A good trigger is to step back a bit with your back foot, effectively giving you a slight bit more time to react and play a shot

love this trigger as it helps me with picking the length early. However, you have to be careful with inswing bowlers and not to open up your shoulder too much with the trigger.

Not a coach but looked at test cricket a lot in the 70s when back and across originated with Ian chapel in Australia and Dennis amis in England . they both scored a lot of runs but so many dismissals came from them going back and across on full length balls and once they came forward after going back , they were only inches over the crease and not forward enough , basically in no mans land . they were both great sq cutters because c they were in position to play that shot before the bowler let the ball go , but were vulnerable to a pitched up ball moving away
