I always appreciate when you talk to Reuben, his words are some of my biggest inspiration as a starting street photographer
@SourPlanet Жыл бұрын
"Originality to me is just to me an artist finding a real clarity in externalizing what they have in them already." Getting these sort of philosophies distilled down to single lines sounds poetic, but it's loaded. It's unfiltered wisdom built from a lot of reflection. He drops them constantly, too.

These street photograghers are like metaphoric alchemists, attempting to distill gold from the street, seeking the decisive moment from the chaos. Loved the interview.

I am a young 62 and just getting started with “street” photography. I put “street” in quotes because I don’t necessarily like categorizing photography into a category. I am just, a photographer, better yet, just an artist. It’s hard not to put a label on your work and I don’t do that. Nothing wrong with others categorizing their work like that, it’s just something I don’t do. Anyway, I find myself in the middle of a suburban jungle with what seems to have little to photograph. I use to just say “this place has no character” but that’s because I didn’t look at it through a child’s mind. I am now starting to explore my local community and will see what I can come up with. The reason for all those words coming at you first Paulie, is ever time I listen to one of your videos I learn that it looks like you are always looking at NYC in different ways and produce some unique images. I relate to you and especially Reuben Radding. His genuine self, is so refreshing and makes me want to do better. His work shows that to me, genuine, not new, but genuine. Thanks for these Office Hours, they are inspiring even to a grumpy old artist like me.

So glad the algorithm gave me this follow up to the 'walkie talkie'. Reuban is definitely the type of photographer I'd like to talk to, mainly because of how he politely deflects the sort of questions that are irrelevant to learning the craft and becoming a 'real' photographer and not just a wannabe influencer who just happens to hold a Leica with a red button.

Nailed it! Need to learn the art before you get rewarded for your efforts. Even then remaining original and fresh becomes a struggle as a creative when your sponsors & followers just demand more of the same.

Just discovered your channel .... this is good stuff. The "imposter syndrome" discussion was very interesting ... we all have an "artistic eye" that is formed from the different influences in our lives (other photographers, art, music, movies). If anyone feels "imposter syndrome", just remember it took a certain amount of skill to achieve that level/quality, so embrace it, especially if you continue to challenge yourself.

Hey Paulie I’m new to film and am absolutely loving it I’m from Long Island and was. Curious is you know of any work shops or meet ups where I can learn a thing or 2 by experienced it’s easy to go out and shot but maybe like a workshop or a walk with a few photographers to share and exchange information would be great and a lot of fun 👏 keep on the interesting content love it !

Imposter syndrome. I see absolutely nothing wrong with it. You gotta try everything to find the right thing. Even if you start replicating the same work as someone else, somewhere down the line you'll start developing and including your own style into it.

As an amateur photographer, someone who would like to do something for work but ends up taking pictures as a hobby, I really respect you guys who are fully immersed and passionate about your craft. On the topic of the title, I have to say that "american street photography" kinda looks all the same, it's difficult to tell who took any picture. Even if a photographer can make you feel the moment, or manage to give some authorial feel to a shot, they all follow some cliche and common imagery. Like old man with hat crossing the street, spontaneous kids, old woman with strong wrinkles, someone jumping...ecc.. They look good on film, but it's rare to see a photo that stands out. Especially if you see some Instagram profiles, you can flip trough the screen and you think "yeah it's great to go out everyday and shooting, but they all looks the same". It's a beautiful research but I wouldn't stress over originality and uniqueness for this reasons.
@PaulieB Жыл бұрын
recently someone put photos of dozens of photographers on a wall and I very easily identified photos from photographers I was familiar with. I agree that a lot of it looks the same, but there is a way to have your own style come through. The issue is most people dont get to that point.
