Thank You ! I'll probably try adjusting the cutting bed and see hot cuts first but this the best video out there as far as sharpening, I'll share this anytime .

The best reel sharpening video i have seen so far!..Will sharpen and adjust my Scotts reel mower asap....your idea of newspaper to test blade sharpness and gap...by small degree turns on the adjustments is perfect. Nice job, happy 4th of July!

I don’t disassemble my reel lawn mower at all I use a round diamond, grinding stone back-and-forth on the blade no lubricant I us 220. 600 grit. back-and-forth on a blade it works. You be amazed.

Very nice description. However, I think the final adjustment after sharpening should be without a grinding touch on Gardena mowers.

i like to send them home a bit on the tight side, when the burr wears off they set themselves up just perfectly. Usually takes 4/5 cuts, but super happy customers that don't call you back 6 months later to re-adjust the bedknife.

If you don’t have a large chuck like that you can keep the key way in the shaft and use a socket on it. I only have a 1/2 inch drill and that’s what I did.

My drill is also a 1/2inch chuck. What socket Size did you use? Does the socket connect up to the spindle where the gear was located? Can you briefly explain your exact process for making your drill fit? I have an EARTHWISE 16" manual reel. Thx for any help

I have an EARTHWISE 7 BLADE 16" REEL MOWER, and want to use my cordless drill to backlap my blades, however my drill chuck is not proper 3/4size like yours. How can I fit my drill to spin the blade reel?

Replace the chuck with a larger one, or get a larger drill

How often or do you ever have to put a new grind on the reel? I've never used a push reel mower, I use a Toro GreensMaster 1000 to cut my putting green, but these are interesting for the surrounding areas I'd like to keep at 5/8ths or so.

the little push mowers i like to grind every 5th or 6th backlap, on average. some more some less depends on the usage hours.

maybe I missed it but in which direction you spin the blades? backwards? How often needs to be sharpen?
@machinesnmetal
@machinesnmetal 3 жыл бұрын
Backlap = Backwards. Once a season usually keeps them cutting well. I guess it depends on how big of a yard you have and how quickly the blades go dull.
@alphacharlie3523

Any general guidance as to how often you should sharpen the blades? I understand it depends on how it is cutting but is their any danger of over sharpening? Yeah odd question with a few variables that are unpredictable.

Is the purpose of that black roller for striping or something else?
@machinesnmetal

it just holds the back of the mower up, like a 3rd wheel along the back

Is this black roller at the back really needed? Because mine was made of wood and termites ate it.

Black roller up and down adjust the blade to cut the grass small
@michaelthibault7930
@michaelthibault7930 4 жыл бұрын
The roller is a heigh adjustment; once set, it keeps the cutting line (where the bed knife and blades meet) uniformly above the ground. It's just a wheel. Yours was made of wood. A rolling pin is typically made of wood, is through drilled on (approximately) axial centres. Depending on shaft diameter, and the availability of a suitable bit, you may be able to replace the missing roller. If the rolling pin is too short, split it along its length, and space out the pieces with springs and washers.

Great video on back lapping,you showed the paper been cut at each side at the end very cleanly but not the middle,is there a reason for this?as my reel mower is not a good cut in the middle as at thee ends,just wondering if my cutting edge is bent?or if it’s a common thing with reel mowers?
@machinesnmetal
@machinesnmetal 4 жыл бұрын
well, in my experience if it cuts on either end, the middle should cut too. I've never really tested the middle, on the homeowner machines or on the reels at work.
@machinesnmetal
@machinesnmetal 4 жыл бұрын
which mower do you have? some of those extra wide scotts ones never cut well in the middle as the bedknife is just too long and flexes in the center.
