Hi, Bob! I would like to express my thanks for the inimitable way in which you explain things and the exceptional precision with which you work. You are a shining example for all those who also want to make something, but who unfortunately will never reach your level. Like me, for example. But realizing that doesn't discourage me! I look forward to the launch of your beautiful boat in 2021.

The modified bracket block @9:51 is an elegant way to resolve both dimensional limitations and the termination of the clamp. The fact that no one will ever see it makes me appreciate it more for some reason.

I just bought a wooden boat a Golant Gaffer 19 feet. I see problems all around my boat when I think about the level of attention and precision you are giving to your work and compare it to what I have on my hand. Thanks for all those great videos!, thanks to you I am dreaming of building a wooden boat from scratch one day.

She is coming along very nicely. Steam bending is one of those time when it is hurry up but go slow and I hope I have enough clamps. In your final shot the "jog" in the shear clamp on the starboard side is very obvious, bet that was fun doing. I wish I had known about the steam in place bag system when I built my jon boat a few years back, I used wet towels I heated in a microwave then wrapped em around the shear. Yours are much more elegant then mine are. I let em run wild above the shear then planned em down to the line.

This is amazing Bob! The time and patience shows in the work you do. I remember building my plywood boat - I had very little knowledge of what I was doing and I broke my sheer clamp trying to put it in. Mainly cause I was too impatient to steam it. The work you are doing is inspiring me to build a proper vessel, and hopefully the love and care you are demonstrating will rub off on me :] Thanks for your videos. Happy New Year!

Thank you Bob for great Boxing Day video. Nice trick on the tube welding. Not all of us have the tough skin that Lou had on the ends of his finger so your method fits much better. Take care, stay well and Happy New Year to you.

Pretty cool, steam cooker bending. I've seen Louis do it and Steve and the guys over at Acorn to Arrabella too. Sure would have been nice to have another hand or two getting that bending done while the rail was at its optimal heat, but you got it in there all the same. Great job. Hopefully, there wont be any visable knife marks from cutting the bag back open. I know you will likely be sanding again, but the utility knife can sink pretty deep into the fir if its still wet from the steam. I'm sure you were more careful than it looked on camers, though. The craft is coming along beautifully. I saw that there is another video posted after this since I've had time to watch, so I'm going to go watch that one now and get caught up. Thanks again for bringing us along on your journey in building this boat. I love watching quality crafts-persons at work.

Just wanted to say home much I enjoy your videos. I use a lot of the techniques to make 1/4 scale rc scale gliders which are often oval fuselages , all planked. Ive been considering building a boat as I live a few miles from the sea near Southampton in the UK and I may just start with a stitch and glue kit.

Hi Thomas, Yes, one can purchase bags. In my application a 4" bag was important. The idea of the bag is to have as small of steam chambers as possible to concentrate the steaming of the wood. I felt it was important to show how one can make bags with local materials. Thanks for watching! Cheers,

It occurs to me that vacuum food sealing bags would be useful for steaming planks, the bags have sealed edges and open ends, can be supplied in various widths and lengths, just a thought!

Dear Sir, Another great video, thanks! Just a few silly questions. At 23:55 it appears you are trimming the end of the sheer clamp, so that it fits to the bracket you show @9:50. After the steam, do the sheer clamps contract? If so, how do you account for this contraction, so that the end of the sheer clamp fits tightly to the bracket? Cheers from Brazil!
@TheArtofBoatBuilding4 жыл бұрын
Hi Eugenio, Wood doesn't shrink in length as much as it does in width. The sheer clamp will be covered by the deck and covering boards so a really tight fit is not needed. Thanks for watching! Cheers,

With undisguised impatience and diligence, I follow your series about the birth of a ship. Honestly, I'm a little surprised by the sequence of actions, which is not logical for me. The installation of sheer clamps and auxiliary ribs after painting confuses me. Is there any reason for that that escapes my notion of shipbuilding. And finally what was needed at the very beginning: Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, to you and everyone who follows this interesting series
@TheArtofBoatBuilding4 жыл бұрын
Hi Milenko, Small boat building is a much different process than Ship building. Small boats are built on molds upside down, therefore it is impossible to install some of the frames and sheer clamp until the boat is flipped. One gets a better paint job by applying the first coat while bottoms up. The few screw heads will be filled with fairing compound and painted with the final coats of paint. The sequence of actions is well documented in Greg Rössel's book "Building Small Boats" ( my main reference book) www.woodenboatstore.com/products/building-small-boats?variant=16904410857562¤cy=USD&gclid=Cj0KCQiAoab_BRCxARIsANMx4S4YLeLSCzL8d4X87FdbcSPxJhMY6WgnPOC-a5Rq6KfneaUbymggb04aAgQUEALw_wcB Thanks for watching!
