I've seen/have been getting quite a few questions about applying decals lately, so I threw together this little how-to on how I apply them.

I tried the hot water technique, I used a few drops of liquid soap, it really made a difference. I do mostly military models and buy a lot of old kits. I always used Luke warm or room temperature water. I find old decals are brittle to begin with, so I am looking forward to try this on those. I hope to see more of you on you tube. Thanks!

BEST decal video yet!!!! Ty very much for the "Dawn" tip... I'm in the middle of a 1993 Revell Jungle Jim Vega funny car.... the side Jungle Jim decal with all the flames and jungle vines and the crazy hair blowing back is a challenge for sure. I was just struggling with the tiny dang back light decals had to find a video for the large crazy side decal and trying the Dawn right now. I just use these cool "light" body's , no model interiors or model tires because I hand build 1/24 -1/25 drag racing slot car chassis's to mount the body's onto. I did build the model supercharged blower engine with zoomies attached to glue in place for show but this particular car uses a pretty powerful slot car motor to be raced on a scaled down 1/4 mi. race track. Around 35-40' actual length. Ty for the tips this particular car I'm very proud of and is beautiful in every way just hope I get these tricky decals on straight without tearing them.

Good advice. The detergent makes the decal slide easier and gives you a little more time to work with it because soaps have a "wetting agent " which lets the water move more fluidly, giving that oiliness you mentioned. More useless information, I know. Good health from Virginia, Don. Cork

Thank god for this. I just came from a video where the guy used three different chemicals to prep the surface, soften the decal, and something else that wasn’t very well communicated.

Some great tips there, but we can’t always use those Slixx decals. Which I think are some of the best. How about dealing with old decals? Like the ones that disintegrate once they hit the water? Or adhesion issues?? Any tips on those?

@ScaleModelTechniques3 жыл бұрын

@slipknotfan22173 жыл бұрын
the blue color is just the backing paper, the decals are on clear foil. think of it as regular stickers, you have an entire white background but you just peel the cut out sticker

How long after applying clear coat (Testors enamel) should I let it cure before applying decals?
@ScaleModelTechniques4 жыл бұрын
Colin D Applied with an airbrush , I'd give it 3-4 days . Spray cans ? It will have to sit for at least 2 weeks if not longer ....

@ScaleModelTechniques4 жыл бұрын
Colin D Sorry , Brudda ! 😂. If you had shot it with enamel cut with SunnySide lacquer thinner through an airbrush , you'd be sitting square . Only other suggestion I can make would be to purchase a food dehydrator with a thermostat and bake it for 24 hours at 105 degrees .....

@@ScaleModelTechniques Not a professional modeler by any means, but I am very meticulous. I did models in my 20s, and now in my 30s getting back into it with more patience and maturity. I do not have any of that equipment lol. I live in SoCal, and it seems to be curing pretty rapidly. Doing a Starsky and Hutch Torino, so the stripe is critical. Thanks for the quick responses.
