Both techniques can he further studied as in Judo for their names "Ko Uchi Gari" and "Ko Soto Gari". The main difference is that in Judo we pull the opponent down while sweeping the fooot, and as we see here the master only sweeps the foot. It's way harder to achieve because of the extremely precise timing. A true master indeed.

I was from Goju Kai. We have a kick called kansetsu-geri (joint kick to the knee. The more famous Yoko geri would be higher than the waist.) Back then in the 80’s/90’s we only practiced Kin-Geri, Mae-Geri, Mawashi-Geri and Kansetsu-Geri. One time our Sempai, during sparring, did a Naihanchi style (a kata we didn’t practise, but I learnt recently that Miyagi Sensei did teach in the early days of Goju) wave kick which sweeped the front leg and kicked down the back leg. Along with a kiai. It was terrifying to see him take out uke’s both legs in a split second. Sempai always said footwork is the most underrated facet of karate practice. What we learnt in Sanchin is that the hara/tan dian/navel is the centre of gravity. Very profound. Sweeps should be one of the first things to learn as a white belt.

The exact same block plus sweep and the same exact punch to a lying opponent is a pattern in one of my kung fu school's taolu/kata! I didn't know how to use it at first, but my teacher showed me when I asked and it is now confirmed by this incredible demonstration! OSU!!

notice the side they got kicked in the faces so easily? yup! it is where their other arm is down near the waist to protect the hip instead of the face. Muay Thai and Kyokushin put both hands up for that reason

Im wearing tights that I borrowed from your mum. Watch 0:23 and tell me he was throwing a punch. Dumbass cant see for shit. He feints with the straight jab and got kicked in the head from the side that his other hand was down. Mt and kyokushin do get kicked in the face only when they make mistakes during the fight of course. Who doesnt make mistakes? If u wanna talk about mistakes, i agree with ya. But this shit is a flaw in the defense of shotokan style im talking about. Nice try being smartass

4 years late but, it's only point competitions where they do that since it gives more reach to score and some thing related to rulings of the judge where kihon plays a part in it. But when it comes to an actual fight, of course they don't put their guard low. You can see karate combat where many of the participants are WKF athletes. They don't put their hands low. Chinzo machida, a JKA affiliated karateka like his brother lyoto also does not put his guard down in the ring. But when it's point competitions, he does exactly like in the video. again, point scoring and actual fight have different approaches. Those who practice karate in a legit traditional dojo knows this at the least.

если бы я на спарринге был с такими низко опущенными руками, то по окончании боя меня мой сэмпай сам бы в нокаут отправил! вне зависимости от исхода основного боя If I had been in sparring with my hands hanging so low, then at the end of the fight my sempai (先輩) would have knocked me out himself! regardless of the outcome of the main battle

Not really. In Judo, sometimes we "sweep" medicine balls into the wall to practice the motion with power. Timing is the most important element though, and you need a partner to work on that.
@maofas
@maofas 4 жыл бұрын
Having practiced on a medicine ball, I say don't use a medicine ball, but instead a tire flat on its side. The medicine ball, in order to make good contact, will encourage you to sweep higher, but it's important to keep the sweep as low to the ground as possible. The other commentator was totally right timing is the most important element and you need a partner for that. Do some judo, it will help you a lot. Sweeping people in light karate stances is way easier than in Judo, a halfway decent sweep is enough often and less important than the timing.
