Just a little adjustment for new backcountry skiers, you will get sweaty on your first hikes up. You'll learn the best kind of clothing and how fast you ski up after a few ski tours. Trust me almost everybody skis up way too fast on their first times. Best way to learn these tricks is to find a small hikes first, for example 1-2 hours climbing.

Good job guys ! I m a casual skier ... i wish to start backcountry skiing ! But i was wondering, can you use backcountry skies for regular downhill ski at ski resorts ? Also , is there some skin you can use for regular « cross country » , i wish to follow my wife few kilometers on her crosscountry machines tracks , i know the width of the skies probably wont go in the tracks but to follow will it work ? Glide onward and grip backward ? We are casuals , its more family tracks..

It will work. I only ride touring gear, even in resorts. I am thinking about making a video on this. Seems like this question comes up a lot. Look up Solomon shift bindings. Ski very close to an Alpine (resort) binding.

Denise Redäm: Personal choice woman. I always wear one when trees come into the picture but to each his/her own. The few good studies available show very little advantage to wearing a helmet. Which is surprising to me. I know I’d much rather take a header into a tree trunk or boulder wearing a helmet but again with actual impacts by skiers the stats show minor benefits wearing helmets. At best. A helmet has served me well numerous times in the trees (conifers) due to branch slap. I know my face would have been scraped up many times without the helmet and goggles. But that’s a comfort issue. Not a safety issue. I’m a downhill mountain biker. My full face and less coverage mtb helmets have saved me many times in crashes. I sustained head hits while mountain biking and whitewater kayaking that would have caused major head trauma that I biked and paddled away from without a “scratch” due to wearing appropriate head gear. I have never sustained a head hit while skiing that was traumatic or that would have been traumatic without a helmet.

@@ski4life9 I don’t ski NE ice. Just soft snow and pow these days. Ever competitively race downhill? Ever buckle into real DH skis? Often an ice field going 90+ mph? I have. Back in the day. @@mrsmartypants_1 yeah I honestly believe everyone should wear a helmet. Ask people who have suffered tbi’s or people close to those who have succumbed to head injuries. You are correct in stating that they have been shown to not always be effective in stopping concussions as it’s possible to become concussed even without direct impact to the head. However helmets do in fact consistently reduce the risk of lacerations, contusions and skulls fractures. Sitting in the snow bleeding in the backcountry isn’t fun. I can tell you with 100% certainty my helmet saved my head when I hit a tree. My helmet was turned to mush it felt like a kitchen sponge where it took the impact. Had I not had it I would have been dealing with a lot more than just my head injuries. And yes I grew up living in the heart of the Canadian Rockies. I raced for a long time still ski hard and fast and spend much of my winter in the backcountry. There’s a reason people like Cody Townsend and many others wear helmets.

How can the avalanche safety grear be no 5?

not all backcountry terrain has avalanche risk...e.g. 10-20 degree mellow terrain.

I’ve done avalanche training through national ski patrol...you don’t need a beacon if the entire terrain is mellow (terrain above you too). By mellow I also mean low risk in general (ie no tree wells). Obviously best practice is to always bring beacon though. For example, you’re not going to be worried about avalanches at all going through Stratton pond lol but that’s still considered backcountry...you’ll def need skis, skins, winter clothes, though.

This is one of those things...a little bit of knowledge is a very dangerous thing. Don't think you can learn this stuff from KZbin. Take an avy class, and go with people that know what they're doing and can teach you. People die when they underestimate this stuff, you can never learn enough about it.
