When I got started into the family business of beekeeping,Grandpa had been passed 40 years before. Now a resident of North Kohala and my own father was ailing from Alzheimer’s, beekeeping was a perfect fit for our needs of providing home care for my folks, so rather then passing it on to some hospice, I opted to give my folks the benefit of being around their Grandchildren. I built our home next door and gave Dad my best for the next 13 years. Bees provided for our needs in more ways than just money, they kept us closer as a family as well.

I don’t know what the record is for the yield per hive per year but my hives in the Hawaiian Honey Forest of South Kohala ripped in 1560 pounds a year. But since this was Fast Crystallizing Kiawe Honey it needed to be harvested every 2 weeks, year round and those 20 hives brought in 1200 pounds each harvest.

Up north in Kohala, there were another 23 local honeys that our 200 hives across 40,000 acres and 7 bee yards worked. We sold are honeys at 17 stores and 2 farmers markets and didn’t need much storage, honey was simply harvested, bottled and was out to the market.

We also had a wide variety of fresh pollen from 10 hives that yielded 2 pounds daily. Color and scent and taste were wonderful.

Dr Ellis, a great deal of my wooden ware has been wax dipped. I am seeing after about 2-3 seasons due to heat mostly I think; the breakdown of the wax coating. I can't afford to re-dip due to the cost the equipment required. Do you have any suggestions on what to do or use to extend the life of these type of boxes?

The boxes should remain okay to use as long as the wax remains on them, even if only a little! You could also consider painting those boxes!

Beekeepers of your neighborhood are usually able to guide you toward becoming a beekeeper yourself. Find one and ask questions that your studying hasn't given you answers.

Back as the nation was under the woes of the great depression, my Grandfather started first with apples, it knowing he also needed honeybees. By talking to other local growers, their question to him was,’ what’s wrong with your bees?’ That led to my mother’s family surviving the depression after the upheaval of the economic depression.
