Most of us know that it is important to be more positive, especially as a parent, but what are the practical steps we can take to actually make it happen? In this live video, DrPaul shares five practical strategies for being a more positive parent. This increases our confidence, helps us get kids to listen without yelling, and overall increases our joy and happiness (which is totally enough of a reason to do it in the first place).
Please take a moment to fill out this form (goo.gl/forms/rxQPMdCfXePHq4eH3) to leave us your thoughts about how DrPaul's work has personally helped you as a parent. We also want to know what your main challenges are as a parent - that's what we will be working to help you with as we move forward. Thanks for being here!
parentingpowerup.com - you can get an article version and video summary of the five points Dr.Paul covered in this live broadcast.

Marwa Gad, You have been at the channel for a while and I know you can do this. Your little one is a bit precocious and needs to be held accountable for her words. Talk to her about how words can uplift or bring us down and practice saying nice things. She can apologize and learn.

Thank you for putting this great info out there! My biggest struggle as a parent is staying consistent. We will have a screen time, dinner or bedtime schedule set up that works great, but it always seems to get off balance, spin out of control and go back to a chaotic free-for-all until I can’t take it anymore, create a new schedule and start over. I have been doing this for 5 years and so far there hasn’t been anything I have tried that has helped me stick to a routine consistently for the long-term.

Dr Paul, you are my favorite parenting instructor!! This isn't live anymore, but I want to reach out in the hopes that my issues can be addressed. I'm a mom of 6 and struggling with a child (now a young teen) with a mood disorder, who is ADHD and unable to complete a task to save her life. I worry that she won't be able to care for herself as an adult. She is often upbeat and sweet and overly ecstatic, and then mood swings turn to extreme raging anger flares and property destruction for simple things like being asked to turn off the computer, not finding her shoes, or realizing at the last minute that she was supposed to do an assignment/project and she can't even bring herself tho think how to do it or what her teacher said about it. Most people see her positive, happy, fun-loving, energetic side and just LOVE her! But when the storm clouds come, All hell breaks loose! I have her on EMP, which has been a godsend, and it REALLY HELPS! but she gets frustrated with the monotony of taking it and then avoids it and then we are back to square one. I have all my other kids with issues and they ALL struggle with completing chores and I am basically spending all my time at home, trying to clear the clutter, clean up after everyone, calling everyone to come to do their house cares (we call chores "cares" because chores became a dirty word and we are caring for the house). I want to create a home where I am teaching them to be self-reliant and not enable them to expect everything to be done for them. My oldest 4 are all in or entering the teen phase. They fight with each other so much. And I am trying to keep myself calm. I recognize that somehow I created this defiance and resistance. But I want to undo it! I want to make it fun and help them see it as a way to bond and enjoy work, not just see it as drudgery. AND I work at a daycare. THAT involves a whole other aspect to caring for kids! All of the teachers do things differently. But I am one who really tries to be balanced and connected. I have kids there with ODD and the struggle is real when I have 25 kids to work around and keep everyone safe and like they are at home away from home. I have to pick my battles. But sometimes one issue will get pretty intense and causes bigger issues. These kids need support and some kind of stability where discipline is like how you mentioned! How Do I get the attention in the midst of screaming kids without screaming to be heard? I am great at getting one on one, and getting to that point where we connect, but when I'm dealing with 5 at once, and 2 run off before I can address it, I'm at my wit's end.
@LiveOnPurposeTV
@LiveOnPurposeTV 2 жыл бұрын
There is a lot going on here and I don't think I can address everything in a comment. Try having family councils with your family where you can discuss things when everyone is not fighting. See my family rules and discuss those. Have consequences and reward for when things get done. Keep it positive and they will respond positively to you.

My biggest struggle has a parent and I have children from 2 to 11 and 17 being the eldest is getting my children to understand that every decision I make whether they like it or not is because I want the best for them. It feels as if we speak a different language is specially with my teenager so I would say that my biggest challenge being a parent is me understanding my kids and my kids understanding me.

I love your channel! I can’t even list the things in my life your videos have just helped me so much! Anyways to answer your question about parenting: I am a mom or a 3 and 6 year old boys. The hardest thing for me is making enough time for my kids while keeping house as clean as my spouse wants it. I recently quit nursing to be a stay at home mom and I thought I’d have all this time but now it’s worse cuz my work is my home. I feel like a failure if I’m a stay at home mom and I don’t have a perfectly clean home. I’m finding myself spending less time with my little guys and feeling like I’m accomplishing nothing. My kids will be my priority one day and house will suffer then my spouse comes home and acts like I’m doing nothing lol. It’s hard to find balance I guess

I am from CA. I really needed this video - Struggling with the distance learning with my kid not in school during the day. I have two struggles: 1) How to separate my ability to show unconditional love from my expectation of my kid's behavior and actions. My parents were very conditional in the love they showed to me (they were only happy when I behaved and performed as they wanted and withdrew love when they didn't like what I was doing). There was a lot of conflict and negativity. I don't want to be that kind of parent and I hate conflict. 2) My husband and I have very different parenting perspectives and we expect to co-parent effectively. I want to be a parent that sets limits and expectations, house rules, etc. My husband believes that setting any limits, requiring chores, etc. will just cause our son to shut down and not interact with us, and make him a less cooperative family member in the long run.

Kristin Whipple, yes, they do. Use the time in the car, no electronics to just chat, this has helped so many people I know to open up communication. Show an interest in something they love and have them teach you. It may bore you to death but it isn't about the subject, it is about the child.

Teenagers do it sometimes because they are afraid you might view them differently when they tell you the truth about how they really feel or when they feel like you wouldn't "get it". I used to do this a lot too coz I felt this way and I felt my parents always wanted to tell me how to fix the problems I faced instead of just listening to how I feel. Perhaps your kids feel the same. Try not to take it personal, they just need a mindset shift

Hi Dr Paul! Commenting from lovely Phoenix AZ... my biggest struggle is having been tipped over for too long. My oldest (8) is special needs with PANS as well as autistic, ODD and ADHD behaviors. Yikes. I have had my confidence as a parent crushed by my sons non stop power struggles, oppositional and negative attitude and violent outbursts towards me and his younger siblings. I haven’t been able to feel much more than the obligation to love him in the past few years, I want to show my love but he is constantly disrespecting me, my boundaries and any attempt I make to connect or provide for him. It’s like he lives in the land of NO. I have literally drained my family’s bank account trying to get him help (therapists and specialists) and nothing has worked and now I just feel resentment. To make matters difficult, he only has the worst behaviors from Nov-April while he is flaring from PANS and the rest of the year we are trying so hard to catch up emotionally/socially/academically. I’ve been tipped over so long I’ve been dreaming of the day I *might* get a break from him. Maybe a video on coping with special needs parenting? How can I get back on track?

Biggest struggle is consistency. Moods, lack of sleep, hunger, just being on top of my game sort of stuff. It is so difficult to put my own needs for some things in front. I just remember, you can't give out of an empty cup. It is amazing how the natural instinct to care for others can contradict the need to care for ourselves so we have something to give.

Dr. Paul I am a non-custodial parent, and my biggest struggle is being influential and creating a bond in small amounts of time, I feel like time is my enemy, and I often find myself trying to do many activities as I can possibly do for my child in such little time, that I see another problem developing, there is no sense of normalcy, because I try to make all these memorable moments and teach my values, I would like to teach discipline so I can help raise a confident child, but I dont think I have enough time to do that, in the end i feel like i am not doing enough, but also limited in doing more. Thank you for the insight.

First, I want to thank you for your service, Kyle Morrison. Second, I want to offer several resources to you: We have a Positive Personal Development playlist, which will help you cultivate positivity in different areas of your life so that will know how to choose positivity in a variety of situations - kzbin.info/aero/PLq2mRDkHEBPCYtqYUCuzsyYpAlzKZDVVV . We also have the "Stay Positive In a Negative Situation" playlist - kzbin.info/aero/PLq2mRDkHEBPBZvvJil5bTRokIU0LS3OCA . That one has some really good videos, such as resiliency, how to stay positive no matter what, and mental health self care strategies. This one might be a good one to start with: "How To Heal From A Traumatic Experience" - kzbin.info/www/bejne/rYvQl3Roi76HqLc Another option is to take advantage of our free 25 minute call with a Live On Purpose coach. Coaches are different than therapists; here is a video that explains my take on it: "What's The Difference Between Therapy And Life Coaching?" - kzbin.info/www/bejne/oGSuoJl6oLR0itE If you would like to talk to a coach, go here to schedule the call: DrPaulJenkins.com/breakthroughcall . We have more resources, but I don't want to overload you with information. I think these are a good place to start. If you want to know more, please let me know in another comment. Best wishes, and I hope we can be of service to you.
