Lab is once a month? Dang lucky... we got it every week. And from my experience ROTC takes up so much of my time (I'm an MS3), I also work part time. My GPA took a big hit last semester and I almost failed my classes. But in the end, I believe it all will be worth it. All the experiences and leadership skills you learn are useful. YMMV :)

When I went through in 2000 Advanced Camp was at Ft. Lewis. I was at the hospital for my physical and there was a Major there who asked me if I was a cadet in Advanced Camp. He told me that he commissioned through ROTC, but he didn’t go through Advanced Camp. When he went through, Ranger School was open to cadets and if a cadet completed Ranger School he was exempted from Advanced Camp. I got CTLT at the 84th Engineers at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii. Since it’s OCONUS it was three weeks instead of two.

I talked to a recruiter for the marines today.I informed him that I’m 5’8 242 lbs.He asked me basic questions to see if I was qualified,and told me to study for the ASVAB and to drop my weight.So I would be mentally and physically prepared for what’s to come.He didn’t try to sway me into joining the marines.But,Instead told me I should talk to a Army recruiter before I made a decision.I respect him for that.

So when the computer generates which branch you get, does it look at your OML placement and such and decide "This year is short on Engineers, we need more qualified Officers in this branch and this person, ranking highly on the OML with good reviews and an Engineering degree would be good there" even if you put it as something like 3rd or 4th place or does it go more like "Oh, this person was within the Top 30% of the OML list with great reviews and an Engineering degree, he gets his first pick"

Yeah basically both of those cases are true. Think of it like this. (Arbitrary numbers here) Lets say the top 20% get their first pick considering they all don't pick the same branch, then after that the next 10% may have the possibility of getting their first pick or if those slots are already taken from the top 20% guys they might get their 2nd pick if its not taken. Then by the time it gets down to the top 40% guys they may get their 2,3,4th pick because a lot of people pick similar branches so they get stuck with the ones that are left and then maybe some get their 6,7,8th pick. THEN like the bottom 40% get Reserves or Guard. Which is why I am almost guaranteed a Reserve slot because the vast majority of people, maybe 80% choose active duty as their number 1 component.

Yes, you need to be contracted by your JR year, to get a contract you need a 2.0 gpa, and pass pt test, and height and weight HOoAh

That's a pretty good GPA. What are you trying to be. If your want intelligence officer they generally want someone above 3.4-3.5 or higher if I remember

Once you contract it helps pay but maybe you could get a scholarship. But yeah you could do extra time in college to get all 4 years in.

Hey, so when you were talking about branch placement you said it’s picked by an algorithm or something I think. Does that theoretically mean you may end up active duty yourself upon graduation?

Me? Yes and no. Because I selected Reserves as my first choice the likelihood of me getting selected for Active is basically 0. However if the Army was in a shortage for active duty officers it IS possible. But the selection is already done and Imma be a Signal Officer in the Reserves

You might just have to go to college for an extra year and come in as an MS2, the go to basic camp over your first summer then as an MS3 go to Advanced camp. Because you can't go to both Basic Camp and Advanced Camp over the same summer.

It's possible but VERY unlikely. The only reason that I will have a chance is because I will try and go after my SBOLC training as an officer. Also you don't generally shoot in ROTC only at the summer camps. Maybe if you are lucky they will take you to a range once a year. It depends on the school though.

You don't have to. You can do all 4 years of ROTC, or do 3 years or do 2 years and go to basic camp. If you are prior enlisted like he said you don't need to go to basic camp if you do the 2 year route
