This may seem sarcasm, but is it? Isn't it tiring and uncomfortable when the cleaner is in your house, entering every room, making noise and being generally a royal nuisance just by being there? Think of living your whole life like that, never alone, always surrounded by other persons, persons that are there only because they need the money... do you like the idea? 'cause I dont... may be that's because I wasn't born with a silver spoon in my mouth, but i'd hate that kind of life. Too much like a prison - with Persian rugs and gourmet food, I'll give you that!
@henrydawson87673 ай бұрын
@@isidroramos1073 While I agree, I think your missing some important context. One distinct difference I'd like to make is that we are not just talking about a hired cleaner in a modern house, but an array of *"Domestic Servant"* in a large Manor/Mansion (a English Country House to be exact). They were an organised force that leapt so that the residents might never have to lift a finger, while at the time always being unseen or unnoticeable (imagine if all your chores were just magically finished while you weren't looking). And if you owned a Manor/Mansion (especially an old one), the list of required chores to simply maintain such a large place is simply staggering. And that's not including the maintenance of both heirlooms & furniture, cooking, cleaning, childcare, gardening and much more. So in some ways, having Domestic Servants were somewhat a necessity (its why even today old Manor/Mansion are quite both a massive headache and huge potential money pit). But you do touch on an important point; that you'll never will be completely, alone. And your servant's loyalty and discretion is never guaranteed (and were often overworked and underpaid). However, back then the world wasn't as well connected. And the domestic servant life was often spent in the same house with little room for travel (the only exception being if you were hired by another Manor/Mansion). So even if they new a juicy secret, they couldn't tell many. And even if they did, if it got traced back to you, that's your reputation, career and accommodation gone, just like that (A very ugly place to be in back then). But leap forward to our time, and most of those restrictions fall away, creating quite the pickle. So yes, having servants can be tiring but were perhaps necessary. But fortunately, all the actual literal exhausting work would be done for you (unfortunately, by often overworked and underpaid domestic servants).

Learning about the culture and customs of a country that one was not raised within is very difficult! The differences between the various socio-economic groups are amazing! Britain has a well-established class system with rigid rules; one knows where one is within the pecking order. America, not so much; but it is there; as is true in European countries where a monarchy either reigns (but does not rule) or are people who compose the so-called "upper-crust" of those societies (many springing from families that were once royal).
@nomahope31823 ай бұрын
But Britain's class system is slowing eroding away. Heir to the throne is married to a commoner, so is his brother. Most aristocrats have money problems and can't keep up with the Kardashians.
@OffGridInvestor3 ай бұрын
We had it here in Australia until a rebellion destroyed the class system essential over gold mining rights. 93 people got the bullet in one night, the government tried to justify themselves and the wider public wouldn't have it so they relented and the class system collapsed soon after.
@MalcolmRose-l3b21 күн бұрын
Actually, I think that the American "class system" is just as rigid as in the UK. My super posh friends in the UK are happy to be friendly with anyone - it's new money types in the UK who look down on people they see as inferior. I suppose they aren't as comfortable in their own skins yet. It may vary across the regions but old money still looks down on new money in the US possibly because the American upper class need a few more generations of wealth to bed in.
