A friend of mine had his Tacoma stolen from his driveway during the night. Two days later, 2 individuals that purchased the truck at a swap meet tried to license the truck at the Nevada DMV with a fake title. The fake title supplied to the 2 buyers by the thief or seller, was sufficient enough in quality that the only way the DMV figured out that there was something amiss was there was still an outstanding balance or lien by the bank on the loan on the Tacoma - luckily my friend had not totally paid off the truck. In theory, if there was no lien on the vehicle title then the DMV would have probably accepted the fake title and licensed the vehicle. On a side note, the victims that were scammed out of the purchase price of the vehicle asked my friend in front of the cops while returning the truck, would my friend be willing to give them half of what they had paid for the stolen truck or $4,700.00 . When this request for money was translated so that my friend could understand exactly what the victims were asking, he was astonished to say the least. Probably not a good idea to purchase a vehicle at a swap meet either.

Three years ago I sold my old car on Craigslist. The buyer inspected the car. Signed a bill of sale "as is" and "Inspected by buyer prior to sale", He paid cash and we all went to the DMV together to have him pay the tax and pay to get a new title processed on the spot. My motto? TRUST NO ONE.

@HH James - same thing. I sold my Nissan 350 Z on Craigslist. His bank cut me the check and I didn’t leave until we left the DMV together with HIS new title and registration in hand.

A friend of mine was wanting to buy a car off of Craigslist. He says it was a 1969 Mustang for $1100. The picture looked convincing. I told him $1100 was a little low for a car like that. I asked him to contact the seller and see what was wrong with it. The seller assured my friend that there was nothing wrong and that it was exactly as the picture showed. So he paid $1100 plus $500 to ship it. He paid with a Wal Mart Moneygram as the seller said that's all he would accept. 11 days later he gets a 1969 HOT WHEELS Mustang delivered. When he went to the cops they said there was nothing that could be done. Please NEVER buy a car unseen

I bought a car on eBay (actually won the auction). The seller wanted a down payment within 48 hours. I told him that he has to take the car to the local dealership for an inspection. There were 2 Chevy dealerships in his town, so I said he can pick whichever he wants and I will arrange the appointment and pay for the inspection. He was quite angry at me, but agreed and did it. The car was fine, and after that scenario and me telling him when I am flying in to get the car, he did not want the down payment anymore; told me to just pay him when I see him.

I woke up in the middle of the night and wondered why is it that when I have called on MH's for sale on Craigslist the people selling are always selling it for a relative, the sellers call me back but have have restricted numbers. I decided one of the first things I would do this morning is go to KZbin to see if I could get my question answered. Thank you Steve---You have saved me grief.

Years ago a ( early internet) a friend of mine had a Mustang. He put it up for sale in a local car seller mag. Within a couple of days he got a call from another company. The seller claimed to be a Shiek who collected Mustangs and did not have this year and model. He said he will handle shipping. Within days a wire transfer showed up in his bank for the amount. By the end of the week a closed carrier was picking the car up.

I have had the money order scam on items I was selling, as low as $20. OTOH, I was giving away a very old printer and got contacted by someone 1000 miles away, who offered to pay me to ship it to them. They sent it through Paypal, it was good, I shipped it, we were both happy.

Another great vid. While I was waiting for the paperwork to clear for a new house purchase, I was living in apartment that only offered to renew my lease for one year. So, I used CL to find short term (month to month) or to back-fill the last few months for an apt where the current tenant needed to break lease early. That section is heavily filled with scammers asking for the security deposit and/or one months rent upfront and refusing a walk through first (as they are always out of town and they don't want to disturb the current, exiting tenant). At least three out of every five listings were scams like this. Thankfully craigslist did have a disclaimer on the first page with a "be on the lookout" for this type of scam.

This lady from out of town brought a house from the real estate office. The sale was good and everything, but before she got to town another woman had broken in the empty house, changed the locks and was living there rent free. 2nd Woman had the utilities turned on in her name and everything. It took the woman who actually brought the house a long time to get the 2nd woman out. She had to evict her, and once the courts told the 2nd woman to move, they actually gave her another 30 days. So the owner had to file eviction notices, wait until the court heard the case, and then the other woman still got an extra 30 days on top of that. I believe the buyer of the house should have gotten part of her money back from the people that sold the house.

I know this is an old video but Id like to contribute and say, as a car flipper and friends who do the same, we dont look for smart buyers. We advertise we know nothing about the car, and usually we always find someone who doesnt care. Wed never lie, because its not profitable to do so with someone who is genuinely smart and looking for a good car. The people who take up our flipped cars are generally too busy tripping over their wallets to care. Maybe thats us or where we live...

Curbstoning is the norm in the Phoenix area. Just went through the process of buying a used car and was appalled by the amount of people telling me that the car was in their name, only to find out the name on the title was from a dealer. A couple of them told me that they were selling the cars for their cousin. I walked away everytime. In Arizona you don't pay sales tax on used cars if you buy it from a individual. If it's from a dealer you pay it. I had to really filter my options after being frustrated by people lying to me. I found that if you can see a photo of the vehicle in the opened garage at a residence it's probably genuine. I found one of those and got my car but I had to do my homework.

For some states the title has a place for the seller to fill in the buyers name at time of sale. I always fill it in and take a picture of it to prove I did it, I also take a picture of the buyers drivers license. Only once had a person not want me to take a picture of their drivers license, personally I would not want some one to take a picture of mine but it has made selling cars as safe as I can without going to the DMV with them to transfer the title and that would be a 2 hour drive on most days.

This is something that happens a lot too, It happened to me but the guy said it was his car several times, But when i seen the title it wasn't in his name and then he said he was helping out his aunt, I looked at it and looked at him and now he looked uneasy, i told him i forgot my money at home and i left! My cousin was with me and when we were leaving said i thought i seen you put it in your pocket, I said i don't know what it was but something isn't right with this, i don't know what, But i'm not coming back!

Another thing to remember people: If your selling your car and a buyer comes and buys it, Always ALWAYS make sure you instantly file a "Release of Ownership" with your local DMV. This is very important !! Reason: It the buyer (even a good person) does not title the car in their name right away, and ends up wrecking it, or even killing someone, your name is still going to be on the DMV list as the Owner of the car. So guess who the police are going to be looking for? YOU !! Always make sure you get the buyers name, address, and drivers license number! Put all that information on the "Release of Ownership" you file with the DMV. And never wait a few days to file, do it ASAP !

I always remember the saying, "if it sounds to good to be true it probably is ", I was selling my 63 Cadillac Eldo convertible, on Craig's list, some guy emailed me , I want your car, I will pay your asking price plus shipping, I'm thinking, this guy isn't even asking me any questions about my car?, and he wants to pay full price plus shipping?, hhhmm, something isn't right here, he was going to send me a cashiers check, this was a long time ago before I ever heard of the cashiers check scam, I called a bank and they told me and they clued me in, boy I'm glad I didn't trust this person. Oh and I had my car sitting alongside my body shop, in the daytime and it was stolen 6 months later and never found, I had 2 gallons of custom mixed red paint in the trunk, 😆

I was shopping for a house, saw the photos and sent my agent there to look it over, (With my Brother-in-law). The photos were taken 6 years before, they had rented or tried to sell this house to a family of 35 dogs, that wrecked it. Our agent said it might take $20k in repairs, but Bro said more like $30k. Skipped it; she just wanted her check, it didn't matter what condition these houses were in.

Here’s a story I got from a friend who is a lawyer: He defended a guy charged with writing bad checks. At the conclusion of the case, the client pays my friend with a check. The next morning my friend went to his client’s bank and presented the check for payment, and they cashed it. A few hours later he gets a call from the bank explaining that the check bounced and would he please return the cash. He explained that he has no contractural arrangement with the bank and presented the check in good faith, so the matter is between the bank and their own client, who also happens to be my friend’s former client. He did not hear further from the bank.

I had an incident with a scammer on something I was selling that was based on the money order scam where they sent me more money than the asking price. I had them send me the MO and told them i had to wait for it to clear the bank. Of course i never deposited it. After a couple of weeks the scammer started bugging me and i told him I spent the money because I had an emergency and they'd have to wait..Really pissed them off.

A few years ago, I was selling some tools/equipment. One Item was a Spartan jr, Heavy duty convertible hand truck. I included a couple of pictures, put $125 or BO. I think I got about 10 offers for thousands of dollars, they really want to buy this car, they send me a cashiers check today and arrange for pick up when I deposit the cashiers check. I thought it was funny, I replied to one and said you do know this is a hand truck, it is not a car? He replied that makes it even more valuable, I will double my offer. I guess a convertible truck would be pretty valuable. I know why people would fall for this, we see it all the time, it is just sad. Someone down on their luck, gets this great offer, thinks their prayers are answered, and sadly get screwed over.

Here’s a related scam. Several years ago I replied to a CL job ad. The guy said via return email he and his wife were looking to hire a chauffeur to drive them around the local area since they were interested in relocating here from Australia. He would send a money order for 8K and I could take out 2K for my 2 weeks pay in advance and use the balance to rent a top of the line Mercedes through his “business associate” in a nearby town. What a generous and apparently wealthy couple!. BEWARE!! Weasels abound!

Anyway, before allowing the car to be picked up I wanted to be sure the check was good. I called the bank it was drawn on in Ohio and they refused to tell me anything, even if the check was legit from their bank. ???? I asked the snooty girl at the bank to speak to the head cashier. I'm just the opposite. I'd never buy a vehicle from a private party & will only buy a vehicle from a major dealership with a car that's still under it's factory warranty. Why? Because any major dealer, Ford, BMW, Toyota, Honda etc. will only keep used cars on their lots that are in perfect running condition, otherwise they're wholesaled to an auction. Do you think a private party is going to tell you if anything is wrong with the car? There are other sites I use & typically avoid CL, however many dealers to advertise on CL.

Hope you have a lot of money. All dealerships build those wonderful buildings with your money. 80% of the cars on a dealers lot are bought at an auction. They have no clue of the history or condition of these cars. Most started as rental cars. Have you ever seen how people treat rental cars. Yes dealers can make some stuff right because they overcharged you by thousands.

At least in my state (Pa) the best way to protect yourself is to go with the seller to a place that transfers titles (AAA does not charge any fees for members to transfer titles) and do all the paper work to have the title transferred into your name BEFORE any money changes hands.

@@edermitt... Any idea Who signs for an esate owned vehicle? Like if the kids don't want to wait for probate? They kids may just sign the deceased persons name and no one is the wiser?

Compared to the seller of a Porsche via Craigslist a few years back in my town, these are petty. He was shot and killed in broad daylight by morons who took his car, of course getting caught soon after, but hey, he's the dead one. Civilization is tottering, when a culture of crime expends more time and energy on lawbreaking, than they might making better honest money. The old days of bargains are gone; it's about security now. For transportable items, arrange to meet in a public lot for sale negotiating, ideally even local police stations. If you place an ad, filter via the Craigslist response first, getting a valid contact phone, full name, before you divulge any of your info, especially your address or full name. Cash only, ever, period, and get a counterfeit checking pen. All meetings in daytime, with a friend if possible. Make clear all sales are final; be legal, do a bill of sale, get buyer's name, address, look at their ID. You do not deliver; you do not meet at their place; you do not let anyone change terms, you never sell on any time crunch, because you are controlling the sale. If anything looks hinkey, bail, politely, but back away. Signs of honest buyers might be questions about item's dimensions, features, age, warranty, prior repairs, power consumption, noise, etc. Warnings: Instant agreement to pay your price, buying unseen, paying more to lock sale, more interested in some quirky monetary deal than with the item itself, demanding your name, address first (telling them exactly where your sale item is, along with clues to your age, relatives, income, potential for burglary, etc.). If possible, take and transmit photos/videos to a friend, showing persons and vehicles showing up, match against info provided before - ex: will be picking the microwave up in a red F150, license xxxxx. Honest folks have no issues with you being cautious. On buying, the same rules hold, but personally I'd never take more than $300-400 cash to a Craigslist exchange, unless at a police station. Fake ads to lure cash buyers to remote addresses abound.

Craigslist sales and purchases must always be local and for cash. No exceptions. If the item being bought or sold is worth enough (usually a car), then it is worth it for you to travel to the item to buy it or for the buyer to come to you. Conduct the transaction at your bank or the seller's bank. Cash in both cases, no matter the cost - these won't be 6-figure transactions if you are dealing on a free ad site, after all.
