Note that the 7.0 GPA is only applied if your first class honours or PhD is your most recent study. So if you completed a coursework masters after honours or a graduate diploma after a PhD, the masters and graduate diploma GPA will be counted towards your GPA, and your honours and PhD will be ignored.

Ah yes, good point. I didn't catch this technicality but it makes a lot of sense that they'd do it this way

How does the key degree affect the pre-requisite subjects? i.e. you did not do the prerequisite subjects, but have a higher degree.

Thanks for the great video! Just a question on the GPA calc, I'm doing an nursing degree currently so I at least have 8 units in my degree that's pass/fail - can i assume these will be counted as a 5 as per UQ GPA calc?
@jesseosbourne
@jesseosbourne 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Monique, I'm not too sure how this would be treated so it's probably best to contact UQ to confirm how pass/fail units are treated. Best of luck!

Honestly so glad that they brought in prereqs, the automatic 7.0 GPA for first class honours in postgrad work and the adjustments for rurality - if they get rid of any of it my hopes for medicine are d e a d. If you’re unsuccessful this year smash out a 6 month diploma, it would be so worth it!

The 7.0 thing must be amazing to have as some security! I'm sure they won't make any dramatic changes for this application cycle given they've just settled in to their new settings. Yeah the diploma might be something to consider. Hopefully I don't have to thought haha

thank you for the video mate...my question is if GPA 5 and above is maintained..How likely the applicant can get offer??? why I am asking is because DEAKIN says their average GPA selection was 6.76 in the latest round.
@jesseosbourne
@jesseosbourne 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Mohit, yep so the GPA of 5 commonly quoted by universities is a minimum requirement in order to be eligible to apply but does not indicate that a GPA of 5 or above is necessarily competitive. The average GPAs quoted by universities are the averages of the GPAs of applicants who received an interview in each application cycle (some also publish the GPA average of those receiving an offer but this is rare). The likelihood of getting an offer of interview is dependent on a few factors at Deakin. Firstly GPA and GAMSAT combo needs to be relatively competitive (around 6.7 GPA and 70 GAMSAT for non-rural applicants we'll say but this is a rough estimate). The second factor is that they have their bonus scheme which means that GPA and GAMSAT averages may not necessarily be a good measure of competitiveness as we don't always know what bonuses might have been applied to these scores. The final thing is that after interviews, offers are based on interview scores which are not published. All of this is to say that above 5 means you CAN apply but does not mean that you would necessarily have a good chance of an interview. GPAs closer to the average quoted would be a better chance but realistically offers are based on a number of factors. For example, my Deakin GPA is only 5.645 but with my GAMSAT and bonuses, my overall competitiveness sits just above the average. Hopefully this helps clear a few things up :)

Hello! Do you know if I can apply while still completing my masters degree. I finish it before January but not August when the deadline is. Would this disqualify me if I’d prefer they only look at my masters gpa only. Btw love the video!!

Hey Elizabeth, this is taken from the 2023 entry GEMSAS guide for UQ so it's worth checking again when the 2024 entry guide is released. "A subsequent key degree can be a new bachelor level degree, or an approved Honours, Graduate Diploma, Postgraduate Diploma, Masters or Doctoral degree after completion of an acceptable first Bachelor degree. Where multiple key degrees have been completed, the most recently completed key degree will be used as the basis of the GPA assessment. A new key degree must be completed at the end of Semester 1 in the year of application to be included in the assessment. Current study assessments are only available for applicants who are currently completing their first key degree. ... The GPA for the UQ preference is calculated over the entire duration of the degree." So effectively, postgraduate degrees can only be used as the key degree if completed by the end of Semester 1 in the year of application (2023) otherwise your key degree would fall back to your completed undergraduate degree and the Masters degree would not be considered as the Key Degree for GPA calculation. For applications in 2024 for 2025 entry and onwards, the Masters degree would then be an eligible key degree assuming nothing changes. Hope this helps!

So if someone has First Class Honours, will their overall GPA be considered 7.0, or just the GPA for their Honours year?
@jesseosbourne
@jesseosbourne 2 жыл бұрын
From my understanding your entire GPA would be considered as a 7.0 in that case based on this from the GEMSAS guide for UQ: "An Honours degree awarded with class I, IIA, IIB or III, will receive a GPA as per the Honours category in the conversion table" But it's probably worth confirming this with UQ/GEMSAS as to whether this is the case, particularly for integrated undergraduate/honours degrees vs a standalone Honours degree

Dose the Master of Research give you a 7.0 or only PHD?
@jesseosbourne
@jesseosbourne 3 жыл бұрын
They seem to only specify PhD or Masters of Philosophy as being deemed a 7.0 and don't specify anything specific for Masters course (research or coursework) so I'd assume that would mean it is treated the same as a bachelors degree. That is, GPA calculated based on credit weighting of each subject. They don't use the year count back system though so your GPA would only be calculated from the subjects of the Master of Research regardless of its duration and would not include studies from an earlier Bachelor's degree

Hi Jesse.... thanks for making videos about postgrad medicine entry.... I am just a first year bachelor Degree student but have few questions .. 1. Does part time bachelor degree eligible ? 2. if I am transferring between universities to do one degree will it be considered ? 3. if I am doing 2 different degrees at a same time for example Biomed -full time and Cybersecurity- part time so planning to complete biomes first and apply for medicine then continue cybersecurity later so does it matter when I make an application because still I'll be studying cybersecurity but for the application I'll use only biomed? 4. regarding GPA is it overall % or in each and every unit do we need to get above certain % of marks ? 5. from your own experience how much % of marks in each unit will give a chance of getting into medicine ? 6. which university is easy to get into for post grad medicine.... I know its highly competitive but the least toughest is which one ? thanks in advance jess

Hi there, I'm unfortunately not going to be a huge amount of help with these questions. Q1-3 I'm not sure about myself so it's best you check with the uni/admission guide individually to confirm these. Regarding Q4, GPA is calculated based on a GPA score for each subject/unit and this is then averaged for each year and then these yearly averages are used to calculate a weighted/unweighted GPA for the degree/most recent 3 years of equivalent full time study. You would need to look at what % converts to what GPA score for each uni that you are considering. Q5 doesn't really have an answer. There is no individual score that will determine whether someone gets into medicine as there are a number of factors that are all considered together. Q6 also isn't really an answerable question for the same reasons. Every uni does things differently when it comes to admissions so no two unis are directly comparable in terms of their respective difficulties for admission. The reality is there aren't many assurances when it comes to applying and so you really can't anticipate much. I would recommend you contact the relevant universities about your first three questions though as these relate to your eligibility as an applicant. Best of luck!
