Interesting what you can learn. All my life I have heard of blue printing and balancing and never bothered looking into it because it seemed complicated and expensive. Your video made me realize I could have done this myself to engines I have rebuilt and now puts me in mind of doing it to a 383 I'm building. It isn't rocket science.

nice work at 15:50! I hate doing that (setting pistons) as you got about a second to get it centered before it locks up on you. Mopar rods are tight even when heated so you usually have to freeze the pins too. I took out all my weight from under the pin where the 2 factory holes are and in a pinch I took it out of the pin itself inside the very ends with a bit just oversized from the ID of the pin. The pin material is much heavier than the AL piston and when you got no piston material left, you have to find places to trim. I didnt want to regrind the little ends as they were already a matched set.

Thanks! Yeah I’ll be honest I break a nervous sweat when I do that every time 😂

I’ve got a 77 280Z. Did some rust repair and gave the engine a big service. Right now rebuilding the suspension with pu bushings and welding is bc racing coilovers. After that it’s time for some bodywork and paint. And then I might look into building an engine :)

Are you asking do you have to balance the rods if you remove them? If so, not at all.

You know where this video lost me? Heating up the small end with a MAP torch. This can change the molecular structure of a rod. Especially chrome moly. Essentially annealing it while taking the brass in the bearing and making it brittle. Because the brass does the opposite quenched that steel does. The Wristband does not have to be totally inside and the rod can be pinched with foam material. Just weigh the foam and add it to the calculations.
@MrFredsAdventures5 жыл бұрын
Was wondering about heating up the end like that.
@CarsBikesandCoffee5 жыл бұрын
Mark White you can, the key is not letting it go beyond the blue tint as mentioned. The idea is to expand the hole to allow the pin to go through otherwise it won’t for these Datsun rods. Other engine builders do the same thing. Appreciate you watching!

I just did this..... worked great although I had to take out a fair amount of material to get the weight down. Mine are all balanced now but I have no compression in 3 of my 8 cylinders ?????
@CarsBikesandCoffee4 жыл бұрын
+Mike Williams lack of compression would relate to your piston rings
@ImpalaLfx3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I was about to say that and it’s cause u rearrange the sizes or volume of what sits in engine cylinders I recommend new rings and cut or refuse to size and weight or as close as u can

Is there any concern to the map gas tempering the rod end when heating? Does that make it more brittle ?
@CarsBikesandCoffee6 жыл бұрын
That’s why stopping at the color change to blue is key. Any further and you will compromise the metal’s shape.

Question. Since there is no balancing pad on those rods and the finish is shot peened, wouldnt grinding affect the rod/ pin housings?
@CarsBikesandCoffee6 жыл бұрын
To my knowledge the stock Datsun rods aren’t shot peened. Are you asking if the housing is weakened by the grinding?
@totalcookiee6 жыл бұрын
@@CarsBikesandCoffee Ah, I see. I thought they were, was told connecting rods that are peened would distort if they are ground. 👍
@CarsBikesandCoffee6 жыл бұрын
I believe you are spot on, and with that they would balance prior to shot peening, I’ll have to check.
@imnotahealthandsafetyperso48892 жыл бұрын
Hold on fella you swapped to arp then balanced I never see the re size after fitting the arp bolts or did you not re size after fitting the bolts not being a smart arse just asking if it really needs doing as my rods measure spot on even after bolts are tight
@CarsBikesandCoffee2 жыл бұрын
Always best to switch bolts and then resize to be absolutely perfect. In this case it was just timing. The differences as well are minute.

Might be a newb question. Is heating always needed to insert the pin into the rod? Also, was the pin bearing already inserted, i couldn't see it clearly? Tks
@CarsBikesandCoffee5 жыл бұрын
Great question! Some need the heat and some the pin easily inserts and then has a retaining clip. There really isn’t a bearing other than the oil being injected into the surfaces.

Watched video to simply see how you set up to weigh small and big end of rods as I have done this many times in the past at home and always open for better ways. I prefer to shot peen the rods after grinding if for no other reason to make them more visually even and appealing as it only takes minutes to do. As for you method of piston installation ? you should have made an installation jig so you push the pin in and it is 100% correct every time .. you installed the pin and used your hand to center the pin while the rod was cooling .. your margin of error here is very slim and the need to press the pin out and reinstall multiple times in case of error is not something I would feel comfortable doing with new pistons .. make a jig its not very time consuming and if you do this often make the jig adaptable for other piston designs
@CarsBikesandCoffee5 жыл бұрын
Right on, I appreciate your feedback. That is a really good idea. Maybe have an adjustable piece so I could dial in the pin depth. Honestly I was sweating bullets putting that pin in. Thankfully in my case installation went without any issues. Thanks for watching too!

Why didnt you wiegh the small end of the rods? This has the most effect since it is farther away from the crank
@CarsBikesandCoffee6 жыл бұрын
Small ends (piston side) were weighed and balanced to match. Then the entire rod is weighed. The delta of the weight from the heaviest is then removed from the crank end of the rod to balance the remaining rods.

Ok, you replaced the rod bolts. Why didn't you resize the rods? They will all be distorted now. The correct method is to mill the inner face of the caps flush, where the bolt, do the same to the rods inner face to true it, then resize it. now install the bolts. Btw, the rod machines do two rods at a time do 2. You can get away with vising them in with 2 blocks of rod and doing one bolt at. A time, but it's not recommended for a novice
