Great content. Just one thing. Table etiquette isn't "petty." It's a way of honoring others. That's why it's gentlemanly.

The essence of it is consideration for the comfort of others. Putting people at their ease, from the highest-ranked to the lowest, making sure they have what they need. In public a gentleman is never out of control of himself or his emotions. He is always at ease.

I'm a lady commenting, born Catholic, but always noticed that a gentleman was attractive to me compared to the rough bad boy and never really knew why.... perhaps it was my baptism? Perhaps I'll never know why........ but I figured bad boys or 'project' men were only fun in fiction, not reality.

Donald Trump’s “buffoonery” is his way of mirroring his enemy’s and matching them punch for punch. Unfortunately, being a gentleman in the media environment will get him eaten alive. He has done a good job balancing the weight of the world with the weight of the media and his internet character. We admire this talk as we have 3 sons and will pass this on. As a Catholic family, we strive for virtue and pray for it daily.

The words of Newman he quotes are not an unqualified endorsement of that conception of the gentleman. Newman was far too deep to unqualifiedly endorse such a bovine and worldly conception, knowing as he did that Christ Himself overturned the tables and engaged in vigorous denunciations of the Jews. And of course saints like John Chrysostom and Jerome were often very less than polite. Read the whole passage of Newman. He goes on to say, for example, that the conception of a gentleman he presents may help produce a great man like St. Basil or a wretch like Julian the Apostate.

I think it comes down to prudence. Christ was without original sin, so He did not deal with passions trying to hijack His will like we do. We should always be very cautious of when we choose to act rudely or harshly with anyone, as we have passions trying to hijack our emotions constantly.

The Trump example is good and bad at the same time. It's incredible how clergy are in favour of the progressism way to life. Please redeem yourself. I'm sorry to say it to a man's God, but you guys should be the one to understand such things.
