Great video! I'm a 56 year old woman who has been figuring things out since I was young and there was no internet, so I am super grateful to have access to expert advice in a visual format that reduces the learning curve and time. I've caulked successfully for years and most of it trial and error so your awesome pro suggestion using the window cleaner is going to be tested out today in my two bathrooms I am caulking. I was vacillating regarding whether to use 100% silicone or acrylic/latex, and you made that decision clear. Thank you for doing what you do and providing excellent information, video and audio content for DIYers!

Side tip: after running a bead, always push the "release" lever on the chalking gun to release pressure on the tube. This keeps the residual pressure from continuing to push material out of the tube.

Yikes wish I saw this a few days ago, just spent 3 days struggling with other methods and sticky stuff everywhere. Some people warn against window clean some recommend windex. I just used alcohol on my finger to smooth the bead but the problem I had in NC Florida was a cold snap and I couldn't get the caulk to run very well so it had blobs. I thought it was a lack of strength in my hands but it was the temp. After I ran a heater it worked better, but tooling the blobs was a nightmare. I am a DIY accomplished craftsperson but wow, this was as bit over my head in tolerance. Wish I saw your instruct, hopefully I won't need to redo it for 10 years, but then at 88 I may just say buzz off, and bleach off the mildew!!! LOL thanx for an excellent presentation. Love your NY/East Coast accent!!

Hi although it is late in the game by years, thanks for the vid. You went through the basics as many actually do not know how to get started. I suggest letting people also know to 1. practice on something inert to become acquainted with tool first. 2. Show people how to stop the flow of silicon! This is the most common spaz out for beginners. Really like the window cleaner (by now everyone has regurgitated release agent tips) and I suck as silicon or anything that commands this type of finesse.

Really great video. I used this method a few years back, and am now trying using the "shaping tools". The tools do give a consistent result, but the problem is when one surface is tiled--like a backsplash--the tool's vertical edge follows the contour of the tiny grout channels between the tiles. The result is a series of tiny warbles in the bead. It's hard to compensate for this with less pressure, as you must pull the tool at an angle and keep it tight on both horizontal and vertical surfaces to avoid just smearing the silicone out like pancake batter. Honestly, I like both methods. The only problem I see with the glass cleaner trick is if you start with a sloppy bead that hasn't adhered well, spraying the glass cleaner eliminates any chance of fixing the imperfections by dragging your finger over the bead. Wondering how you get around that?
@morticae3 жыл бұрын
He said how. Don't start with a sloppy bead that hasn't adhered well. If you do, this technique isn't for you.
@WayPastCrazy25253 жыл бұрын
Good question and points. I too always struggle with the grout lines in-between tiles. The only thing that worked for me was to come back with a rubber caulk tool and swipe out the extra caulk from the grout lines. It's time-consuming but not sure if there's another option.

Are those angular silicone finishing tools for making a clean line with the bead ever necessary?

Yes, if you don't want to get your finger gunked up. I use a triangular rubber finishing tool and clean it with mineral spirits, as recommended by GE. You can buy the tool from Sherwin Williams.
@matts16833 жыл бұрын
Great video. I always made a mess with silicone but never had a problem with caulk - not anymore thanks to you. The reason for choosing the ammonia-free window cleaner over its regular version is because ammonia will turn your silicone yellow over time. That's the same reason why not to use it on clear plastic either. Window cleaner works on silicone because it has alcohol in it, which is a solvent. Just FYI. Thanks again.
@AznTony3603 жыл бұрын
Figured out why you need an ammonia free window cleaner for this. Class 2 GE silicone uses ammonia as a curing agent, if you used a window cleaner with ammonia, itll help the silicone cure where you dont want it. Class 1 GE silicone uses some sort of acid as the curing agent. Guessing it wont matter for Class 1 silicone whether its ammonia free or not.

Question please. I am going to re-bead all my new windows at the sill because the caulk cracked and separated. Earlier this year, the installation company did not use a large enough bead at the sill, so the caulk did not set well. Can I use silicone or should I only use caulk? I bought a tube of White Lightening brand "Silicone Ultra" because I was going to use it for the bathroom window, but figured I could use the rest for the other 7 windows also. Great video and instructions, thanks in advance.
@Vizkos5 жыл бұрын
Rule of thumb I use: If exposed to water/moisture, always use silicone sealant, and never use a latex or acrylic caulk. Your WL Silicone Ultra should be fine for the other windows as well. Your container usually specifies whether its suitable for interior and/or exterior, the WL Silicone Ultra I am looking at now is indeed interior and exterior. Downside is most silicone sealants are not paintable, so take that into account.

Sweet. I would of liked to know how big of a hole to cut the nozzle for the size of the crack or gap of the tiles
@robo19675 жыл бұрын
Start at smaller hole (about 1/8") But (ALWAYS) do some practice on any corner of any connected at 90 DEG surfaces: two planks, stones, whatever... You will see if a silicone path is wide enough for you or not. Because you actually determine how wide you want it. You can make it even 1/3 of inch wide over a very narrow corner. But usually - what you need is 1. cover the connection gap. 2. make it looking not too thin or not too wide. Which means: between 1/8 & 1/4 inch wide. Anyways... practice first! You will soon find out that the most difficult part is synchronizing your gun's speed with a pressure you use on the trigger pushing that silicone out. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Great vidoe. Wish I watched before I just made a mess on my standing frame less shower. Suddenly it’s white now and wet but I did wait for 48 hours ( used GE). Now what to do for cure ? Do you have any videos to remove caulking first or i can reapply on top of old one ? Thank you in advance

@nastazioromanos95316 жыл бұрын
Need two cuts on the nozzle - one at an angle (dependent on the position of the gun during application) and one vertical so that you allow enough material for the bead to shape past the nozzle. To perfect the bead you need a squidgy kit and use the right squidgy bits based on your surfaces (i.e. need to use guides if you want perfect bead at grout points).

how do I prep the area? I need to add fresh silicone to an undermount sink n rental property. The tenants have let the current silicone get icky so that it is no longer water tight.

When taking out silicon it usually leaves a thin film that is difficult to remove. A product called Sili Kill is applied which eats into silicon so that it can be 100% removed. It costs about £10 a tube but is the best professional product i have come across in 35 years of tiling and doing silicon.

Thanks for the comment. Additional products not really necessary. A light scouring pad and some soup will remove the residue you're talking about. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for the refresher course. I have done this before in the past but been a while. With good technique you can apply like a pro.

Excellent - just about to run a bead down two internal edges in my boat - knew there had to be a cleaner way than last time. Greatly appreciated your vid down here in Australia.

When using silicon caulk on joints adjacent to the quartz or fiberglass shower, will the glass cleaner or alcohol effect the oil based painted sheetrock?
