THIS is the video I have been looking for!!! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. Every other Synology Active Backup for Microsoft 365 SKIPS the configuration steps hence they just assume that the user of a Synology device should somehow already be a PowerShell expert as well as a pro at Synology Active Backup for 365 configuration. I am an IT person so I could follow along but you made the information easy to understand!!! Great Job

Hi Ken, I'm glad that the video helped you out. I actually needed to figure out this setup for work so I had an incentive to try to understand the PowerShell part of things. I'm happy to hear that I was able to explain things well enough for you to reach out with your wonderful comment. Thanks so much!!

@@digital_aloha I got through 100% of the instruction to backup including the Powershell info. Then I got stuck on the Restore as MOST people stop when they get the backup job to work not realizing it is easy to backup but impossible to restore (if something is wrong) :-) The issue I had was that I could not find the Active Backup for 365 Portal!! It is not in the package center nor is easily found on the web. Do you have another video on the proper way to install/configure Active Backup for Microsoft 365 Portal?
@digital_aloha
@digital_aloha 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ken, You should see the Active Backup for Microsoft 365 Portal under Main Menu. I run through a restore process in this video that starts at 6:14 which has me using the Portal as well. I also just installed the Active Backup for Microsoft 365 package within DSM7 and the Portal is installed as part of the package. Hope this helps?

How do you restore 500 Calendar events, or whole calendars ? Its only possible to restore 100 events at a time - totally useless
@digital_aloha
@digital_aloha Жыл бұрын
@christophezwecker1831 That sucks, but good to know. I haven't had to manage calendars with large amounts of events apparently. You may want to reach out directly to Synology support for assistance. Good luck!!

We have a local AD + Office 365. Do not understand what the Azure AD does or if it conflicts with our AD? And does it cost extra?
@digital_aloha
@digital_aloha 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Andreas, That is a good question?!!? The setup described in the video doesn't tie into your local AD. Your Office 365 should have an admin account associated with it and that is what you'll need to go through the steps. Azure AD is Microsoft's cloud-based management service that you'll need to register with and grant access to your Synology NAS so you can use Active Backup for Microsoft 365. There should not be any additional cost by the way. Good luck with your setup and feel free to reach out to me if you have any further questions.

@@digital_aloha follow up question: if you want to set multiple backup tasks for the same data, eg weekly backups that last 45days, then quarterly that last 12 months and annual that never get deleted, do you have to do the whole process from start to finish?
@digital_aloha
@digital_aloha 2 жыл бұрын
@@joemcbrien1192 I just had a look and it doesn't seem like there is a way to create multiple backup schedules on a single backup task so you'll need to create a new one for each backup schedule you'd like to keep. Good luck with your backups!!

Hi, What type of RAID configuration is the best for Synology if i were to use M365 backup?
@digital_aloha
@digital_aloha 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Anne, It actually depends on what type of Synology NAS you have and what you require from your RAID setup (performance, redundancy, etc). When asked about RAID though I first think of redundancy (vs performance) so my answer will be leaning that way. For me at the very least I'd recommend either RAID1 (Mirror) or Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR) with 2 hard drives. That way if one drive fails you'll be able to keep going and replace the failed drive. I cover this in my video here -> kzbin.info/www/bejne/nImUpZ6dea2IqbM. But... RAID shouldn't be all that you are doing and I go over the 3-2-1 Backup Strategy in this video -> kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5atiKSmqpaUeqs. I cover some of the tools Synology provides to make this happen as well. Remember RAID is not a backup. Having multiple copies of your data is. Good luck to you in your setup!!

very interesting ! I wonder if it possible to encrypt data on the NAS
@digital_aloha
@digital_aloha 3 жыл бұрын
Good question... I don't see encryption options in the task creation process of Active Backup for Microsoft 365. You could created an encrypted shared folder that you use to store your Microsoft 365 backed up data which may do the trick for you. I'll research this a little more and if I find any further information I'll add an additional comment with the details.

Hi Kirk, I think what you are planning should work out. Definitely would need to mount and unmount the shared folder to keep the folder encrypted when not actively being backed up to. Would be interested to hear more if/when you get this working!!

Question, is there a MAC work around. I don't have access to a windows machine
@digital_aloha
@digital_aloha 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Phillip, I don't see a work around for MacOS natively, but there is a way to install PowerShell on MacOS that may help you - docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/scripting/install/installing-powershell-on-macos?view=powershell-7.2. I haven't tried this though. If you do try it let me know how things go. Good luck!!

Hi, successfully did this for one of my customers. Thank you! Question though, I want to do this for multiple customers. Do I need to go through this process for each customer and download / rename new scripts or are there any steps I can miss out for subsequent customers? Thanks in advance.
@digital_aloha
@digital_aloha 3 жыл бұрын
Hi alexhend75, Happy to hear that the video helped you out with your customer!! Regarding your question for your multiple customers, you will need to run through the script for each one if their Microsoft accounts are different. Each will need their own specific Tenet ID, Certificate ID and Certificate file for the Active Backup for Microsoft 365 setup. Hope that explanation helps? And let me know if you have any further questions. Good luck with your remaining customers!!

And what if I use macOS? Unfortunately, I dont find any solution for that, because I cannot use PowerShell.
@digital_aloha
@digital_aloha 3 жыл бұрын
Hi pggabo00, I never tried to figure out the process on MacOS being that Synology's instructions call for PowerShell and I had a Windows system handy. It does look like PowerShell is available on MacOS though (docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/scripting/install/installing-powershell-core-on-macos?view=powershell-7.1). If you do try out PowerShell on MacOS to try and register your Microsoft 365 account I'd love to hear how it goes. Good luck to you!!
