I have mine standing alone, and it hasn't toppled over yet. It depends on how much you fill it up (I have only 3-4 pairs of shoes), and if you small people in the house.

Tip for those who are having issues with the white plastic inserts... use a rubber mallet (not plastic) to get the tabs to snap into place.

The doors came open when I put some heavy loads. I Had use some magnet latch for the door to solve this. I think this design should think about the latch problem.
