I've never been really able to separate blocks from their context and their color, and I think it's likely just from the fact that I like building in survival, my stuff is much more scaled down and intimate, so it's easier to see when a block might look a bit out of place relatively. Stuff like using lecterns for fences or other villager workstations are uncertain due to costs and villagers getting busy with them.

This is a fair point, and I think there’s merit to your argument, especially on a small scale. I do think there’s value to using specific blocks in survival that you normally might not use because of its context. Like using… copper in a gradient with granite. Seems weird, but will look really good most the time
