You can have proximal shin pain as well as the common distal shin pain that is medically known as Medial tibial stress syndrome (shin splints), however you have to rule out any involvement from the knee joint as this can be responsible for the pain.If the pain is lower and medially in relation to the knee then that is where the MCL inserts, also the pes anserinus (satorius,gracilis and semitend attachment and the bursa) can also be the source of pain, consult a physical therapist if unsure, John

Hi, Thanks for the comment. Yes try and put the foot into an extended position (Dorsiflexion) and also try and turn the foot out (Everted position) as this will put the tibialis posterior in a lengthened position. Hope that helps, regards John Gibbons

The foot should be in a position of dorsi flexion and eversion to place the tib posterior and deep flexors into a lengthened position. Hope that helps.

hey ,if anyone else trying to find out splints shin try Mackorny Run Fast Blueprint (should be on google have a look )? It is a great one of a kind product for getting rid of shin splints without the hard work. Ive heard some super things about it and my mate got excellent results with it.

Hi John, nice video, any recommendations for someone that has medial shin splints but often gets anterier pain (splints) at the same time. I am rather flat footed and overpronate. I recently saw a podiatrist, whom recommend a pair of Nike Luna Eclipses. I am hoping taping with, stretching and the new shoes will get me running again. thanks

Hi, thanks for the comment. I always say to athletes that the 'Cause' of shin pain is either caused by what you are running 'IN' or running 'ON' - that means you need a decent pair of running trainers that are recommended for you and the type of terrain, a camber might cause more pain on one side of the shin as one foot will pronate more than other. The other main cause is an overpronated foot, this needs a control correction by the use of an Orthortic. The Tape is helping the 'Symptoms' John

Not certain about the points made but ,if anyone else needs to find out about prevent shin splints when running try Mackorny Run Fast Blueprint (just google it )? It is a great one off product for getting rid of shin splints without the hard work. Ive heard some awesome things about it and my m8 got cool success with it.

If the pain is on the center of the tibia rather than on the medial side then it could be a stress response to the bone that could lead to a stress fracture. If it hurts when you run then this is what it could be, if the pain is on the anterior muscles then you might have an anterior compartment syndrome. Hard to say without seeing you. Hope that helps.

Hi, if you apply the tape then swim straight away then it might come off in water, however if you apply then leave a few hours so it has had more time to stick to the skin then it should be ok. John

Hello John! Im very frustrated with my lower leg pain when i go out for a walk/run but it seems to me that its not shin splint. Most video/article, including yours, point on the inside part of the leg. If front is 12, my paint is on the 2 - 3 o'clock position of the lower leg. do you have idea what this is? and if taping can ease/help me.? thanks!

It will stay on if you use the correct tape, Rocktape have a tape designed for athletes that train in water

I tape my leg like this over 12 hours before I go run with it and the part under my ankle always peels off after my first run and then my shin starts killing me. It's most likely the combination of sweat and being under my sock that cause this. Any tips on a better way to anchor it down?

I cant find any applications for my shin splint, I no longer have pain in the lower leg, it's about 3 to 4 inches below my knee but it's the same type of pain. Any ideas?

Thank you so much for the video, it really helps. I've been suffering from medial tibial stress syndrome for couple of days, and I've got a half marathon in two weeks. I just would like to know if it'd be convenient to run a half marathon with tapes on my leg. Is there any method which would help me to have a 21k run with relatively less pain? Thanks a lot in advance for your advices, and thanks once again for your helpful videos.

John, I just want to give you a feedback: I did 10k instead of 21k as I did not want to force it too much, and I did my best having the tape on the way you show in the video. It magically worked out in my case I noticed no pain or no post-activity shin splint symptoms. I really thank you so much for your helps and advice. All the best from Turkey.

It might well be the tape you are using as I apply to triathletes and the tape stays on for a few days, try a different product

Hi great video. I have shin splints due to skating in quads skates. Running and jogging hasn't caused it. I just started roller derby training 2 months ago and the pain was worse. I have an apt with a sport medicine doc next month, but I need help now. I really love this sport and I am not quitting. Some days are bad and some are okay and I can skate great. Will this tape technique work for me also. I also just got custom made inserts for my skates.

My daughter has specific pain in the lower medial tibia from running on hard surfaces, but has no pain when walking. She high jumps and hurdles on her HS team. Pain is on her lead hurdle leg and not her high jumping leg. Tournament is in 3 days! We've tried cupping techniques, rest for 3 weeks, stationary bike, stretching, lots of ice and recently went to chiropractor who suggested tapping. Is this the best technique to apply to her leg? Is it best to tape only when she's competing?

The colour makes no difference, it is how you apply the tape that counts. Maybe you should attend one of my courses in Oxford

It acts a 'Y' strip so you can direct the tape at different angles - regards JG
