I am not Miranda's target demographic, but I have a playlist of the Best of Miranda I play occasionally when I'd rather end a rough day on a happier, funnier note. This is one of those videos that cheers me up. In regards to her Netflix show, this is the Miranda that is missing from Haters Back Off. Notice the accidental charm of MIranda's interaction with others. While she is convinced that she is better than everyone else, she is committed to helping them succeed. That is charming. The brilliance of Colleen's creation is weaving insanity with sanity. The Miranda in the Netflix show is different from KZbin Miranda and not in a good way. Netflix Miranda is devoid of her signature delusional charm. Netflix Miranda is abrasive to the point of being abusive. One review I read on Netflix said it best by referring to Miranda at a "hapless monster," rather than a "lovable loser." That "monster" didn't build a multi-million subscriber channel on KZbin; a hapless, arrogant, charming and funny fame monster did. Miranda is a gift and Colleen Ballinger is a treasure that inspires kids and makes adults roar with laughter. I hope she gets to really shine if there is a second season for her on Netflix, because Haters Back Off feels more like a cathartic primal scream with a pulsing undercurrent of anger than an attempt at producing an expanded, funny representation of Miranda's videos on KZbin. I am certain that if KZbin Miranda were to be introduced to a mainstream audience that she would find terrific success, but I don't know how successful Netflix Miranda will ultimately be with both KZbin or the viewing world at large.

Jason Collins I think the part that you're missing is that the charm comes from the people in scene laughing and playing along with her. It's the fact that they're in on the joke and invite us to be as well. That just doesn't work in the context of a scripted tv show. I'd actually argue that the Miranda presented in the television show is considerably less abrasive than what's presented online, but the characters in the show react as if she's a real person instead of a character causing you to see her qualities more clearly. Basically she's a character that's never had any sort of self-awareness, but the reason she's so hilarious is everyone around her is constantly in on the joke. She does many things throughout the show that she genuinely thinks will help, but end up having terrible consequences or reactions. The show was more an indictment of modern fame culture.

I did, and I have again. Also, you are right. It does get better with each subsequent episode, but, in my opinion, only if a person goes in with or adopts the understanding during the show that what we are watching is not a comedy, but is instead a tragedy. That is the point I make in my response to the other comment above.

I took the weekend to watch the full season of Haters Back Off again. I still believe that Colleen missed a great opportunity to get Miranda to a much wider audience. That being said, now that I have watched the entire season a second time I have a new appreciation of the show and would rate it higher than I had before, but that is because I went into the second viewing with a far different expectation. The truth is that Haters Back Off is billed as a comedy. It is not a comedy. It is, in fact, a tragedy. Pure and simple, this outing for Miranda takes a turn toward dramedy right out of the gate and then makes a beeline for tragedy faster than it takes to find a more engaging show to watch on Netflix. (Master of None, Jessica Jones, House of Cards, Black Mirror, Stranger Things...) In the end, I think that Haters Back Off is a mashup of all of the cringiest moments of The Office without the counter-balancing humor and that is then combined with the dark lens of every brooding, disturbed teen show/movie ever. As I said in my original comment, Haters Back Off has a "pulsing undercurrent of anger," that is not there by accident, but is a construct of the creator. You made a very valid point and I do believe that the bulk of the charm of Miranda comes from her interaction with those in her videos who are in on the joke, but, by the same token, all of us that watch Miranda on KZbin are in on the joke and so she is funny whether sharing the screen with someone or not. The viewing public, at large, is not in on the joke and so that is the disconnect that most reviewers are experiencing. Furthermore, there are a number of videos where Miranda is on her own and they are still wildly funny. One of my favorites is the video where she is in Scotland and is distraught because she has been refused her own castle! Just thinking of that video makes me laugh. In the end, Haters Back Off is simply not funny. It is a ride on rails straight to some kind of artistic catharsis. As a tragedy, it is brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. As a comedy and as a representation of what a Mirfanda might be excused for expecting, it is, understandably, a terrific disappointment.

Omg so funny, the comedians in cars episode w miranda. Bahahaha "hows that turkey?" I read reviews saying it fell flat, but if you are a mirfanda, you cant help but laugh all through it. Loved it :😀

At first I thought "What is *that*??"... but at some point I just came around and was able to see her for what she was doing, and was thus able to take it in in all its glory^^ As long as she keeps consistent, people will be able to see her act for what it is, and to appreciate it

Miranda handled this really well. She was in good form the whole time despite being in the presence of a world famous comedian. Most would probably have been star struck and intimidated, but she managed to keep in character. And she made him laugh. Great job.
