From a Swedish Citizen's perspective, I must say Sonny, that most people can't understand Danish or Norwegian, despite 80% of the languages being the same. It's ridiculously similar, however a lot of Swedish people can't understand German either despite the fact that almost 50% of words in Swedish are strictly German loanwords. The funny part is that the further south you go in Sweden, the easier the people have it to understand Norwegian and Danish, reason be, the further south you go, the older the dialects get. I speak the oldest remaining dialect in Sweden, it's not even a Swedish dialect, it's a Danish dialect, it has changed a fair bit since the region was under Danish rule. But it's crazy old. It's not very common for people to understand Norwegian and Danish anywhere in Sweden, after all, out of all of them, Danish is the oldest, although it doesn't sound at all like Old Danish, Norwegian is technically a Danish dialect which has been spoken with a Norwegian accent for the longest time, 300 years or so, after all, actual Old Norwegian is modern day Faroese or Icelandic. If we leave it at written language, then most people in Sweden, Denmark and Norway can understand each other with no real problem, there's only a few words which are unique to each language. So in general, Swedish Jag heter X, is similar to Danish Jeg heter X, and Norwegian Eg heter X. In this case only the 1st person pronoun is changed, aka the word for I. So for example a text in Norwegian may look like; Så når eg kom hjem fra skolen min så spisede eg pizza å såg på telefonen min en Indones som talede åtte språg. In Swedish that would be; Så när jag kom hem från skolan min så åt jag pizza och såg på telefonen min en Indones som talade åtta språk. The sentence structure would change a bit. But not that important, Swedish is very malleable compared to English, pronouns can go after and before nouns and verbs. But the only real thing that changed was the word Spisede which became åt, In Swedish we still have the word Spis which means meal/eat but we mostly use it as a short form for the word Spishäll which means stove top, or literally food slate. and åt is just english eat. And the phrase in English is; So when I came home from my school then I ate pizza and watched on my phone an Indonesian guy who spoke eight languages. The languages are very similar, Swedish is the most malleable of them all, it's extremely variable, mostly due to being the worlds oldest still spoken CONLANG, people who say it's a natural language is beyond daft. In the 1800s after the German and French influences on the original language which we call today Old Swedish, not that anyone knows what that is in Sweden these days, well the government decided to smash words from all the existing dialects to create a unified language. A similar situation to Bahasa Indonesia, which is just a collection of Malay words that were bundled together to create a language everyone could understand. Only difference was in Sweden after the 1800s when they invented Rikssvenska which is the name of the invented Swedish language, everyone was forced to speak it, as speaking in dialect was considered ugly. Linguistical history, everyone... but the Swedes have always been somewhat of an extremely forceful bunch. So while I'm a Swedish Citizen through and through I'm a Dane, and while I speak Danish, learning how to write in Danish is pain, because it doesn't sound the same as to how it is written. Not that my dialect sounds remotely similar to written Swedish either. But still I had 12 years of Swedish in school. And while in Swedish lessons in Sweden, some studies into Norwegian and Danish are done, to show some differences, however 1 or 2 40 minute lessons per year about Danish and Norwegian for 12 years doesn't really do much for writing skills. However here's the kicker, Icelandic if written down, as long as you have a decent understanding of Swedish, you can actually read Icelandic. Because Hávandi(pregnant) in Icelandic while dissimilar to the Swedish word which is Gravid, which is of Latin origin, gravidus, however we still have the cognate word for Hávandi, which is Havande. So while most younger people would suffer to understand much due to a lack of formal education and a severely lower vocabulary, roughly 80-90% of Icelandic can be read pretty easily. Had we gone back to reading Old Swedish though, nearly none of modern day Swedish people could understand 60% of it. The grammar is harder, it's like German with 3 grammatical genders, the grammar makes modern German look easy, I mean genitives applied to both words like, case agreement in Spanish, la hermosa el hermoso... So the phrase the the church's halls would be Kyrkans Hallars -s being the genitive in this case, In my dialect it's -a(s) Köekanas Hallaa. Old Swedish is a really interesting subject which isn't really taught at all in school either. I wish it were, because as a language it was interesting, but that's it for me, Du får hava ena godan aptana, herr Sonny. I'll translate it because you can't google translate that shit, You have a good evening, mister Sonny. Oh and as you're studying German, you know the German word for Picture, Bild, well it's the same word in Swedish, however in old Swedish it was Bilæti which is similar to modern day Danish Bilæte(picture). Although we have a word for it in Swedish which is a descendant Beläte it now means graven image.

The Scandinavian languages are a lot closer than 80% though. And it is more or less a matter of how much exposure you have to each Scandinavian languages that matters if you understand each other or not. Me for example is a native Swedish speaker and I have not a problem at all to understand Norwegians even though I am from Stockholm. There are Swedish spoken dialects I find a lot harder to understand (yours for example if you are from Skåne) than spoken Norwegian. Written Danish and Norwegian are more or less 95% (or more) understandable.

From another Swede i'll add that many have norweigan / finnish (or atleast 50%) relatives which makes it easier to understand the nordic languages, I for instance understand Norwegian fully even tho i live far North and about 50% of Danish while German is at about a 15% rate of understanding
