in germany we have a lot of breaders now who breed pugs with longer snouts and they actually can breath, run and play with other dogs etc. so if the breed is changed i would say: if people like them - keep the pugs. but let those with the flat faces go away. i don't care wether people find them beautifull (i do not but this is not relevant). the only criteria is that these dogs have problems with oxygen their whole life and this kind of breeding should not be allowed. it is uncivilized to create creatures who suffer their whole live for peoples unhealthy preferences.

@@ChiefHerzensCoachI agree, it’s cruel to breed any animal that you know is going to suffer its entire life unless it has multiple surgeries to even survive let alone have a great life. I think breeders of all the brachycephalic breeds should be selectively breeding for longer snouts, and breeds with excess skin should be bred to have less wrinkles as well. Animals shouldn’t live their entire existence in suffering because humans want them to look a certain way.

Hate on cattle dogs all you want, but they are super observant property watch dogs, and they take that job seriously. If a neighbor routinely walks down the sidewalk at 7am and one day he doesn't show -- I'm going to hear about it. If the regular UPS driver is out sick, his replacement will not go unnoticed. As a single female living on a farm with my corso, I totally think having a strong man with a deep voice would make a huge difference with my dog. He listens to me and we have an excellent relationship, but when he's acting a fool or won't get out of bed in the morning (seriously, what kind of dog doesn't want to get up, have breakfast and run through a flock of chickens?!), I imagine a guy yelling "hey" would make a bit more of a difference than when I do it.

I was chuckling a little bit when I listened to the first half of this because I own some of the bully breeds and others you guys mentioned. I own 12 dogs, and some are Boerboel, Presa Canario, English Bulldog, Bull Terrier, French Bulldog, Pitbull, American Bully, Alabai, and Turkish Boz Shepherd. I agree that one must have a certain type of demeanor to own these breeds. Cane Corso is one of my favorite breeds. What I have learned with all of these dogs breeds is that being physically strong is helpful but it is really your energy that must be bigger than the dog's. If you control the mind then you can control the individual. That's how I control my dogs. They think I'm crazy and so therefore fall in line because they don't want no smoke. It's honestly no different than controlling your kids except for the fact that dogs can't reason and their teeth and claws are designed to shred and tear. I agree with the list of the top 5 dogs people shouldn't own.

@@pittymama4500 the only disaster is a lack of knowledge. One must study the psychology of the species he or she wants to own. With each of the breeds of dogs I own and have listed, I have studied each breed, and what it was origin created for. You have the animal as a species, then as a breed, then as an individual. Maybe I should have used a better word than crazy. I have a strong personality, and am able to have dominion over animals naturally. It is just a natural ability that a supernatural God gave to me. The animals respect me, and in return I create a safe space for them that is full of structure and boundaries. The only disaster is if I dealt with them from a place of emotion and affection only. One must be calm but yet assertive with these breeds.
@ruru9400
@ruru9400 4 ай бұрын
@@pittymama4500 the dogs get along because for the most part, they are all laid back in temperament. The key to having a good pack is to find a mix between dominant and submissive animals and making sure all know that you're in charge. Secondly, making sure you have more calm animals than hyper will help the hyper ones learn to become calm. My Bull Terrier and Pitbulls have the highest energy in the house. But one would never know it because in public they are always lying down or sitting down, calmly observing their surroundings. Inside the home I don't allow them to run around. I encourage rest so they sleep all day. Outside we play tag, play with a tennis ball, and go to the dog park. They are allowed to let loose then. So it works for me.

I spent 2 hours on phone with breeder and 2 hours at pick up, before breeder would sell me RIOT. They made sure I knew what I was doing. 2 years later, wouldn't trade him for the world. His name is RIOT for a reason. If you own 1, you know. Homework is key before even thinking about getting a Malinois. If a breeder just hands you a Malinois and takes your money Run away. My first dog as an adult was an American bulldog. Got him at 12 weeks and he passed away 7 years later from hemangiosarcoma. I will never have a bond like I did with him. He was incredibly smart, respectful, funny and had a natural guardian instinct you can't teach. He played with all digs and corrected dogs that needed it and the confidence he had was infectious. A dog could be barking and lunging towards him and his reaction was so calm and cocky that it didn't even phase him. Now I have a female 50 lb pitty which is exactly half the weight my american bulldog was and she loves everyone and everything but she is overexcitable and hyper and much more difficult to train than my american bulldog was he would learn everything after 1 time showing him, he was so smart and would look back at you like yea I know that what else you want haha I miss him so much

What is a real Pit Bull: American Pit Bull Terriers (APBT) are the dogs that were bred in America (from their British ancestors) for dog fighting prior to 1976, when dog fighting became illegal. In the present day, the dogs that resemble their fighting ancestors the most (both physically and mentally) are registered in American Dog Breeders Association (ADBA) database under the name American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT). AKCs breed American Staffordshire (AmStaff) is 100% APBT, genetically. However, the AmStaffs were bred separately from the APBTs since 1930s as companion/showring dogs. So the AmStaffs are just show bloodlines of the APBT, renamed for political reasons. The number one characteristic of a real APBT is "gameness" - typically defined as the ability to not give up even when the odds appear to be against you. In the modern days, a good APBT breeder would test gameness of their breeding stock by hunting wild hogs with their dogs. Prior to 1976, gameness was tested by getting the dogs to fight in a "pit". What is NOT a Pit Bull: Any Pit-Bull-like dog that is heavier than 75lbs is a mix (or fat). A heavy set Pit-Bull-like dog that looks like it's on steroids is NOT a Pit Bull. Typically those are UKC registered American Bullies. Also, many Pit Bull historians claim that there are no grey/blue pure bred APBTs. But this is debated.

Just to add to the above: A real American Pit Bull Terrier looks like Bruce Lee, or an MMA fighter of the dog world - lean, light on it's feet, but with well developed musculature. Most males weigh under 60lbs.

My sister seemed a bit jelly cause every time I would come over after that, she would get super happy and do everything she could to get me to play with her. In her old age when she couldn't move very well and was on her way out, I could see in her eyes that she was sad that we couldn't play like we used to and she would just love that I would nestle up to her, pet her and gently slap at her paws and she'd get happy again and then she'd just press her head and body against me, smile and lick me. Dammit, now I'm all teary eyed reminiscing. I love visiting with huskies and I'm glad that there are people like yourself that are willing to endure all of the adversity of owning them. He is absolutely the most stable, trainable, self confident dog ever. He is functioning as a house and farm dog who not only protects me and my chickens, he discriminates. He demonstrates guarding behavior with strangers I don’t introduce him to. If I introduce them, he accepts them in a friendly manner. He runs off coyotes and raccoons but ignores deer and cattle. He knows the fence lines of the 80 acres he and I live on and never leaves it. Best dog ever!

It's getting better but the prey drive and anxiety causes one of them to run an entire field just to have a go at another dog. I rescued a malinois and you have to restructure your whole life to fit in activity and training to have the dog be calm in the evening and also looking towards you as the decision maker, because left to their own devices to make their own decisions you are going to run into serious problems. But it's also been super rewarding, getting out every day rain or shine and getting a lot of structure in your life is great, along with the training that is more fun with malinois than any other dog I've had (there is something about their absolute neurotic enthusiasm to execute the task), but you can't just go away somewhere without knowing you can leave the dog with someone who will be able to look after it

I will always live by my personal opinion that most dog breeds that are currently popular absolutely should not be owned. I can't tell you how many times I'm at the park (public park, no dog parks) with my GSD (And we never miss a day, rain or shine) and the breeds I see people have when they're out are almost never chill breeds, they're Collies, Huskies, Pitbulls, Terriers, Shepherds, etc, just breeds that are meant to do some serious activity, and all these people are doing is walking them. (Could they be taking them to parks or going hiking or fetch in the back yard, possibly, I won't lump them all into one category) but a walk is NOT going to cut it for these breeds! Or some people will legit walk up to the park with their border collie or labradoodle and then just tie them up to a pole while they go and play basketball as their dog sits and goes stir-crazy watching me and my dog play frisbee. That's like taking your kid to Disneyland and tying them up outside the amusement park while they watch all the other kids have fun! It's wild to me! They need at minimum of an hour of intense, outlet-releasing exercise a day. That doesn't mean every single one of them will become dangerous by any means if you don't do that, but you wonder why so many of these kinds of dogs are frustrated or "out of control". I've known people to own hounds and labs that "bother them" all day and the owners get frustrated and just say "Go lay down!"..... They're BORED out of their ever-loving skulls! I don't know whose bright idea it was to take field working and hunting type breeds and popularize them into suburban homes, but it is not working. If you can't exercise them and give them the outlets they seriously need every single day, do not get these dogs! It's so unfair to them.

I have an Airedale terrier, they’re pretty fun, kids love him. He’s about 120 pounds and goofy but his bark would keep anyone away, I’ve never heard a scarier dog bark. We had a husky years back. He was the smartest damn dog, so smart that when training him he just refused to train. It wasn’t because he didn’t catch on, you could just tell he didn’t give a sh*t about training. He would act tired and lazy around the house and walk slow, just waiting for the perfect moment he could rush out the door and run. Zero recall, but he always came home. He was the most gentle dog too, eating food from your hand like a sloth. Refused to come in during winter, preferred sleeping outside in snow. If you have the space and don’t care about really training them, they’re hilarious dogs to own. Had a jack Russell terrier too, he was such a crazy fella but he wanted nothing but to play fetch. Had to train away his food aggression but he was very smart and caught on. Great recall as well. Highly recommended if you have high energy kids.

To the Patrick guy. Our 13.5 yo GSD was a submissive peeing dog. We had people meet her outside. If the person had to come in the house, we’d have them completely ignore her until she got over the “need” to pee. If it was the dog walker, we would have her come in, ignore the dog, wait for the dog to walk away out of disinterest. Then she could clip the leash on as long as she didn’t seem excited. Once she knew the she couldn’t go for a walk until the leash was on and she wasn’t excited the peeing stopped.

I always appreciate your honest discussion of breeds! Anyone who claims that it’s all about the individual dog and you can’t make generalizations about breeds just hasn’t interacted with enough dogs to see the patterns and commonalities that are indeed present. I own/operate a dog walking and petsitting business, I’ve worked with about 1,000 dogs at this point. I see the problem behaviors (and other character/behavior/temperament traits) that are virtually non-existent in some breeds, yet are highly likely to appear in other breeds. Of course there are always some exceptions, but they are rare exceptions.

the french bulldog bloodline is really shifted since 2006 in not only body standards, but genetic temperament. Blue expressions have the most tendency to have aggression/temperment issues. Merles is the next variation that is trending in that same direction as blues. This is due to a increase in backyard breeding or new breeders that want to capitalize on the increase value of the breed and do not do their due diligence understanding genetics. Joel is 100% correct, you MUST know the breeder and the bloodline of a potential french bulldog. Without this research, new owners may find themselves with a tasmanian devil that is beyond their capacity. This knowledge comes from training french bulldogs for 18 years and working/meeting 100s of french bulldogs all over North America.

Years ago people across the street from us had Chow Chow puppies...we got one...did not know anything about this breed except that the puppies were so cute. So first book I read about Chows "If you are thinking of getting this breed, don't" I was like what did we just do? Worked with her right away with her training...self trained her. You could not have asked for a better dog. Obedient, good when our kids came along, not aggressive, but would be watchful of strangers. Everything a Chow should be. My husband wanted another when she passed, but by then I had read to many horror stories of them turning on owners ect, so I said no go. If I could have another dog just like her I would in a minute. Dogs and food aggression, since most of the time I have started out with puppies I would hand feed them, I would play in their food dish while they were eating...and I have never had any problems, taking a toy with a drop it command...all started as puppies. I'm sure would have to tweek this a bit if starting with an adult dog.

They kept him outdoors on a lead. He didn't bite, but he did push people away from him. I haven't really met many chows at all, but from what I hear, they all seem to have similar traits. You've stated a couple of times, in reference to Pitbull people going ballistic when there's talk about banning breeds, that you would go: "That's too bad. I'm going to get a Rottweiler." So my question is, if there is a reason, why do you go for Doberman over Rottweiler as a helper dog? I guess a well raised Doberman is a perfect dog for how you use it: proud, confident, and generally doesn't take $#!@ from others. But the same is true for many breeds, including Rottweiler(?). Would you ever consider getting a European Doberman?

He knows I don't demand it from her. German Shepherds NEED rules and structure. Females German Shepherd need it more so than males. The German Shepherd was purposely created to need and to take direction from a handler. They're a high drive breed for a reason and you're not going to fix that. The trick seems to be researching for a good breeder, and then teaching your German Shepherd when it's APPROPRIATE to be crazy and when to settle their ass down from day one.

I grabbed my leash and put it on him to guide him back to her to explain the situation. The first thing he tried (I was ready) was to pull me I pulled back hard (we are about the same weight and I am female) that dogs front legs came up off the ground and he turned and looked at me and decided not to try it again.

Australian Cattle Dogs are extremely intelligent, loyal, and stubborn dogs. I’ve had two and one of them lived to 16 years old and was in peak condition right up until her last year when her health declined rapidly, this is extremely common with the breed. They need an owner who is active and who will be a “boss” owner, I wouldn’t recommend them to anyone with small children though because their prey drive is extremely high and easily triggered by excited kiddos. In regards to the world being a dumpster fire: now is seriously the time to learn how to defend yourself as well as get a personal protection dog. On December 22, 2024 I was attacked by my mum’s neighbour and when mum came out to help she also got attacked. My mum is legally blind, completely blind in one eye and has about 5-10% vision in the other and he took advantage of that by jumping up off the ground and “king” hitting her to the blind eye. Her head hit the ground hard and while she was on the ground he stomped on her chest, breaking three ribs, these breaks were only found because they caused her to have a heart attack about four weeks ago. He’s nothing but a POS coward. I have my own injuries from it and have been told that if I hit the ground again I’ll likely be paralyzed as I have spinal damage from top to bottom. The damage in my neck wasn’t there when I had a CT done about a year and a half ago but the doctor can’t say for sure if it was caused by the attack. On top of all this, the neighbour’s wife has a daughter who works in police forensics and has had her “fix” things for him. Unfortunately we don’t have proof of that but we do have footage and audio from the night. I’m lucky that Western Australia is the only state where you can carry and use pepper spray so I now carry it on my person as well as having a backup in my car door. All of this is why I haven’t been around much for the past few months, I still watch most of your videos and podcasts but don’t have the energy to interact much. The two of you and The Pod have been a great distraction and I’m grateful to be a part of this community 🫶🏼

My parents have always had JRT’s, they are fantastic farm dogs and can be very sweet and gentle when given the opportunity to work the land. We have over 20 acres for them to roam, mouse, rat etc. Our female used to want to chew through old cedar fence posts to find what she was after. We had to be careful there was no wire, because she would try to rip that apart too. That same female would focus all her energy on herding a soccer ball, and she would chase that ball till she dropped if we let her. Really loved this episode, I have always wanted a Jack Russell of my own. I will wait until I have my own farm and have the time to put into a dog. I don’t think I have enough experience with LGDs, or other large guardian breeds to try as my first dog. I know I need more training experience. Are they any resources for people without dogs to get into a training environment?

Watch all of Beckman's videos... Maybe work at doggie day care facilities or volunteer at shelters... They love people who love dogs... Giving the sweet gentle ones at the shelter extra cuddles...and as you learn more by practicing & handling, you can start walking dogs as a side-gig. The more dogs you handle, the more you will be ready for your dream JRT to come into your life! Just like your favorite breed, never give up!

Huskies definitely not for everyone. Can be a great dog if you understand them. Intelligent as a collie, but doesn’t give a crap about pleasing the owner. You have to earn their respect, and they get into a ton of mischief if you don’t keep them mentally/physically stimulated. I’ve had both. Ironically, mixes of the two seem to be great, level dogs.

@@skyblue-lb9kr Really? My current collie/husky mix has a problem with snow balling up on the paws, a problem the collies all had, and the husky and husky/malamute crosses didn’t. Can’t imagine a mix like her pulling a sled when she stops every 5 minutes on an unpacked trail to chew the snow off.

My list: 5. GSD 4. Jack Russel Terrier 3. Border Collie 2. Pitbull type breed 1. Belgian Malinois personally, I know lots of lovely frenchies . I would never recommend a pug to anyone because of the health issues. Cavaliers can have brain/skull health issues as well so despite lovely temperaments, I don't encourage their breeding either. my top pet dogs: 1. beagle 2. golden retriever 3. lab 4. bichon 5. shih tzu I tend to recommend small/medium sized breeds for inactive or inexperienced dog owners. Also, its odd to me that Joel never mentions sport dogs or talks about dogs in competition. I think a truly good trainer can prove it in a ring.

It shouldn't be odd to you if you know much of anything about Joel. His niche is identifying the cause of unwanted behavior and correcting/ fixing that behavior. Sports dogs are likely not talked about much because not only are they very well trained, but are also bred from prize dogs having a genetic advantage to be trainable. Very few (if any) need correction from unwanted behavior.

@@underduress5761 What I am saying though is that his answer for "Who should own a border collie?" should include "sport people." It's like he only realizes pet dogs exist because he is constantly talking down to the audience, some of whom train their dogs incessantly.

@@catschleicher3484 OH, okay. That makes sense in the context of never in his list here and not never ever ever lol I don't know how much thought he put into his list, but you have a point. I would suggest that he might not have thought about that, as he likely doesn't deal with those kind of owners in his field. I saw this as him basically mixing and matching dogs with people that are considering getting one as a pet for the reasons most people get pets and sporting show animals wouldn't even be in the mix

crazy clown world makes me glad, as a single lady, I got a german shepherd (male) instead of another lab. So agree with Joel's list especially after adopting my late friend's malinios. You just cant ever relax, small animals, other dogs, visitors- anything can trigger and then things can get real bad real fast, despite all the walks and training. I do like the idea of breeding in a little GSD to help the GSDs be more healthy, and the malinois be less crazy and neurotic.

We have a SharPei mix foster dog that has just landed in our laps. He is small but mighty (both in muscle and in dominance) and he automatically walked better on lead with my husband who is much heavier and stronger than I am. I am more of a mentally dominant leader in regards to training than my husband but this doggy could feel the difference in weight and adjusted naturally. I admit, I was offended initially! I am a strong strong woman, but I am not a man, sooo... 🤣

Pomeranians are awesome. Big dogs in little bodies. King Charles Spaniels are so sweet but lower energy. Most doodles I’ve encountered are sketchy but it’s more the type of person who gets them that is the issue. My experience only. Ask groomers about them. I love Shar Peis. Great if they are healthy. Similar to Akita personality but smaller package. Super clean and they housetrain themselves.

I have an American bulldog mix, but she is small compared to Jax and Jemma. Got her from the shelter and I love her, so sweet. Not the smartest but wants to please. Yes she can be stubborn but I have a dominant personality and I follow through. She can be unpredictable, jumping on or off stuff. Probably would not start over with a dog like her if I was elderly, if she is too excited she would prob knock me down.
