Used this in rec play last night after watching the vid. Grandma didn't stand a chance! Quite a useful shot, seems to dive quickly right over the net and into the kitchen. If I follow it up with a put away between the opponents then we call it the "Banana Split" ! Thank you for sharing more of pickleball's dark arts with us.

Nice job Mark on explaining the shot. As a former table tennis player, I love it when I can apply a table tennis shot in Pickleball, especially now that pickleball racquets have gotten so much better and so much spinnier than they used to.

Interesting....in tt i have more of an old school bh flick instead of the more modern banana flick. But in tennis i have a 2hbh. I currently use my old school tt flick in pickleball because i feel like i can disguise it better when showing either slice or topsin dink. Ive been mostly working on my 2hbh to get a more consistent attack but do you have thoughts on whether going from traditional flick to banana flick might be a more worhwhile investment?
@ThePickleballPirates Жыл бұрын
This is a very effective shot and, if practiced, more reliable than other types of flick.

Just curious… Do you think Spoelstra should still be fired?

What type of grip would you use? Continental or Eastern? TIA.
@MarkNapartovich Жыл бұрын
Just checked. I switch to continental (automatically), but it goes with eastern without problem as well, maybe even better. Unlike table tennis you do not need to tilt the paddle forward during this shot.

Hi Mark, what paddle weight do you use? I'm wondering if my weight of 8.5 to 9 ounces is too heavy for this shot. It may stress my wrist. Any thoughts on this?
@MarkNapartovich Жыл бұрын
Definitely you want the lighter paddle when you use wrist a lot. But the balance is even more important. For example, I would not even try this shot with Joola Hyperion CFS. Head-light paddles are better for wrist action.

It just seems that with the paddle tilting down it would go into the net ?!?
@ThePickleballPirates Жыл бұрын
what do you mean by "paddle tilting down"?
@itmaslanka Жыл бұрын
At 1:20 in demonstrating the paddle is tilted away from him. I would think it would be tilted up a little? But in live play it’s hard to tell! My 72 year old body may not have the reaction speed to pull it off ! Thanks
@MarkNapartovich Жыл бұрын
@@itmaslanka correct, for that you need you legs to help. Without legs you need to open the paddle face more.

Is this the same as a back hand roll volley?
@ThePickleballPirates Жыл бұрын
Not exactly. You definitely can use it for volley too, although this shot allows you to attack quite low balls because of that side spin part.
@mlee9049 Жыл бұрын
@The Pickleball Pirates My understanding is that the backhand roll has a more horizontal ball path and less spin. This is due to the paddle 'not' being rotated all the way (elbow up). This shot is possible in the upper yellow zone. The banana flick has an arched ball path with more spin. This allows for lower balls to be hit. The arched ball path will allow the ball to clear the net. This shot is possible in the mid to low yellow zone. Is this correct?
@ThePickleballPirates Жыл бұрын
Correct
@HarveyJackson1967 Жыл бұрын
Doesn't this just pop the ball up?
@ThePickleballPirates Жыл бұрын
No, it is speed-up/attacking shot, can go low above the net. Notice though that technique details are important and the spin is crucial.

Why no shot/angle to see if the ball is in or out!!?? This doesn't work in Pickleball I'll bet you $$ on it. The ball doesn't "stick" to the paddle like it does in Table Tennis.. Most likely you'll FU$$ up your elbow trying this.. DON'T TRY THIS SHOT!!
