Excellent video. It's all about the chase vehicle. All the other tutorials just show how to turn the trailer into the spot, but never mentioned anything about bringing the towing vehicle back inline. This is where all the confusion comes into play when you're new. You get the trailer in, but your tow vehicle is all crooked, and as you try to straighten it out, your trailer swings out of place, and the sweats start to come out, and the cussing starts. I've learned that as soon as you see the trailer going in the direction that you want, start to straighten out your tow vehicle slowly.

Great video. I'm a truck driver also, so I was watching this video with "critical eyes"..nice job!! If I may, I would like to also suggest that new RVs go out and buy some cheap orange cones and take them to a wide open area to practice backing before going on a trip. When I got my CDL (trucker's license), we had 3 weeks of driving in a practice lot before they would take us on the road. Having the visual and then being able to actually do what we saw was a great way to sharpen the skills.

OMG, thank you so much for this. Very helpful. Pretty much a newbie for my travel trailer, and have backed into camp sites successfully all but one time. That time, I had to maneuver it in two different directions, two different turns. And there were people watching, they came out of their rv's to watch and make snide comments. luckily the gentleman next door to my site, offered to back it in for me. He did it beautifully, and then told me he was a professional truck driver. If felt somewhat better after that. I have to say, I didn't try to converse or make nice with those others who made the snide comments during our stay there.

I thought this was pretty lame at first, but I really like seeing it from a 'birdseye' point of view. One thing you might put in is about OVERCORRECTION. After putting my trailer in the driveway by myself (and only having taken the trailer out a couple of times), at the end of my ordeal, I finally realized my problem was overcorrecting. It is really hard to hold yourself back from turning that wheel all the way the other direction when the trailer is going wrong. You did mention slow, small turns, but it might be good to emphasize that a bit in there somewhere. Newbies, like me, tend to freak out and overcorrect, haha!

This is a great video, but not without issues that I have had with my experience. First, @1:55, it has been my experience that larger trailers (in general) maneuver BETTER than smaller trailers. Yes, there are other considerations, but just because something is bigger doesn't mean it will be more difficult. Second, at 16:50, in a situation where there is a semi-skilled driver involved, it is far better for the spotter to STFU, and to only speak when I'm about to hit something. There is nothing worse than somebody barking orders at you. I suppose it you've developed a great team the constant feedback will be beneficial, but most spotters hardly understand how a towing system works in a reverse direction unless they have performed it themselves with the same trailer and tow vehicle. Especially with small trailers, the is a significant input delay that most spotters fail to identify. Lastly, most people probably won't understand what your are talking about until they actually do it first, then watch you video to fully understand WHY you have great advice. GOAL is the best advice you gave. If you can't see what the issue is from the driver's seat, get out and fully understand what the issue is.

I'm not a professional at doing this, but I have trained dogs. Dogs do not understand conversations and sentences. That's gibberish to them. They understand single words and hand signals that are taught to them. Drivers/backers do much better when the spotter (with prior agreements) gives one word requests and/or various hand signals. Also, to be a good spotter, one must be moving as the trailer is moving, so as to not be out of position. I recently spotted a guy who was backing in a 35 foot 5th wheel into a space, where the "street" was very narrow. He had a back spotter, so I volunteered to be his front spotter, watching the distance from the front of his huge truck to obstacles across the "street" that he wanted to avoid. I darted from one side of the front to the other side of the front of his truck, depending upon which way he was turning at a given moment. I held both hands up into a position that was like a football referee motioning that a field goal is good. I continually moved my open, flat hands either closer or farther apart to show the driver how close he was to his closest obstacle. I didn't have to yell and scream. Just hand distance signals and being in continual proper position. I also seems to me that (I don't know for sure) single axle trailers are much more sensitive to turns than double axle trailers, so that steering wheel movements should be more subtle. Can someone who's handled both single and double axles comment on this for me?

I usually don’t have trouble backing into campsites. However, last weekend we had a campsite where there was a fairly narrow road, and overhanging branches on both sides of the road and at the entrance of the campsite . Therefore, there was a very small window of opening into the campsite and I put some scratches on my camper. Sometimes the campground needs to do a little more maintenance to ease the difficulties for the campers. They had rules that we could not trim them ourselves.

Great video! I hate some that simply say do the opposite of what you normally do when backing with a trailer. I don't really need to think when just backing up a vehicle. So the "do the opposite" means I first have to think of what the normal is! To much thinking in the heat of the moment. The way you advise is much simpler! Warning: Long comment here from a solo female camper in Colorado, USA. I watched your video in Spring 2021 before I towed a 21-foot rental travel trailer for the first time ever to a lake campsite with an angled back-in spot. I was able to back it in with a spotter on my second try. I haven’t had to back a trailer in since then. Cut to Summer 2023: I just bought my own 20-foot travel trailer and after camping a few times with pull-through sites, I needed to back it in at an angle at the RV storage lot. Those vans, campers, and trailers were packed in there like sardines! Yikes! I thought I remembered how to do it but nothing was going quite right, even with a back-up camera on the trailer. I watched a bunch of KZbin videos and tried again. It still wasn’t working, it was getting dark, and so I frustratingly towed the trailer back home and parked it in the street in front of my house hoping the city law enforcement officers had better things to do than hang a tag on my RV door stating I was parked illegally and I’d have to pay a fine. I viewed more KZbin videos and finally found yours again. I figured out that I wasn’t pulling up on the correct side and wasn’t chasing the trailer properly. No other videos really explain these crucial details. I woke up early the next morning and drove out to the storage lot again. It took me a few tries in a 15 minute span, but I parked it successfully in that 12-foot by 21-foot angled spot. By myself! No tears this time! I got that “ass” in perfectly! Yours is definitely the best video out there on backing in. An A+ for you on how you demonstrated with the models. I may petition Lego to make a vehicle that will turn its front wheels side to side with a steering wheel just for you! One thing I hear in my head is what Doc Hudson tells Lightning McQueen (from Disney Cars) to do: “Turn right to go left” as I put my hand at the bottom of the steering wheel to maneuver the trailer into place. I know he’s doing it for a different reason and the advice seems so counterintuitive but it works! Anyways, thank you so incredibly much!

At about 25:11 you mention that we want the trailer to go to the left, but it is really to the right from the driver's viewpoint. That can be confusing after all that time making sure we have the bottom of the steering wheel going to the left or the right. It would be turning the bottom of the steering wheel to the right that would move the trailer in the correct position into that second campsite on the right side. Do you agree?
@CanadianCampaholic4 жыл бұрын

You articulated beautifully, well done! My issue is that after camping for 10 years, I have found that 99% of my sites are always on my passenger side, with the roads always being one way. Are you suggesting we break the rules? 😊When arriving home, I always have to pull the camper through a cul-de-sac to turn it around so that I could pull up to my driveway on my driver's side. But I very rarely have that option at a campground.
@CanadianCampaholic Жыл бұрын
Sometimes you may have no choice but to back in on the passenger side. Take your time, and don't overcrank the wheel. You may tend to cut in too tight. Get out and look several times during the maneuver and don't be afraid to pull forward if the angle is going the way you would like.
@jeasantovasco8218 Жыл бұрын
@@CanadianCampaholic Thanks so much for replying, I didn't expect a response since this video was posted so long ago. I do get out and look since I back in alone, although I have two rear view cameras on the back of my camper, one positioned high for highway driving and one positioned low for backing in although I prefer doing it on my own. I do release the wheel when in the middle of backing in, allowing the camper to guide into its spot, which usually makes that part of backing in smooth so no jackknifing. I do find it necessary to pull up, back in, pull up again and so on when the road is narrow, lots of trees in the way, and/or the spot is tight. Thanks again for reaching out. Wouldn't it be better to try and angle the trailer towards the spot by pulling across the road on an angle? (like how you would back in any spot normally). This would lessen the risk of jack knifing and set you up on the angle you want to tuck into the site/spot. (Granted you have enough room)
@CanadianCampaholic11 ай бұрын
Absolutely IF you have enough width in the lane/road outside the campsite. I know the "scoop" is pretty popular, , and as you said it can reduce the turning angle and reduce chances of jackknifing. Most places we camp have pretty narrow lanes with a lot of trees and bushes limiting your space to maneuver.

Brother, this has been the best explanation I have found. Explaining the chase part sets this video miles apart from any other I have seen. Thank you very much. I’ll take the Lego-250 over someone’s video of them parking their rig with poor explanation.

Best illustration i have seen to date! Excuses not needed for the toys because they are a scale model of what is actually happening! Out of desperation, i downloaded a game called "Cargo Parking". It requires you to back a farm tractor with trailer into a highlighted spot. You turn the steering wheel with your finger and you only have backward and forward gear. I think what makes backing up so hard is the point of rotation (the truck-trailer hitch point) is moving. If it was stationary, it would be just like drawing a circle with a compass. but with the point of rotation moving, the back of your trailer is actually drawing an ellipsoid, which is quite hard to picture. I am a newby and cant back my 42' fiver even into my driveway, but i always look at the trailer tires. the path the trailer tires are going is the exact path the trailer, or at least the "center" of the trailer is going. Thanks again for the detailed, on point, analysis!!

This video was so helpful. Thanks for explaining the chase and the spotter. I have found both to be very confusing. We have a 30 foot TT and I have backed it in about 4 times now successfully, but stressfully with getting out and looking. Gonna watch your video again.

Thank you so much this video is EXCELLENT! Gotta tell you my husband and I have been trailering for years , backing into a site gets my blood pressure up, to a point I want to cry, or want a drink. The later is the usual lol. Itsmthe chase he hasn't gotten. I'll have him watch this thanks soooooooo much. Happy travels everyone. And be safe in these uncertain times.
