The problem with being a rare book dealer for me would be that I’d have to sell the rare books, and not just buy them…

I’m so glad you are driving your forces to KZbin to comment for the giveaways. I love your KZbin videos. Extremely informative in all facets of antiquarian books and rare book collecting/selling! I am wanting to enter the St.Germain book giveaway. I find it extremely interesting and would love to delve into how he eloquently made his case for law and Conscience working together to serve the justice system of his day. Would be such a mind opening piece of history to dive right into and also to add to my antiquarian collection. 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼

It's taken KZbin a while to realise my lifelong interest in books and to start showing content about that niche to me ... but I am glad that it finally has :)

I wonder if provenance can add value to more modern books. The example I have in mind is a book published by Oxford University Press (at Clarendon) I recently bought, second-hand, which had markings indicating it belonged to the Press' library -- something I did not know existed. Apparently this publisher kept a copy of their publications for reference or as examples of their product. (Or for some eccentric reason that only makes sense to the British.) I'm not planning on reselling this book -- I bought it for my own use -- but finding these markings made it much more interesting. An unexpected cherry on top!

ex library books actually have less value.

What an amazing book! Can you please discuss book plates. When the original owner had a large collection (many rare), but with their name on the book plate. Does it ruin the value of the book or enhance it if the collector is known. I’m surprised that book didn’t have one. Thank you.

I do mention provenance and bookplates a lot in videos but maybe not exclusively. Good bookplates and provenance often add to value.

Dear Adam, I follow your channel for some time now and I have to say - I love your videos and your passion. For all of what you’re doing, thank you! I am 28 years old, passionate about rare books (especially in natural history) and would love becoming a rare book dealer. However, I have one main problem: books to sell! As rare books are expensive, I find it difficult to evaluate how much would I need to start a business and grow from there. My current job allow me some spare money each month but certainly not to « stack » some rare books before opening my own library. And, sadly, I always happen to be interested in books that range between €1,000 and 6 figures books. Obviously it is a bit difficult to start a real collection as I am still young and without much money to spare on it. Considering what I have written, do you have any recommandations? I know asking such a question here on KZbin might be difficult and if needed I would love to have a chat with you. Best from Paris, Alexis

When starting out book in the 1000-2000 range probably are the sweet spot to experiment with - interesting books with not too much capital at risk. If you see something on eBay or Catawiki or in a shot in Paris or at the flea markets you can always email me for advise on value or where to try selling it. Webuyrarebooks@gmail.com

I wouldnt call that symbol a globe with a cross over it as two separate symbols. To me it looks like a representation of the globus cruciger, which, to be fair, is an orb with a cross on it, but it is also a distinct symbol with a long and distinguished history.

You may not need a PhD in history to be a book dealer - but the easy way you wear your extensive learning suggests it would certainly help! ;)

When you write to a curator, do you send the quote in the introductory email or wait until they respond? In another video you priced a few books at double the cost, what made you decide to price this one at 3x?
@RareBookBuyer8 ай бұрын
I would write a polite intro with the quote . The 3x might be if I think I added a lot of value or was lucky enough to find a bargain. But of course after expenses in business those seemingly grand profit margins finish quickly - not to mention the cost of unsold inventory

this could be an inappropriate question, do you happen to have a friendly relationship with rebecca offscreen? i'm aware shes married i think and a romney (perhaps the best romney though from what little I know); but it just seems like you guys would enjoy each others company in a platonic way so I'm curious if you're comfortable answering
