Ok, gotta add my 2 cents here. I have two of these. First of, STP is hype, like Fram filters, all hype... use Lucas fuel system cleaner, it does it all, not injector cleaner, use the fuel system cleaner...Lucas. Ok, rod bearings Yes, warm it up correctly [it's vital]. I believe with all my heart, if there were a problem with the material in the bearings BMW would have fixed it...there isn't. Proper warm up, use the correct oil, 10w60 only, not 10/40, 20/50...no. I know the 10/60 is pricey, but what many don't know is the 10w60 is vital for the vanos system, the high pressure line internally and lubrication...I could go on, but.......................

@@nenadradmanovic9383 I don't doubt that some get away with it. My wife's Jeep says 5w20, but I know I can get away with using another weight, just like you can go from synthetic oil to conventional oil, and might get away with it. You do your thing, I will stick to what BMW motorsport and every respected shop has told me with the three E60 M5's I have owned since 2010
@Bimmer_Bill
@Bimmer_Bill 2 жыл бұрын
The foremost s85 engine builder in likely the world recommends redline 5w/50. The vanos system is dependent on oil flow which is affected by pressure. Fact is a thinner oil flows more. Here’s some fluid dynamics equation for you…Flow = pressure/resistance. Resistance = line length x viscosity/ line diameter cubed. So, if resistance is greater due to viscosity (given all variables are the same), the higher viscosity oil will not flow faster than a lower viscosity. The question becomes what’s the oil pressure with lower viscosity oils and do they offer adequate wear resistance? If oil pressure is good, then flow will actually be improved and the vanos system will not be compromised. I use a racing specific full synthetic 0w-50 oil because of the much greater amounts of wear additives than standard synthetics. The problem is dual, the extra additives will eventually foul catalytic converters (my cats were removed) and less detergents meaning more sludging over time, so I change the oil at 2-2.5k to keep the engine clean.

Hello M Tech Guy, I actually just replaced all injectors on my M5 as maintenance while rebuilding the throttle valve actuators. My NEW biggest concern is the lines from the tank and even the fuel rail. No filter and degradation of the fuel feed system could compromise even NEW injectors! PS: Have many engines....2 full, plus 2 short blocks....plus car. Purchased engines before car to learn. Two engines clearly hydro locked with bend rods and bores scored so badly, they could not be re-finished in Alusil at 0.2mm over......GRRR! Have you added a fuel filter yet? Interested in near OEM install for filter near rail to minimize potential of clogged/open injector. Cheers, P-Chi

You must remember though that Cal/Ariz/Nev 91 is terrible compared to actual 91 elsewhere. I'd recommend adding VP Octanium Unleaded every few tanks if you rip on the car hard often. It'll kill multiple birds with one stone. Fuel injector cleaner and octane booster and it's still safe on factory o2 and cats.

@@mattb6595 Hello Matt B, Very interested in why I cannot use over 100 RON? I am not a chemist, but my understanding is that the higher RON actually reduces the flash point of fuel to avoid knocking or pre-detination of the fuel/air when compressed. It does not, by itself, offer higher performance. This is very important for high compression and turbo cars, but not does not add performance if not needed, but could actually reduce performance on low compression engines. At over 100 could the engine not have a clean fast burn in the cylinder with spark ignition? Please advise, P-Chi

Easy way to avoid rod bearing issues , use a thinner oil. 10w60 was just a boneheaded move by BMW. I understand why they chose it , but somehow they overlooked the most basic clearance vs. viscosity fundamentals in pursuit of slightly more protection elsewhere. S65 and S85 have tight rod bearing clearances ideal for a 30wt or 40wt max.
@MTechGuy
@MTechGuy 5 жыл бұрын
Hear a few guys out there do this. Many things to consider with regards to oil viscosity choice- climate the car is used in, VANOS system that operates at 8000kpa, how the oil holds up at 8k+ rpm, additive package, oil choice available in owners country etc.etc. I use 10w60 myself here in NZ, regular changes, proper warm ups. Each to their own though 👍

@@MTechGuy Top fuel dragsters that make 10,000hp are the most violent motors with serious flexing and vibration stress happening. And they run 70wt, which is the thickest of any engine I'm aware of. Formula 1 and Nascar both use the equivalent of 0w10 to 0w15. But they are proprietary formulas. The average road-going car runs 5w30. So , from these angles as well , 60 doesn't make sense.
