Thank you Dan, I was clapping when you shared when you realised 99% of ppl will amount to nothing and you're just gna live your life, lifted a lot of pressure from you. That liberation. I fully resonate with that. I also wondered for too long what obligations/expectations in life have I assumed are necessary for happiness are actually not. Such as finding that one true purpose or progressing in a skill because otherwise I will feel ashamed for never reaching my 'potential' in life. Is getting/achieving better always better? Etc

I feel sometimes having the expectation like Jon Paul has that purpose/ life calling is this grandiose thing/ vision may 1) Rob you of contentment/ happiness. You may be in a very good situation now like - enjoy your job, have roof over your head, have money to spend on your likes and hobbies, etc.- it may seem mundane but actually it is already such a blessed/ good life compared to what other hardships other people face 2) Purpose can change as your life evolves. My why/ purpose in life now as a working mom in my40s is very very different from my why/ purpose as a single 20+ who just started working. It may look different but it does not mean I am not living up to my fullest potential at that moment in my life, my purpose are different. Much of what JP says is as if the purpose is a singular moment that you know, but I think it can also be about the journey rather than the destination. Life happens in the small moments and little details, not only in those “highlights” of one’s life.

I spent a huge chunk of teenage/young adult life chasing “acceptance”. But at 30, it was like the curtain fall from my eyes and i realised that i was forcing myself to be more for everyone. So i stopped this chase and been happy everyday now.😊

It’s another great episode. I really loved and enjoyed the discussion so much! I realised I’m one of those who thinks that I’ve found my “life purpose”, because I can relate to what Nigel describes “waking up feeling satisfied”. I’m not quite there yet, still working towards it, but I guess to me it’s more of having your direction align with your feeling. You reach a state of fulfillment when your want aligns with your heart (there’s no, I want this but…) I guess the biggest trap for people who are lost in finding life purpose is because they believe having a purpose means reaching an ultimate goal state in life. However, in reality, there is no forever state in life. There will always be changes in life, and priorities or purposes change as we go. At younger age, our purpose can be to find a job/ find love/etc, at old stage we want to be able to contribute to society, to teach/ to provide. It keeps evolving. It’s like finishing an unfinished business from the past, and rediscovering yourself. What’s most important is to be align your head and heart. Naturally you’ll feel content/ satisfied/ fulfilled/ right/ purposeful.

Commenting here because i understand what Jon is going through. I had the same questions on whether this life in sg is all that there is to life. It’s comfortable sure, but it made me feel stifled and there’s a part of me that wanted to experience more. Not sure if it’ll be the same for you but moving to work in a different country was one of the best decisions that ive ever made. It’s not just the sheer increase in freedom, but even the friends that you meet there will be different - people are more free spirited and that’s why theyve chosen to move to a different country. In terms of finances, i def save less and my peers do question why ive made such an impractical choice. The comfy sg life works for some but it doesnt make my heart sing like life here does. Ask your contacts to recommend you for freelance jobs and who knows, maybe one of them will lead you overseas.

I can relate with Jonathan so much, it cripples me that I haven’t find the true thing that I’m being born to be doing. I didn’t thought of it as a sickness or anything like it that I have to seek for therapy, I am not sure if it’s a bad thing or a good thing, but I just didn’t want to be a mediocre. I have tried to speak with many people and like this podcast episode, it always turns around and go back to the original question. Right now, my believe is that if my heart says to do something, I would follow it, I am not sure where I will end up, but this somehow is my personality and I hope people around me can accept this side of me. I always get dissatisfied when things get easy. I feel like only true greatness can cure me. 🙂

I think this is the exact double edged sword of this era and just simply as of now. Everyone question themselves "is this it?" We see too many videos online of that person or couple who quitted their job, backpacked and now earn money by posting on IG. Or that mother that can go gym, start home business, have 6 kids and look hot with sponsored clothes. It is good for us to seek fulfilment but we need to understand fulfilment is finding joy in where right now you are in, and not looking into a blank space and wonder where is joy.

Someone once said LUCK is actually Labour Under Correct Knowledge….very true ….for the most of us, we need to understand it’s not about luck always, but rather being prepared and planning ahead, whilst doing what is necessary now for us to reach our longer term goals….

If you have to purposely (pun intended) chase after a phantom “purpose” in order to live a wholesome life… and agonise about not finding it… maybe it’s time to put down that deliberation and start enjoying the journey instead. Who knows, as you remove blinders from your vision, you might start to finally realise the little hints and signs that life has tried to shown you all these while

I think having hardwork itself is very important but at the same time, without you showing your skills, its very hard to be found or known. So i believe its about how you sell yourself at the end of the day. How well you sell yourself. But its easier now thru social media. Dont give up, just keep hustling till you are known. Its not a one year two year thing. There are people who succeed after many many many years. You know the Singer Joker Xue, his story is one that really show that persistence is one key to success.

Jon you can watch the Disney monie Soul. That movie make me and my friends relook at our life about having a "meaningful life". Either you Strive for purposeful + successfulness at a field/ chase your passion / enjoy a peaceful mundane life without worries, etc. You can go back and forth between all of them because grass is always greener too... 😂😂😂 I guess u need to try a bit at everything to know what make u the most happy.

Happiness is separating materialism from the intangibles and seeking contentment in what is available and accessible to you, such like love, family and friendship. Happiness is short-lived, fleeting and meant to be that random occasional spark in our lives. We cant feel happy all the time. Instead we should remind ourselves to be contented.

This topic sound like a first world problem which might be created as we are chasing better achievement aspect (monetary or lifestyle). Happiness is different for everyone, we are motivated by different things. I believe to learn this aspect, we have to be open to more life experiences to truly find our right direction (true happiness).

Very complicated topic. Being happy is living life without much expectation from others and yourself, doing whatever you wants and likes without the thought of financial burden. So it's down to 1. Expectation - be it others or your own 2. Freedom to do stuffs that you want/like 3. Financial freedom. My sister is staying alone and earning enough money to fund for yearly travel around the world and she is happy. The family don't give her pressure or any expectation so she is free to do whatever she likes. I am not working at the moment but earning passively from investment which is enough to fund my slacking life enjoying watching KZbin,K-drama and stuffs. I am happy 😊 So basically if you want to be happy, lower your expectations. Usually high expectation will come with high burden of pressure or finance and ended up stressing yourself. I saw a Singaporean couple who threw away their corporate life and now staying in Bali with low expenses and enjoying life and they are happy. They have passive income.

Someone once told me "boring means comfortable". Sounds simple but it opened up an entirely new door of philosophical pondering for me. Boring means that you're comfortable, but is feeling comfortable really a bad thing? If you're bored but you have your entire life in check, why risk losing the comfort? At the end of the day, not all of us are gonna do great things and leave our names in some history books but we all have the chance to leave a big impact on other people's life, the life of the ones around us. So to me, boring just means you have a bit more space and capacity in your life to do something meaningful for someone, to love deeper, to leave a deeper impact on someone's life.

Everyone has a purpose in life be u rich or poor, a top notch professional or a religious person. Also there is spiritual and non spiritual purpose. For example founder PM LKY realized the problems of being colonized and that drove him to turn the tables and make the best for Sg. That was the purpose. Sometimes u suffer ailments and certain setbacks and u learn the pitfalls and u share that with friends or others etc who are going thru similar situations it gives the encouragement and ability to resolve etc, that fulfills ur purpose in life unknowingly. Purpose in life is not necessarily achieving goals u set or fulfilling a vision u have. As for full time religious practitioner, they feel it’s God’s calling for them to carry out certain aspects of their religions. For an atheist there is always a deep emptiness even if there is physical / material achievements, & they need to do more to try and fill the spiritual emptiness which could not be done doing earthly things.

Or are you so insecure that a guy with that much drive intimidates you? Not attacking you, just genuinely curious if you’ve thought about that. Felt like he’s just looking for a “thing” that he’s best in the world, earns him loads, and is adding value to the society. And he just couldn’t accept that life is that simple and wanting to add more meaning and value to his.
