I did my first show last night and it went so well! My dad always loved Seinfeld so I draw a lot of inspiration from Jerry’s type of comedy. I’ve never been more relieved than when people laughed at my jokes, and I owe it to Seinfeld. I’m 15 so I was really nervous that people were just gonna laugh to make me feel better, but I’m more confident now! I still have a lot to learn though, so I’m back here scrambling around for ideas lol

I eard a interview with Woody Allen, in the very beginning, when he was exploding in the stand up, and they ask him for a advice to someone that want to make comedy. He say, "don't waste time with the jokes, if you are funny, the jokes could be bad, that it will be funny. If you aren't funny, it could be the best joke ever, no one will laugh. So go to a stage, if you are funny, after that try to write good jokes."

As a musician/songwriter I can really appreciate this. The creative process is hard to explain. Although there's a general approach to it, there are no set rules or timelines. The bottom line is "does this work?" Obviously Jerry Seinfeld's writing works, even if the vast majority of people don't recognize the painstaking effort that's involved.

The comedic process is incredible. At one point he talked about counting the syllables, and how that affects the delivery of the jokes. If you watch George Carlin, you can see how incredibly precise he was with his syllables. His performances came off more like singing than talking. He was masterful at it. And his attention to details was: beyond.

It's a testament to Seinfeld's modesty that he thinks no one will be interested in this. Actually he's sharing fascinating inside information about the way a successful comic goes about his work. And it's very funny as well as informative -- the best moment for me was the comment about the cursor. Love this video! I will use it in a class I teach.
@SmallSpoonBrigade
@SmallSpoonBrigade Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if it is modesty, he probably does genuinely question whether he is a literal tens of millions of dollars worth of funny and whatever his fee for a show is these days worth of funny. Which is even harder to define than if the laughs you're getting for no pay are genuine, let alone it being so expensive that you can literally never work again and would have to put major effort into disposing the money that you've got.

Yep, I remember years ago watching a short documentary on comedy, and one of the comics was saying that if you've got something so dark, taboo and offensive that it can't ever be shown in public, he wants to touch and hold it. And, I do think that is right. The mechanisms that trigger laughing tend to be an attempt by the brain to reset after being given something that makes absolutely no sense.

I love Jerry. People mistake his lack of neuroses for ego. It's weird. The guy is just as happy to laugh at himself and how he's spent his life as he is at anything. He's completely open and down to earth. He only gets bothered if something is untrue. To him, funny is funny. If people see ego, they're projecting it.

One thing is clear from this. Either Seinfeld is always on, never breaks character, even in interviews. Or Seinfeld really is Seinfeld. What you see is what you get. No acting required. I vote for the later. Brilliant guy. Even this interview is very funny. All he has do is talk. But fascinating to see how much effort he puts into getting a joke just right, at least in his mind.

Mr Seinfeld will never see this, but he is so right. The "they can't go stale" joke at the end of the bit really does put the final touch on it. I very much enjoyed this view into his process. My thanks to Jerry and the old grey lady.

In 300 years, Seinfeld (the show) will be viewed as THE most accurate historical portrayal of the 20th century. For all of its humor and ridiculousness, the show was funny because it was based on truth. Seinfeld is timeless because the show isn't about an era particularly, it's about humans. Shakespeare isn't so much about the wild plots, as it is about the interactions and dialogue between characters. Seinfeld is the new Shakespeare. Trust me on that. None of us will be around to see how right I am, so no point arguing. Then again, maybe I'm wrong. My opinions aren't exactly science fact.

I’m having a hard time finding a video that explains Jerry Seinfeld‘s method for writing jokes long-term. The rumor is that he had a calendar and would mark off every day that he wrote a joke whether it was good or bad (and he would go as long as he could without breaking the chain). Are there any videos of Jerry mentioning that method?

My parents brought me to the Funny Bone in St. Louis for my 21st Birthday in 1981...there were several comedians that night, and I was thrilled I could drink legally without going to east STL Illinois....different state, different rules regarding the age to drink. Alas, a young Jerry S. was on the bill that night...he killed!...he was about my age or just a bit older...I was really impressed, even back then, and even more now. I think it's safe to say, he's one of the 20 or 30 best comedians of all time...and I'm including guys like Groucho Marx and Mark Twain on that list....Dude KILLS! Seinfield, thanks for the birthday party and the time spent with my Mom and Dad!

That was a fascinating clip. Clearly that material is not ready (although better delivery might make me change my mind) but the glimpses into his reasoning are fascinating. At first glance a lot of that reasoning seems completely absurd, but clearly it works. Jerry was an incredibly successful club comic who ruled the clubs in his day and seems to understand how to make people around the world laugh. The fact that he sees individual words as funny and analyzes each syllable... I should have known he writes everything out, he seems like the type. That ending was great too: "Appropriate amounts of time on deserving subject" vs: "Inappropriate on undeserving.". Love that reasoning.

It's cool that he did this, most people don't appreciate how difficult it is to structure and write jokes in a way that they sound funny but also completely natural, as though the story is just coming now to the comedian's head.

TBH, this is one of the rare cases where the bit of bait and switch was warranted. He's not writing a joke here, he's writing a bit. Writing a bit is much more involved than just writing a joke. He's got a set of smaller jokes that are being woven into a larger one. Writing simple jokes isn't really that hard and people often times make them off the cuff. I personally struggle with figurative language at various points in my day and I can do that. I just have to be careful because I can be more cutting than I intend to be due to a lack of appropriate body language.

The internet is filled with keyboard warriors, but I must admit that Seinfeld is still the most hilarious of all the popular sitcoms I've ever watched. Albeit, George Costanza made the show all the more funny, rather than Jerry (the character). But it was the most amazing TV writing in comedy I've seen to date.

pkay dennis well yes, I appreciate the show but not quite as taken as I was when I stumbled upon Seinfeld (and I stumbled upon it well after 1997, given I reside in India). I guess it is a matter of taste. The series that I've found hilarious, after Seinfeld, has been the British comedy Coupling. I wish they had gone longer.

There really is only one thing needed to be a good comedian. The ability to tell the truth and be authentic to ones self. We have lived in the lie so long and believe in our own greatness--that, anyone who comes along and reminds us of the truth, and our own patheticness can always make people laugh. It has to come from a genuine place though--Being a carbon copy or an non genuine human being does not work.

I find this brilliant. The irony in the fact that he tells you in the beginning I'm going to waste your time. Then proceeds to not tell how he creates jokes. This in its self is how he makes jokes. He tells you what he is going to do to happened then you see it. So if it's funny to him you will laugh because he already seen you doing it. It was written
