is by submitting your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You might be awarded grants, scholarships and federal student loans. But even with your financial aid award package, you might still not have enough to cover all of your educational costs.
That’s where private student loans can help. Private student loans can bridge the gap in funding to make sure you have the funds you need to attend school. In this video, we’ll cover how to apply for student loans from private financial institutions.

Are you able to get your money before school starts? I am studying internationally and need to prove i have a certain amount before the school starts (which is through a loan)

Usually the disbursement period for refunds is about three to four weeks into the semester, yet certain schools may have a particular timeframe that they follow. You may want to contact your school directly.

You can apply to university first then once you've been accepted you can fill out your FASFA and choose which school to receive financial aid offers from.

Try contacting a FAFSA rep before moving onto private student loans. After you have exhausted all federal student loan options, here is a blog to get you started with private student loans: www.studentloanplanner.com/when-apply-private-student-loans/. Here is another blog with banks we work with:www.studentloanplanner.com/private-student-loans/. Again, do your due diligence in trying to get some form of federal financial aid first.

It depends if you're going the private or federal route. We recommend applying for federal first and if that doesn't cover the cost of education to seek out private.

@@d3r3kyasmar you would pretty much apply to the university first, then if you get accepted in they’ll normally walk you through the loan process

Shame on you for suggesting that the financial aid office is not looking out for the financial well-being of their students "because it's not their job". This reeks of self-promotion and desperate direction toward private loan borrowing. Double shame. Private loans are the LAST loans a student borrower should turn to in pursuing higher education due to higher interest rates AND more difficult repayment terms. Well done on knowing the basics. Now, do better in presenting them in a less self-serving way without minimizing the hard work done by financial aid offices all across the country.
