I would use solid timber, not iron on edging as people tend to lean on the front of a stair tread heavily. Iron on will peel off.

But after watching you I scored and cut a sample sheet with my 60 teeth triton blade and the difference was amazing. I will recut my drawer fronts. Thankyou. Guys, this is a good video. Remember never to follow videos that show you trim the melamine with a sharp knife, using a sharp knife is terribly wrong and will ruin your work! Even the manufacturer manual may say so but do not follow. I've never seen anyone creating a good result with a knife, of course including myself who have just ruined a hutch :(

3rd video I'm watching and liking that you took the time to do it and it works for you but I see a few issues with. the trimmer doesn't work properly when the edging is old or has been sitting in the cupboard for a long time. the chisel is for experts only, i would tell newbies to use a knife and finally, don't worry about the spacing, it makes no difference if you have more on one side or the other, you can trim it off. Thumbs up for the video still.

Great vid Dave. Is that the really thin iron tape you get from Bunnings? If not is it the thicker rubbery one that looks more professional like out if a cabinet makers has done it? I am looking at making one of those DIY edge banders myself as I have a heap of cabinets to make.

Using a chisel to cut the excess? Looks like a good way to scratch the surface. Use a palm router with a trimming cutter or cut it with an abrasive. By abrasive, I mean something like a 120 grit open mesh sheet on a velcro block. Work at an angle towards the excess material so as not to lift it, work slowly and carefully at the edge until it gets thin enought to simply peel off. Clean up the laminate edge with the same abrasive block before you do any sticking. I don't trust iron on adhesives, but if I have to use them, I'll use a hot air gun and a wallpaper seam roller. Alternatively, use a contact adhesive on the edging strip and the raw chipboard edge. If you don't give it a good sanding, all those little bits of chipboard will show through the laminate. Tidy workshop by the way.
@VirtualArcades4 жыл бұрын
Why not just use a trim router with a bearing on the bit and cut it perfectly? Good video :)

I bought a double sided edge trimmer from a company we both know well and when I used it - it chewed up the side of the melamine board - I noticed you trimmed one side with a chisel first - is that the secret or maybe my edge stripping was pretty old - any way I am reluctant to use the edge trimmer now and will settle for a chisel or sharp blade and then use a file for finishing it off. regards Mike

Is it easier to put edge banding on after you make all your cuts, or before you cut and then add as needed afterwards?
@DavidStanton3 жыл бұрын
Hi Dan Urquhart! do it when you have made your cuts, not after the unit is assembled. If you do it right at the beginning two things happem. you waste a lot of tape on offcuts and also the tape will stretch over a long section as you apply heat.

looks easy, till I tried it the other day. Iron was hot, edging glue did not activate properly, rolling up behind the iron, and warping and making bubbles. Tried a hotter iron, even worse. Colder iron, no result. Threw away the roll of edging, left the shelves as is.
