As a narcissistic abuse survivor who dreads asking people for help, this advice is gold. thank You

Yup, I hate asking for help. Having always been fiercely independent, I now have a couple of debilitating illnesses. My requests for help have been feeble and apologetic, and I hate being feeble and apologetic. Henceforth, I shall be upfront, direct and confident. 💪🏻

@@rubyseahorseuk I too had an issue asking for assistance. I was in the hospital for a week. I had driven myself to the hospital however when released, I could not drive because I was on pain meds. I called one of the ministers and asked if he could find someone who could take me to the grocery store on my way home and someone who could drive my car home. He showed up with two of my friends who took me to the store and home. I unlocked the door and as I stood and watched them bring in my groceries, I realized they were smiling and laughing. They were feeling good to have been of service. It also struck me that when I had been to proud to ask for assistance I had denied others the very thing that I enjoy....serving others. It changed my perspective. I am still independent yet when I need a hand, I ask knowing it will bring joy to those who truly care about me.

I have taken the word "help" out of my vocabulary. It is subtle yet it implies one person is better than another. I use the word " assist" for it implies partnership. ❤

My neighbor and friend offered to rebuild our water heater. I said we needed to share his experience and tools, so we can learn. Then we can show our other friends how to rebuild their water heater. In exchange, we are going to teach them how to Rumba Dance- so they can dance on their cruise vacations. This helpful advice is golden because it makes people feel VALUED when sharing their strengths, creativity and experience. THANK YOU Jefferson- for your experience, creativity and strength-improving communication and quality of life for those of us who want to learn. Your advice works for people in all life stages. 👍🤠🐞

I think you can combine things. I believe it's polite to ask someone, not just say "I need". You can phrase it like this " Will you help me with your creativity to come up with ideas for the meeting tomorrow?" Otherwise, to me, it feels like an order.
@SuzanneRobinette12 күн бұрын
I think most people respond well to “I need your advice” if said sincerely with a smile. But you could say “I’d like your advice” if you feel more comfortable with that. In any case, it needn’t be said as an order. I understand your point of view, but I’d be complemented if someone asked for my advice! It shows respect, humility, and a willingness to profit from another’s expertise, experience, etc.

Being only 5’2”, I hesitate to ask for help reaching something. I’m afraid a person might say no, or give me attitude about having to stop and help me. Even customer service people working at the grocery store have grumbled and had a bad attitude about having to get something off of a self for me.

As a short person, I ask taller people to "borrow their height" to reach something. I generally get a chuckle out of it.

Ok, Jeff, on this topic we may need more options. Why? Because these days people don t even look in each other's eyes😔!!! I fell to the ground in need of medical attention and nobody came close to see if I was dead or alive!!!!! Yes, this is the current atmosphere!!! So, please base Your suggestions on the current social status. The past is...way past!!! If you get my drift... Oh well....

That's a whole different situation! What to do in an emergency when you need help from strangers. There might be a video for that in Jefferson's archives, or in his book. I do believe that there are more good people out there that want to help...depending on the situation and environment. Sorry that happened in your medical emergency.
