How To: Beat A Slicer
Players who slice can be tough to beat because the ball stays low and it’s hard to attack. They are also capable of adding backspin to the ball making it tough to read.
If you’re struggling against a slicer - this video is for you!
Follow the 4 steps to find ways to win this matchup:
1) Confidence in being able to beat them
2) Using your legs in your shots more
3) Playing high deep balls to their weaker side
4) Following it in and hitting a smart aggressive approach/volley

Good tips, going to play a slice-everything player this weekend. Wouldn't mentioning topspin be something that should have been in here as well? I believe topspin is needed to counter/get the low skidding slices up above the net. When I play flat hitters and send a mean slice, I often see them hit the ball into the net. I usually counter it with topspin, because even though I can slice fairly ok I don't want to be in a slice war with someone who builds their game around slicing. Don't think I will win that war in the long run. Will try to be a bit more aggressive and move to the net, sadly I tend to be a bit lazy and rather enjoy hanging around the baseline😅

Thank you! Yes that would work too! Anything that’s making them hit the ball from up high makes it more likely for them to slide down and drop the ball shorter in the court. Good luck in your match - would love to hear how it goes

@@LetsLearnTennis Clubladdermatch (we play games, not sets, so the score could be 13-4 or 9-8 depending on how many games you manage within your booked courttime) ended in a draw at 5-5! I won one long rally in my first servicegame, and after that the opponent seemed more interested in keeping the points short. Gave me 0 rhytm. So he did a mix of dropshots and slices. Most points were iniated by him with a low slice landing near the service line, and depending on how fast I got to it if I could hit a winner or unforced error of that ball. Had him at 0-40 in 3 service games and could only manage one break, so that's something I need to improve on. I do feel that it hindered me quite a lot when he gave me 0 rhytm only playing short points, to the point that I did not feel confident even when the score would be 0-40 and he was serving.

@@LetsLearnTennis I think the constant questions being asked by my opponents slices just shattered my confidence. I could get two similar slices towards me and one I would do well on but then the next one I dumped into the net. I never play vs this kind of player so it's hard to train to get better versus it as well. Better to have experienced it if I run into it at a local tournament I guess!

You will not beat the slicer, forget it! You are going to overhit too many approach shots, you don't play the net enough to volley reliably, he is going to chip and charge on every 2nd serve, you never play against this style and his execution is way simpler than yours under pressure😅

Got to hope!! More people should learn the slice effectively - it’s challenging to play against! Top players will be able to beat it, as you see it’s used a little on the pro circuit but not a lot
