If you think you're lucky to get the last table at this restaurant, think again. Restaurants near these big tourist attractions will milk you for all you've got because they know you'll never come back anyways. Lesson learned, always ask for a menu.

my husband ordered food with prices listed. He asked for it to be put on different plates, instead of the food all on one plate, which is normally done at this type of restaurant. My husband just wanted to have a more family style meal. They charged him 3 portions each. Our meal ended up costing a weeks worth of groceries for a family of 5!! They thought we were foreign tourists, when in fact we are expats living locally. I've always seen the restaurant packed, so we decided to try it out. We will never spend another dime there and I'll be sure to leave a review. You never know who you are serving.

vidyaWolf Shitty food for WHAT price??? Did you see a price? No they didn't. If people are stupid enough to order food without seeing prices first...then there is no scam at a sleazy place like this. Only stupid stupid patrons. And as long as there as stupid people that can be taken advantage of...it will keep on going. When was the last time you ordered food without seeing prices first? Would you stay in a hotel without knowing the price? would you get your car repaired without knowing the price? Would you get work done at a dentist without knowing a price? If you answer yes to any of these...you have as much of a problem as the people that were taken advantage of in this video. Yes, the business is wrong for doing this...but if stupid people are willing to fall for it...it will continue to happen.

you're a dumbass then. You can see the cultural difference. You're probably from some western European country or from the US. I am from Romania and I have an advantage because of that: I'm as open minded as any western European, but I grew in in post-communist Romania, filled with thieves, scammers, and I grew up in poverty. :) I never buy anything, not even a water, without asking the price or looking on the menu. Every penny counts. If you don't have that in your blood you deserve to be scammed big time.

The Swiss guy warned them. To be fair, they did not get scammed. They never asked for a menu, nor asked how much since there were no menus. They never showed how the restaurant would react, had they asked for menus or pricing. They paid a high price for cheap food. Over priced is not a scam. Is a $10 hot dog at Yankee Stadium a scam? No. Tourist areas, sports venues.....you're gonna PAY. If you cannot afford the high price food, don't take an expensive European trip. Those things need to be factored into your budget. Bottom line-- There was no scam, and this is why they did not show how to 'avoid' a scam in this video.

I was scammed in a NYC restaurant. The bill added a $5 surcharge for two of us sharing a plate (even though it was huge and cost $25) plus charges for glasses of water, and a $5 a person surcharge for sitting on the patio. Then they added the mandatory 18% gratuity based on that. So in the end, a bill that should've been $55 was over $100. I said to them "bring me back the bill, minus the surcharges, and minus the mandatory gratuity, or I will make sure you can never take credit cards ever again."
@allytrudie864
@allytrudie864 Жыл бұрын
This isn’t a scam. It is like this in my Canadian city too. Heck, good luck finding a martini less than $25 here. A share charge is super common and a patio charge is also common in the summer when the patios are hot. Charging for a glass of water has also become super common. The world is expensive how did no one notice until now? I live in a tourist city and I pay out the ass for everything but it’s so worth it to not have to live in the boring suburbs and need a car.

How to avoid... you ask for a menu. Actually no one should have to tell you that anyway, it's just common sense to always ask a menu in a restaurant. In fact you normally don't even have to ask, they just give it to you right away. And what if they don't have one? Then what the hell are you still doing there, what restaurant doesn't have a frickking menu, thats just a huge sign to just get the hell out of there. This video is more about "how to get scammed" instead of "how to avoid getting "scammed"

How to avoid: Walk away from the tourist areas and walk toward the alleys and residential areas. In places like Rome that's only going to be a block or two away from any major tourist site. Those are the places that the locals go to that will be authentic and reasonably priced. Unfortunately many of the restaurants closest to the tourist spots get so many tourists each and every day that they don't have to have good service or good food. There will be tourists today and tomorrow and the day after that, so they will charge you more for mediocre food and mediocre service. In American cities, you kind of have a similar thing. Take Times Square in New York City. Virtually all the restaurants actually on Times Square are chain restaurants that you can find in virtually every city in the US. The only difference is the McDonalds or Dennys on Times Square is going to charge you a lot more money for the same food that you'd get in Springfield, Illinois. But it is Times Square. There are tourists today and there will be tourists tomorrow. But a couple blocks or so in any direction you can find reasonably priced local restaurants.

Forget the scam for a moment. Here the main issue is yourself drinking orange juice with cannelloni 😁 First rule of any restaurant/bar is to check first the menu and order what it is written in the menu. Also check the "coperto" charges (cover charges) for seating at the table.

In Rome (or Florence or Venice or any major Italian tourist city) 1) Never ever stop at a restaurant on one of the main streets. (eg Via Veneto). Walking 50 meters to a restaurant on a side street will automatically save you 40% or more. 2) Always check the menu _before you sit down_ (there is usually one posted by the entrance.) 3) Always check the bill. 4) Never show your wallet. 5) Never encourange the street musicians.

Did you know in some parts of the world, in my situations (3 trips to vietnam) plenty of restaurants will have 2 different menus? One for the natives and one for tourist? Both look identical but with different prices. Last time I went back there was more than 10 years ago so I'm unsure if they still do that. Best thing to do is ask the natives for their menu after they're ordered their food .

Clothes, meals, cab fare (pay first... if you trust the cabbie), whatever you want. Must be really annoying for the people living there, but hey, maybe they like it? Beats me!

+danny ho They do something similar in Cuba, but with their currency. There are two types of Peso, one that has actual value in the world economy, and another that's worthless and only used on the island. You'll sometimes pay in the one that has value, and they'll try to give you your change in the currency that's worthless.

They were not scammed. They ordered the food without looking at the prices. They willingly bought and payed for the food. They did so *without* knowing the prices. You cannot claim to have been scammed if you go into a situation completely ignorant of the prices. They should have asked for a menu, and then this wouldn't have happened. It's a terrible business practice, but the prices are something they agreed to as soon as they ordered and started eating.

How to avoid it? Never go into a restaurant without learning the *prices* *beforehand* or without having a look at the menu. In fact, never make *any* *purchase* without having at least a rough estimate of the cost of it. (Rough estimate means a inaccuracy not exceeding *10%* give or take at the utmost.) Boom. ;) PS: You should also avoid restaurants (or any business) with headhunters. Headhunters are people addressing passers-by.

Sadly this dosn't happen only in europe, here in my country(in east asia) ive been to a middle eastern hookah place, even when we have a menu n price for the food we ordered, we still get a big price then we calculated. When i asked for a break down on why its so much more expensive, the waiter brought in a paper where he scribbled items we've ordered and there was a few stuff we obviously did not order. We refused to pay till he minus from our bill. The same thing happen when i went to a indian restaurant, ordered, ate and end bill was bigger then expected. when asked for a price break down, the waiter could not explain the additional charges explaining that he must have made a calculation "mistake" I then found out from my other friends that they too have experienced same thing from other indian restaurants. So tip is to be smart and always ask for a menu or price of ur food before you order and to be double sure, check ur bill breakdown BEFORE you pay.U will never know what kinda of additional items they have charged u for :D i rather look like a cheapskate then lose my money haha
@bigmattman2005
@bigmattman2005 9 жыл бұрын
Nothing about that is being a cheapskate. The server/restaurant should feel like a pile of garbage for scamming someone by putting additional items on a bill, ESPECIALLY when confronted about it. Sadly, though, I'm sure they don't feel a thing and will continue their scam as long as they can, even scamming the next people immediately after being caught. It happens a lot of places, you just always have to be aware and there's nothing wrong with double-checking a receipt. It's similar to signing a contract. Do you really want to sign a contract that you haven't read? People do it all the time, and then are surprised by the outcome.

We went to Graceland many years ago. There was a local buffet. Sign reads "Buffet: $12". Fine. 8" plates, but we could make a few trips. Bill comes - it was over $50 a head. It was $12 per trip. The "per trip" was not on the big signs - but it was on a small sign by the door. Which was covered by a plant.

Is dine and dash worth “fine and more cash”? I’ve called cops before and they found them in less than an hour. They came back and paid and we decided not to press charges because they apologized. But if we had they would have had to pay their bill + court fees + the judges decision ($100s or jail time). It’s a crime and some restaurants make the servers foot the bill. And it was easy to find the woman on Facebook, yes, this was a grown woman with kids in high school. Her friends paid with credit cards so I looked them up on Facebook and looked through a dozen or so pictures before I found her. Believe me. I was not paying for her bill. And FYI, you would be amazed at how many cameras restaurants have. 15-20 years ago you could have gotten away with it but not anymore, thanks technology!

Watch out in Salzburg, in Austria too. There is at least one Japanese restaurant that lures you in with advertising outside (with pictures of the food) with cheap prices. When you go to pay, you realise you have been ripped off, as the extra's they give you, like soup starter that they say are part of the meal are charged for and you end up paying probably 6 times more than you expected. When you complain, they bring out the indoor menu and it is confirmed then that they have indeed ripped you off!!

Oh my gosh, I recently went on a three week trip to Europe and I witnessed this scam firsthand. I was with a friend in Paris and we had just finished visiting the Sacre Coeur Basilica and, since it was lunch time, we decided to grab something to eat in the quaint tourist-y shopping area that surrounds the church. She was craving some ice cream so we stopped at an ice cream vendor and she ordered an ice cream cone and a water bottle. Now, I don't remember the exact prices of the ice cream and the water bottle but I do remember that according to the menu that was posted on a wall next to the vendor the total price came out to be 6€. But when she gave the vendor 6€, he demanded 60€!! At first we thought he'd made a mistake so we were like, "Oh, you mean 6€?" And he was like, "No! 60€! 60€!" Since it was WAY too expensive she gave him back the ice cream cone and the water bottle. I mean, come on, 60€ for an ice cream cone and a water bottle?! SCAM!
