Thank you so much, there was a huge storm yesterday and I was walking around campus and my laptop got water damaged and there was lines and stuff across the screen and all it said was that it was rebooting but it never got passed that screen. Today it randomly started working and I didn’t take any chances backed everything up in case it stops working again.

Best explanation I've come across so far. Except one question... are you saying that it will make multiple copies over the allotted time you choose (over time accumulating multiple copies of each individual file) or, are the files overwritten using this method, being updated with the most recent changes? Also I'd like to ask, will this method back up every file type that I might have on my computer, or is windows limited in some way which would require me to use other software? thanks
@CloudNexus
@CloudNexus 2 жыл бұрын
Glad you have found it useful. Great Question, What you'll get is multiple copies of the file that you can restore from any day when the backup ran. The way it does this, it doesn't take full copies every single time the backup runs, it only backups any changes that have occurred. That way it is super efficient on storage over the life time of the back up. Windows backup will backup all the files that you select during the setup process. What it's not intended for is to backup windows system files or any applications. It's not a full system backup, We are going to make a video covering that if you are interested! Hope this helps ☺️

what do you do when there isnt any allocated space
@CloudNexus
@CloudNexus 2 жыл бұрын
Hiya - if there's no allocated space on the Backup drive. I would guess it's one of two things, either the backup drive is new hasn't been used before OR the backup drive has been used and it's got an old/incompatible file system on it (e.g. it was used for Mac/Linux previously. If it's a new drive, you can follow the steps early in the video to create the new disk partition on there. It it's an old drive *and you definitely don't care what's on it* . When you get to the Disk Manager step. Connect your backup drive and you should see it at the bottom of the Disk Management window. Let's say it's called Drive D:. Right-click on the Primary Partition space where it says Drive D: and choose Delete Volume. Follow this and it will let you completely delete anything that's already on the drive. Now you can follow the Create Partition steps exactly as in the video again and you should be good from there. *this will completely delete anything which was on the drive* so make sure you definitely don't care what's on it first :) Hope that helps!

@@CloudNexus To understand this a bit more, is it correct that the backup makes a snapshot at each schedule is run. It is not synchronization. Therefore, if we delete a file from a computer it will not delete from the backup. But then backing up every hour could use up the space very fast.

How long would the initial backup take?
@CloudNexus
@CloudNexus 3 жыл бұрын
Hiya - not very long in our experience but really does depend on how much data you're backing up. In our first run test on a laptop with about 250GB of data on it, the first run took about 20 minutes. After that each subsequent backup was no more than a couple of minutes.

I tried this and it worked but when I go in to the external HD to look at the files backed up I cannot understand what it shows. Is this normal?
@CloudNexus
@CloudNexus 3 жыл бұрын
Hiya, yes that's perfectly normal. The backup isn't designed that you can jump onto the external HD and read the files from there. They're not encrypted or anything but it just uses it's own way of doing snapshots of the files. If you need to restore anything you can just pop back into the Windows Backup and restore the files from there. But what you're seeing on the external drive is all OK.

QUESTION I don't leave my external hard drive plugged all the time because I take my laptop with me. When I plug my external hard drive in will it then automatically update only the new files or changed files? I don't want to have to manually do it all the time and I don't want to devote a ton of time to it. TIA
@WhiteShadowZO
@WhiteShadowZO Жыл бұрын
A few questions: 1) Having the back up run once every hour presumably means keeping the external hard drive attached to the computer. This would allow a virus or malware that's compromised the computer to also compromise the back up, no? Can the back up be done with more manual input? Ie, plug in the eternal hdd, run the back up, unplug the hdd. Rinse and repeat when desired. 2) I am confused with how the backups are saved and how that works with how long they're kept. Is it 1 back up file that gets updated only enough to match the changes that are made to the files on the system? Is it a new back up file each run but only contains the changes from the last backup file? Or am I thinking of it wrong and it isn't one packaged backup file but all the individual files copied over piecemeal? And how does that work with... 3) The "keep for" time given to the backup(s). If I back up old photos which aren't modified for a year I still don't want them forgotten about or deleted from a backup.

Hands down the best explanation on here. I do have a question though... Every step I was able to follow, except for the manual backup. When I click 'Back up now', I get the loading circle and 'backing up your data', but that lasts only for five seconds before it stops. It says that the backup has been done, but the data file is empty. There is more than enough free space, so that shouldn't be an issue... Is the backup not working because I already have some files saved on the drive?

Question, what if I’m moving all my files to a new laptop with this method? I will want to delete everything off the old laptop, including OneDrive from my File Explorer, or will that go away if I sign out from it?
@CloudNexus
@CloudNexus 3 жыл бұрын
Thats cool - you can use this as a backup method to migrate files between computers. Once you've run the backup, the easiest way to remove your documents (let's say you're selling the laptop) would be to use the "Reset this PC" option in Windows 10. Start that process and choose "Remove Everything" which will delete all files, apps and settings. If you just log out of OneDrive, it doesn't remove the OneDrive folder or the contents from your User Profile. All those items will still be on the laptop hard disk.

That's a very clear tutorial, one question just to be sure: If backup files are deleted after 1 year, what happens with files on the computer that have not been opened or edited for more that 1 year period? I assume the latest copy on the computer remains abcked up? The back up will keep the latest copy irrespective of how long since it was opened or edited? I ask because I have many files that I need to keep but will not be modifying or may not open in any 1 year period. Thanks
@CloudNexus
@CloudNexus 3 жыл бұрын
Yes absolutely correct. The backup will retain the latest version of any file so if it hasn't been opened/altered for a year or more, it will simply keep a copy of the original file. If for any reason, the BACKUP version of that file is deleted, it would simply take another copy of the file from the computer when the scheduled backup runs again.

Hey James, Unfortunately not. The Backup experience is a bit different in Windows 11 (and it's not as good) - We've made a video on this here *kzbin.info/www/bejne/imTReHusqs-Kg6M**.* You should be fine to buy a 1TB drive for your machine. Because of the way the backup works, it only takes incremental backups of any changes. It doesn't make a full backup everytime it runs. You should be all set with a 1TB drive.

Question, what would happen after a year of keeping your backup files/folders? Is it going to be deleted? Appreciate any feedback :).

Hi, if I only save my back-ups for one year, what happens to therm at that point, if something happens to my disc on my computer and it crashes or something? I'm not understanding something here. Sorry. Thanks.

Ok, up to the 'say yes to this screen' comment - there is no intermediate screen before the 'partition' screen, and then no partition on the that screen, like you show here. Why is my win10 not the same as others'? I'm trying to back up a Lenovo, and every youtube explanation shows different screens from what appears on my laptop.

what is the difference between "Back up using File History" and "Back up and Restore (widows 7) ? Which one is better for Personal Computer (PC). Any advice will be highly appreciated!

Hey there, Sorry for the late reply. - File History: This is the go-to choice for casual users who want simple and automatic protection. It automatically backs up your Documents, Pictures, Music, and Downloads folders, so you don't have to worry about remembering to do it manually. Plus, it keeps multiple versions of your files, so you can easily restore them to any point in time. Backup and Restore (Windows 7): If you need more comprehensive protection, Backup and Restore is your guy. It can back up your entire system, including system files and applications. This means you can restore your computer to its exact state if something goes wrong. However, it's not as user-friendly as File History and requires manual initiation of backups. Recommendation: For most folks, File History is the perfect balance of ease of use and protection. It's great for backing up your everyday files and giving you peace of mind. But if you need system-level backups or granular control over your backups, Backup and Restore is the way to go. Hope this helps! 🚀

I’m using as external Samsung SSD T7 on windows 10. When I try to extend volume it’s grayed out and won’t let me. My drive says NTFS and external SSD is in FAT file format. Could this be the reason? How do I resolve it? How can I change the file format on the SSD to NTFS if that’s the solution?
@CloudNexus
@CloudNexus 3 жыл бұрын
Hiya - So yes, it's because it's a FAT file system on the SSD which is probably causing you the issue. Easiest way to convert it to NTFS is from the command line; 1. Hit Windows and type CMD to bring up a command prompt Assuming that your SSD drive is drive E: you would type the following _(but change the drive letter to whatever your SSD drive is)_ convert e: /FS:NTFS That should sort it. After that you should be able to extend the volume to the full size of the drive.

@@MeneTekelUpharsin Do you mean the files on the computer or the files on the backup SSD will be deleted after formatting? And is there a better solution? I wish I had known about the differences in file formats but none of the youtube reviews I watched on backup drives ever mentioned this. Everyone was just raving about Samsung SSDs and I assumed these drives are compatible with Window devices.

Thanks for the tutorial. It was easy and clear…just one question and that is after the auto backup annual delete does the application automatically backup or do I have to diary in another manual backup process?

Thanks! So if you back up every hour, do you leave the external hard drive plugged in all the time?
@CloudNexus

Hiyaaa!! Ideally yes, but don't worry if you need to unplug it to move around. As long as you plug it back in again, it will carry on from where it left off and start backing your updated files! 😊

Sorry this is a daft question but has there been any changes to these files? Windows Backup will only backup any files if there have been changes since the last time the back up ran. What happens if you go to do a restore are you able to restore files? Do you get any errors when you manually backup? Let us know 😊

Question, assume the internal SSD is, say 500 GB and the external HDD is 1 terrabyte. Next, assume that the internal drive fails. Is it true that the replacement SSD must be greater than 1 terabyte? Please be careful with your answer and speak from authority. If this is true, then a shopper for a prospective backup drive must take that hidden expense into consideration, since an internal SSD of high capacity is not only expensive, but also escalates the storage volume requirements for future backups. Please advise, and please admit you do not know the answer if you have no experience with full restoration to a new internal SSD.
