@weedhigh256410 ай бұрын
well in the dog training community trainers often will frown upon trainers that think they got it all figured out and know it all, its usually a sign of the trainer beeing a newbie and quite inexperienced as he never got humbled yet... trust me, when you get your first humbling by a dog never again will you walk in a room and think you know everything, it seems to be quite a necessary experience for the growth of a trainer and you better get used to that because you will get dogs that will humble you every session you will have with them and really put your mettle as a dog trainer to the ultimate test, after your first dog like that it seems to me like you learn how to be quiet and listen and also understand better what you hear. I used to be that guy, smartest in the room, know it all and so on, untill i had my moment of humbling. After that moment i learned how to be quiet and listen and absorb information in a way i could understand and tap into in the future and my game leveled up big time because of that. Now there is no more fake confidence and loud mouth, now there is real confidence, understanding and a closed mouth

Garrett talking about the Corsos made me think about people asking me if they should get a horse. They would ride my well behaved and well trained horses and say how they wanted a horse. I would be very upfront and honest about how much time, money, and potential danger goes into horses and why they shouldn't get one. It's so crazy how people want what they shouldn't have.

We need an alliance between all the great balanced dog trainers on youtube to combat the force free bull****. Even if you think slightly different, I think this podcast is a huge step in the right direction! Thank you! I suggest you invite Andy Krueger and Tom Davies!

“99% of people should not have a Corso” that’s how I feel about my favorite breed the Great Pyrenees and I’m so afraid it’s getting popular.
@cg54715 ай бұрын
Not being rude, genuinely asking why? They have a good reputation other than needing space to roam.
@OffGridDogs5 ай бұрын
@@cg5471 not at all, good question. Unfortunately the answer is quite sad. Truth is most people (in America) shouldn’t have any dog at all. At least 70-80% of dog owners do a very poor job of meeting their dogs needs many not even knowing what those needs are particularly the leadership aspect. Many end up with very badly behaved dogs but get away with it and just keep the dog anyway and put up with the behavior problems because with smaller dogs nobody gets killed or seriously injured. With a 140 pound LGD like mine or a 120 pound corso that’s a recipe for disaster. A lot of the blame is on “The Pet Industrial Complex” that misleads dog owners for profit. I go into more detail on my KZbin channel.

For us “new” dog owners that are OCD, or really wanting to get as much knowledge ASAP we appreciate so, so much all the free content all of you guys/gals produce. I got my then 8 week GS into local star puppy training the second I got him, and this week, today in fact I’ll be starting a private scent and obedience sessions. He’s 21 weeks now, learning fast and well, I’m sure, absolutely positive that I’m the only thing holding back his progress. Thanks for helping all of us!
@weedhigh256410 ай бұрын
i tought the same thing too with my younger dog, i felt like i was somehow holding her back or rather i was sick and felt like my beeing sick for a long time (i had a stretch of about half a year where my health just wasnt there, i'd catch colds left and right, got the covid somehow after the whole pandemic was over, twisted my ankle and my back started to act up towards the end because i spent most of my time either in bed or on the couch chilling) was holding back her training so when i was finally ok and she was now about 14 months i got depressed because in my eyes the dog did not progress in that time so the first few days i was good i would not train with her even tho i could and she wanted to, but my depression just wouldnt let me, i'd just take my dogs for walks and that was it for the first few days. Around day 4 i got my confidence back and i started to train and not only she did not forget one thing from before, there were commands that before she was iffy at best on performing that now she was performing perfectly in a controlled environment, so i wanted to see how the distractions are now, as she is a rottie mix she has that rottie whimsy and we can be hard into training but a random butterfly comes by and off she goes, and she improved big time in that as well, now when training she is mostly all in and when she is not its me thats doing something wrong. What im trying to get at in my roundabout way is, dont worry about it, you are not failing your dog, he will still learn everything you want him to and more, just be there for them and provide leadership and structure and everything else should fall into place by itself if you keep up your training and be the best owner you can for your dog.

The problem with e-collars for me is if the owners dont know how to train a dog, they sure as hell dont know how to use an e-collar.
@OffGridDogs10 ай бұрын
You are absolutely correct but I’m certain more damage is done by owners simply not walking their dogs by 100x than all the damage done by poor use of ecollars though that is unfortunately too common.

I can't believe my two favorite dog trainers are on the same podcast ! This is great, guys ! Something you said, that struck me, as a civilian dog owner, you mentioned how much the owners suffer , often in silence, self-blaming, feeling like a failure, real anguish, with a dog that is behaviorally out of control. I have gone thru this for the last couple years, with my dog....long story which I won't go into, but yes, the suffering is real...you don't know if you are going to be able to get the dog where he needs to be, to find the right kind of help....I have even worried that if something happened to me, what would happen to HIM, with his problems. Its taken a village, we have had some progress, but this is the first time, someone has acknowledged what the owners go thru emotionally, during this time.

I enjoy seeing the love between 2 experts in their respective fields. Tons of trainers would take exception to not being placed on the top of a rankings list yet Garret realized it's only because he doesn't have a helper dog. It had nothing to do with him or his training style. These guys combined with Dog Daddy are the only trainers I watch because they practice what they preach and show results. There needs to be more crossover like this regardless of what their training philosophy is. Zak George needs to talk to a shrink and learn how to deal with people that have opposite outlooks on training and come onto this podcast for a civil conversation without any tension or need to argue.

Nice to see Mr Wing on the show. My sister sent me a link to one of his videos and I love the instruction because I had a gsd x using similar tools and training. Beckman's training I have used for my two rescues because I needed a refresher. I have no issues with e collar or prongs when used correctly how I trained my gsdx e collar. These two rescues are soft dogs so a slip lead, go get, and the basics were used Beckman style. Having Kaylee our gsdx who was more Mal than anything was a true dominant girl and I thank Lou Castle who taught me how to train with the e collar.My rescues no tools and a year later i have two calm happy well behaved dogs. Tools are great when used correctly and Mr. Wing does it the right way! I think both of you do wonderful work and help dogs and owners in different ways but the end result is what matters. Keep it up!❤❤❤

Still in the first few minutes but I’m eager to hear y’all’s conversation around training tools… Knowing Joel sees E collars and prongs as more commonly counterproductive, where Garrett has great success with them… and I JUST saw his clip on Facebook condemning gentle leaders.. which is one of maybe two training accessories Joel promotes in some cases.
