After watching a number of videos on this topic and not getting it, this one did it for me! That you!!!!! Watched this video, practiced in an empty lot for 2 1/2 hours yesterday and successfully backed into a storage spot on the first try today.

I agree this is the best tutorial/training/practice video on backing up a trailer. You're the only the talks about what to do after the turn is introduced. And also thinking and planning ahead, not when/after you're jacked.

Beginner here...I like how you talked about getting that initial bend and then backing up straight will continue to intensify the turning of the trailer.

Whenever I've taught anyone to back a trailer, I've avoided words like 'right' and 'left'. They have no meaning when you're using mirrors or looking over your shoulder. Even you confused yourself at 3:51. I always teach whichever way you want the trailer to go, make the front of the car/truck/unit go that way, so ... if you want the trailer to go towards the fence, stick the front of the car towards the fence, and vice-versa! Remember, the angle of the wheels steer the car, but it's the angle of the car that steers the trailer.

The best part of this video for me was seeing you hit that dead end and how calm you were and just back out. Didn’t overthink anything that’s my fear right now I just got a 20 ft travel trailer. I’ve backed utility trailers a bit but I can always see them in the mirror easily. Don’t want to get stuck especially having to back into oncoming traffic I can’t see

OK, I think the most important point you made was PRACTICE. We are going to pick up a small utility trailer (5 x 8) today. I have an F150 like you and will go practice in a local parking lot for a while. Thank you. Left, steer right, right, steer left. I am also going to buy a backup cam. Thank you again.

I recently bought a Ford Explorer. First vehicle I ever bought with a standard hitch. I definitely want to tow with it, particularly for getting supplies for home improvement projects. Never towed before, so I need to educate myself. This video has been very helpful. Thanks!

Good video. l'm new at the whole trailer thing and this helped. I found the section on "bending" and then anticipating the correction to be most instructive. That's where I get in trouble. I bend too far initially and don't correct soon enough so I just keep turning, even when I try to correct. I saw on another video where the presenter suggested putting your hands on the bottom of the steering wheel when backing up so that when you correct, you're correcting/turning the wheel in the same direction you want the back of the trailer to go. I found that helpful. Now I gotta find myself a parking lot and practice, practice, practice. Thank you for sharing your expertise.

You're right about the lengthier the trailer, the easier the backing is. I drive a 95' e350 and recently bought a triple axle 20 foot x 8 foot trailer. Much easier than the smaller ones i used before.

Always remember if the trailer moves to the left, turn the wheel to the right. If you want to move the trailer to the right, you turn the wheel to the left

Exactly! Although, it is an oversimplified version of backing up. If you really want to understand backing up a trailer, practice, whether irl or in a game.

11:20 Learn the jacknife point When you arrive at the parking lot,,, drive forwards on full lock and note the angle of the trailer. Keep driving forwards, straightening up over about five feet. Note the angle of the trailer. When reversing aim to never get to that angle ! Start chasing it well before.

I do some mental gymnastics. Before I start backing up, I ask myself which way would I turn the wheel if I was backing up my truck without a trailer. When that is clear in my head, I turn the wheel the opposite way and start backing up, looking over my shoulder to confirm the trailer is going the direction I want. After that, correction turns come easier since they are just reactions to the direction the trailer is going.

I've watched 6-10 videos, both short and lengthy. They've been amateur and professional (U-Haul, BW hitches, etc.). Yours has been of the most value to me. From about 9:00 onward when you talk about introducing a "bend" and then allowing the trailer to turn on its own while you correct the bend and get the truck back in front of it is very helpful. I liked your backup camera angle because I could watch the center of the truck (the hitch area) as it moved left and right across the trailer's surface while backing. I will not go past 2/3 or 3/4 so that the trailer doesn't get to 90-degrees and jackknife. The only other point I wished you elaborated on more is taking the time to come slowly to a stop so you don't risk running the trailer into the back of your truck unnecessarily. Thanks for the video! The drill of going around the parking lot in a big circle is awesome and will do a lot to increase my skill level I'm sure! I'll have to try both clockwise and counter. I was kinda hoping in the last 5 minutes while you were cruising the neighborhood that you'd be backing into a driveway from a residential street - especially a driveway on the left or blind side. Thanks again - great video!

Sounds like your pattern is this: 1) Determine the pivot point 2) Introduce the bend 3) Straight to intensify the bend 4) Catch before you jackknife by turning wheel to the bend angle

I would of had a camera on the trailer also to have a different view also instead of just on top of your roof. So that way whomever wants to see the truck also from the trailer view. I personally use my fourways in case if I was backing into a driveway in a sub so whoever is coming from either direction they know that you are backing up. But once into your driveway or your clients driveway (pending where you are at) you are able to be seen, I would also recommend a amber light too if you are able to afford one while you are parked on the side of the road or backing up.
